Renaissance and Reformation--partners or enemies? The popular image of these two historical phenomena is one of opposition and contradiction: the Renaissance was a cultural revival influenced by classical philosophy; the Reformation was a radical religious movement which rejected traditional authority. But in the life and work of Peter Martyr Vermigli, a "Calvinist Thomist" and the leading sixteenth-century Italian Reformer, scholasticism and Protestantism converge. An international conference, sponsored by the Faculty of Religious Studies, McGill University, reflects the recent renewed interest in Italian reform. Entitled "The Cultural Impact of Italian Reformers," its aim was to gather Vermigli scholars along with Renaissance and Reformation scholars. Half the essays (by Paul Grendler, Cesare Vasoli, Rita Belladonna, Anthony Santosuosso, and Antonio D'Andrea) deal with the general question of Renaissance and Reformation interaction: How are humanism and scholasticism related? Marvin Anderson, Philip McNair, J. Patrick Donnelly, Robert Kingdon, and Joseph C. McLelland focus on the thought and activity of Vermigli himself. Students of theology, history, and philosophy, and specifically of the Renaissance and the Reformation, will welcome this book.

Peter Moro is the forgotten co-designer of the Royal Festival Hall. A German émigré who had worked with Berthold Lubetkin’s famed practice, Tecton, in the 1930s, Moro was drafted in to help realise the Festival Hall in just two short years, in time for the Festival of Britain in 1951. With a team of his former students, he created many of the interiors we see today. For Moro, the Festival Hall was a stepping-stone to a career designing many of Britain’s finest post-war theatres, particularly Nottingham Playhouse, Plymouth Theatre Royal, and the renovated Bristol Old Vic. He and his colleagues also designed some exceptional one-off houses, as well as exhibitions, university buildings, schools, and council housing, collaborating with leading talents such as the designer Robin Day. Based on detailed archival research and with stunning new photography, this is the first book devoted to the work of Peter Moro and his colleagues in architectural practice. Ranging from the 1930s to the 1980s, it explores Moro’s belief in a rigorous modern architecture which was both functionally sound and aesthetically rich. It sheds new light on this important body of work, and enriches our understanding of the experience and diversity of modernism in Britain.

An exclusive look inside world-renowned architect Peter Marino’s private, residential projects In this stunning new collection, internationally acclaimed architect Peter Marino shares a look inside his private, residential projects. In contrast to the architecture and design for his luxury commercial clients – including Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Tiffany & Co. – the residences featured are ones where Marino was allowed almost unlimited creative freedom in both the architectural planning and interior design. Through ten chapters (nine completed residences and a tenth chapter of in-progress houses) with more than 200 images, this book provides a behind-the-scenes look into Marino’s remarkable range of work across the globe with residences in: Southampton and Sagaponack, New York; Aspen, Colorado; Miami, Florida; Summerlin, Nevada; Malibu, California; Faqra, Lebanon; the Dominican Republic; Ramatuelle and St. Barts, France; Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos; and Skorpios, Greece. This is the first book on Peter Marino’s residential architecture, and readers can gain insight into his practice and approach to residential design through a preface by Marino himself, an introduction by Pilar Viladas, and profiles of each residence by Sam Lubell.
Peter McGough: Alphabet
Limbs twist and fold around each other in this delightfully queer cyanotype alphabet made up of nude male bodiesFor this playful and intimate artist's book, American artist Peter McGough shaped nude male models into sculptural renderings of each letter of the English alphabet, creating 26 lush, deeply queer cyanotype images of their poses. The cyanotype, a slow and cameraless photographic process--and one of the oldest ways of making photos--engages light only in the spectrum of ultraviolet and blue, creating spectral, painterly images that reflect what cannot be perceived by the naked eye. The result is an inky photo transfer, which appears much like a black-and-white image, but on a bluescale. The 26 images in McGough's Alphabet draw on Hellenistic sculpture, queer histories and the material quality of the cyanotype to create a graphic language all McGough's own.Peter McGough (born 1958) has collaborated with David McDermott since 1980 as part of the artist duo McDermott & McGough, which is known for their anachronistic "time experiments." He is also the author of the 2019 memoir I've Seen the Future and I'm Not Going: The Art Scene and Downtown New York in the 1980s.

David Gay writes: 'Covenant theology, devised in Germany in the second half of the 16th century, confuses the vital biblical doctrine of the two covenants - the old and the new. This is not a matter of words. The consequences are severe. And it is always good to come across someone who appreciates this, and publishes work to try put it right. Peter Masters edges in this direction. But, alas, I am convinced that his work on the covenants is only "good in parts". So I have responded to it in the hope that I might help others get clearer light on the covenants; in particular, that they might come to see more of the glory of the new covenant for the believer; above all, that they might enjoy that liberty in Christ for themselves, and enjoy it to the full'. Since his first projects in the 1980s, drawings have always accompanied the architectural work of Peter Markli. They are patiently recorded images and thoughts that occasionally have an associative relationship with the designs. Often however they are independent, free notes based on inner images. This volume compiles a large number of such drawings. Eight texts by various authors from different cultural fields and an overview of all drawings produced since the beginning complement this remarkable collection. Since the 1980s, Peter Markli has been one of the most important architects in Switzerland, where he enjoys a very special status.

Peter Markli has been one of the most striking protagonists of German-Swiss architecture since the founding of the movement in the early 1980s. However, his impressive buildings resist classification; they do not fit any particular scheme or style, as each structure is developed on an intensely intimate level. This results in wholly unique edifices, which provoke questions about humanity's use of architecture as a means of expressing timelessness, rigidity, and permanence. This volume presents 17 buildings erected by Markli over the past 15 years. Each is analysed thoroughly with texts, plans and images. The presented works are complemented by enlightening essays by Florian Beigel, Philip Christou, Franz Wanner and Ellis Woodman. An exciting interview with Peter Markli himself rounds off this impressive monographic collection, conducted by Elena Kossovskaja.
