Nanotechnology and Scientific Communication

Nanotechnology and Scientific Communication

Deborah R. Bassett

Palgrave Macmillan
2017
sidottu
This study examines findings from a 4-year-long ethnography of communication among a research university’s community of scientists and engineers working in nanoscience and nanotechnology. It includes analysis of 20 in-depth interviews with scientists and engineers from 18 different disciplines self-identified as working in nanoscale science and engineering. Using multiple methods of inquiry, including fieldwork, interviews, and textual analysis, elements of a shared speech code are presented, each of which indicate culturally distinctive understandings of psychology, sociology and rhetoric. In particular, the interview data addresses questions such as “What kind of person is a scientist?” “What is the role of science in society?” and “What is the role of communication in science?” This book will appeal to readers interested in science and society, scientific communication, and ethnography of communication.
Regulating Abortion

Regulating Abortion

Deborah R. McFarlane; Wendy L. Hansen

Johns Hopkins University Press

Explores the historical development and severe ramifications of America's strict abortion regulations.Nearly one in four women in the United States undergoes an abortion during their life. In Regulating Abortion, Deborah R. McFarlane and Wendy L. Hansen uncover the history of the complex web of regulations surrounding abortion in the United States and shed light on the stark reality of this heavily regulated and politically divisive health care service. McFarlane and Hansen delve into the historical development of abortion regulations since Roe v. Wade. They explore the underlying reasons for the extensive regulation of what they assert is a routine and safe medical procedure. The authors examine the multitude of factors that influence state-level abortion policies, including party affiliation, religion, the representation of women in legislatures, and political contributions. By demonstrating how these factors shape the landscape of abortion regulation across different states, they reveal the varying methods and justifications used to either restrict or protect abortion access, with a particular focus on the disproportionate impacts on women of color. The recent landmark US Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization overturned long-standing precedents. McFarlane and Hansen provide timely insights into the implications of this ruling and how it further amplifies the disparities among states in regulating abortion. An essential resource for understanding the influences driving this divide, Regulating Abortion offers a comprehensive analysis of US abortion policy contextualized by relevant Supreme Court decisions and a comparative exploration of abortion regulation in Western Europe.

The English Reformation in the Spanish Imagination

The English Reformation in the Spanish Imagination

Deborah R. Forteza

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO PRESS
2022
sidottu
The English Reformation in the Spanish Imagination examines early modern Spanish literary works that represent English Catholics and figures from the English Reformation, including Henry and Elizabeth Tudor, Anne Boleyn, Catherine of Aragon, Sir Francis Drake, and Mary Stuart. Deborah R. Forteza compares these texts to assess how rhetorical and genre distinctions open and constrain the Spanish representations and how these exchanges inform Anglo-Spanish perceptions and relations. The book focuses on the literary representation of characters as classical and biblical monsters and saints and considers how these images were transformed and deployed in lesser-known poems, plays, and novels in order to capture the Spanish imagination. Through these sources, Forteza reveals the complex fraternal and antagonistic links between England and Spain, including Black Legend and Counter-Reformation exchanges. In examining the works that shaped Spain’s view of England at the time, The English Reformation in the Spanish Imagination demonstrates the importance of transnational study and why it is essential for a more nuanced understanding of Spanish literature.

Whether perusing a recipe or learning what a literary character eats, readers approach a text differently when reading about food. Read My Plate: The Literature of Food explores what narrators and characters (in fiction, in performance, and in the popular genre of the “food memoir”) cook and eat. Beat poet Allen Ginsberg, the inmates of the Terezin concentration camp, performance artist Karen Finley, novelist Jhumpa Lahiri, playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, and the celebrated chef-turned-travel-journalist Anthony Bourdain are just a few examples of the writers whose works are discussed. Close readings of the literal and figurative “plates” in these texts allow a unique form of intimate access to the speakers’ feelings and memories and helps readers to understand more about how the dynamics of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and social class affect what the narrators/characters eat, from tourtière to collard greens to a school lunch bento box.
