Born Ida Casey, the author was the grand-daughter of a US congressman and the wife of Indian agent D B Dyer. She followed her husband to the Darlington Indian Agency, based near Fort Reno, where she experienced the ups and downs of frontier life and encountered the nearby Native Americans, with whom she made enduring friendships. The book presents the best available picture of agency life in the Indian Territory and is an excellent source on early Oklahoma.

In this first full biography of former United States attorney general Janet Reno (1938-2016), Judith Hicks Stiehm describes the independent and unconventional life of a woman who grew up in a rural South Florida homestead and rose to occupy one of the top positions in the United States government, whose ethics and example served as inspiration for women in law and politics across the nation. In telling Janet Reno’s story, Stiehm incorporates personal details from her full and exclusive access to family papers and photos, as well as inside information from Reno’s own materials and interviews with over 40 of Reno’s personal and professional acquaintances. Stiehm begins by tracing Reno’s free-range childhood, her college years at Cornell and experience at Harvard Law School as one of 16 women in a class of over 500, the challenges she faced as a woman lawyer launching her career in 1960s Miami, and her 15 years as Miami-Dade state attorney. In 1993, Reno was appointed to serve in Washington as United States attorney general in the Clinton administration, the first woman to occupy the position in the history of the nation. Stiehm tells how Reno engaged with the East Coast elite as an outsider, seen by many as outspoken and eccentric—yet scrupulous, uncompromising, and immune to influence. Stiehm explores the reasons behind Reno’s decisions in cases she handled during her tenure, including the siege of the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas; Kenneth Starr’s Whitewater investigation; the Oklahoma City bombing; and the Elián González controversy.Janet Reno’s life was an illustration to many that it is possible to hold high office while consistently speaking and acting on principle. This biography examines the guiding forces that shaped Reno’s character, the trails blazed by Reno in her professional roles, and the lasting influence of Reno on American politics and society to this day.

At sixteen, Lizzy Bray already has enough on her plate; trying to cope with her exams and her, decidedly neurotic, mother, when her father announces that he's been sacked from his job at the local veterinary clinic. With no money coming in and their bank accounts quickly draining, the family is forced to sell up their quaint little cottage on the outskirts of the small, seaside town of Bude and move to the nearby Bodmin moor. Although aware her family has owned a farm on the moors for several generations, Lizzy is shocked, to discover that it is, in fact, a house she knows very well; a house that has featured in many of her friends late night horror stories over the years, the infamous Insane Reno. Insane Reno, the local murder house; where all who have resided have met an untimely end, with only two people escaping with their lives; a young girl and a man with Down's syndrome, believed to be the killer. But, when Lizzy's mother flees from the house, Lizzy's suspicions about her new home begin to grow and she soon discovers far more than she ever bargained for.

The flashing neon lights of Reno harbor a ghastly past. With its wide-open gambling, divorce laws and around-the-clock casinos and bars, the Biggest Little City in the World was a rough and wild town with a turbulent history. Victims of Priscilla Ford's Thanksgiving Day massacre haunt a downtown street. After a disappearance and death shrouded in mystery, the spirit of Roy Frisch still lingers near the location of George Wingfield's home. Lynched by a mob for a death that never happened, the angry ghost of Luis Ortiz still walks the bridge at night. The queen of haunted Nevada, Janice Oberding, unearths the goulish history that put the "sin" in Nevada's original Sin City.

Following the Indian uprising known as the Red River War, Fort Reno (in what would become western Oklahoma) was established in 1875 by the United States government. Its original assignment was to serve as an outpost to exercise control over the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians. But Fort Reno also served as an embryonic frontier settlement around which the first trappings of Anglo-American society developed a regulatory force between the Indian tribes and the white man, and the primary arm of government responsible for restraining land-hungry whites from invading country promised to Native American tribes by treaty. With the formation of the new Territory of Oklahoma and introduction of civil law, Fort Reno was forced to assume another purpose: it became a cavalry remount center. But when the mechanization of the military brought an end to the horse cavalry, the demise of Fort Reno was imminent. When Ben Clark, the prideful scout who knew and loved Fort Reno, ended his own life in 1914, the military post that had once thrived on America's frontier was brought to a poignant end. The story of Fort Reno, as detailed here by Stan Hoig, touches on several of the most important topics of nineteenth-century Western history: the great cattle drives, Indian pacification and the Plains Wars, railroads, white settlement, and the Oklahoma land rushes. Hoig deals not only with Fort Reno, but also with Darlington agency, the Chisolm Trail, and the trading activities in Indian Territory from 1874 to approximately 1900. The author includes maps, photographs, and illustrations to enhance the narrative and guide the reader, like a scout, through a time of treacherous but fascinating events in the Old West.

Remembering Reno
Reno, Nevada, has had an unconventional past. Nevada has sometimes been behind the times and sometimes ahead of them in defying conventional morality. The politicians who prevailed were consistently those who spurned hypocrisy and kept the economy strong by allowing activities that were illegal elsewhere: prizefighting, gambling, uncontested divorce. Reno, the largest city in the state until the late 1950s, took advantage of the lax political environment to become an urban playground. But Reno was also the home of ordinary people—merchants, railroad workers, university students and professors, families. The city’s two cultures rarely intersected. With a selection of fine historic images from her best-selling book, Historic Photos of Reno, Donnelyn Curtis provides a valuable and revealing historical retrospective on the growth and development of Reno. Remembering Reno captures the flavor of both sides of the city’s personality. Included are images of the businesses, the buildings, and the main events that marked the rise of the “Biggest Little City in the World.” Some of the photographs also capture the beauty of the natural environment in which Reno is situated. In stunning black-and-white photography, this handsome book offers a compelling look into Reno’s past that will appeal to newcomers and longtime residents alike.
