Shakespeare in the Theatre

Shakespeare in the Theatre

Richard David

Cambridge University Press
1981
pokkari
Complemented by photographs of individual productions, Mr David's book comprises studies of major English productions of Shakespeare during the 1970s, often detailing how radically some performances have altered in the course of a run. His first concern has been to record, as accurately and comprehensively as possible, those moments in actual performance that have seemed most strikingly to recreate or impair the dramatic effects intended by Shakespeare. Mr David also draws wider conclusions about Shakespeare's art and the art of the theatre in general. He attempts to answer such questions as: what are the main trends and priorities in contemporary Shakespearean production? What conditions are imposed on plays by the nature of theatre and the art of acting? How is performance moulded by dramatic form? What special problems affect the 'translation', for modern spectators, of a classical play written in accordance with forgotten conventions? This book fuses academic and practical approaches to drama.

Originally published in 1935, this book contains an expanded version of the Harness Prize Essay for 1934 on the subject of Shakespeare's verse. David attempts to explain the effects of Shakespeare's choice to be a poet and a dramatist simultaneously and how he met the advantages and disadvantages of that decision, 'how he used poetry to aid his dramatization and dramatic effect to aid his poetry'. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in Shakespeare's writings and in dramatic verse more generally.

Presents a new history of how Hindustani court music responded to the political transitions of the nineteenth century. How far did colonialism transform north Indian music? In the period between the Mughal empire and the British Raj, how did the political landscape bleed into aesthetics, music, dance, and poetry? Examining musical culture through a diverse and multilingual archive, primarily using sources in Urdu, Bengali, and Hindi that have not been translated or critically examined before, The Scattered Court challenges our assumptions about the period. Richard David Williams presents a long history of interactions between northern India and Bengal, with a core focus on the two courts of Wajid Ali Shah (1822–1887), the last ruler of the kingdom of Awadh. He charts the movement of musicians and dancers between the two courts in Lucknow and Matiyaburj, as well as the transregional circulation of intellectual traditions and musical genres, and demonstrates the importance of the exile period for the rise of Calcutta as a celebrated center of Hindustani classical music. Since Lucknow is associated with late Mughal or Nawabi society and Calcutta with colonial modernity, examining the relationship between the two cities sheds light on forms of continuity and transition over the nineteenth century, as artists and their patrons navigated political ruptures and social transformations. The Scattered Court challenges the existing historiography of Hindustani music and Indian culture under colonialism by arguing that our focus on Anglophone sources and modernizing impulses has directed us away from the aesthetic subtleties, historical continuities, and emotional dimensions of nineteenth-century music.

New research has exposed our leadership paradigm as a outdated mess of flawed models and practices. By working with great leaders and observing their common attitudes and behaviours, Richard Hames has cracked a universal code based on intelligence, appreciation and collaboration. This code unlocks Five Literacies of Global Leadership. These behaviours are the trade secrets of the artists and alchemists among us. Often instinctively, these leaders charge others with energy, search for new perspectives and embrace diversity. And they are driven by dialogue. This book reveals approaches and attitudes that they all share - and that can make anyone an exceptional leader.
Oh, Nelly!: The Life and Loves of Penelope Evangeline Dougherty 1883-1963
Meet Penelope Evangeline Dougherty, otherwise known as "Nelly" "I've known genuine love's fierce passion and the love one feels for a soul mate. I've known parenthood's unmatched joy and agony. I've known abject poverty and financial contentment. I've known terrifying adventure, death's near misses, and the double-edged sword of revenge." Inspired by a mysteriously discovered, time-worn autobiography started by Nelly, her story is vividly brought to life once more for us, knitted with great love and a healthy dose of imagination into a compelling narrative by her grandson.

Richard David Kennedy's satirical latter-day epic probes the nature of religion, and, at the same time, questions humanity's ability to look at it objectively. A highly original and imaginative poem of vast proportion, this work will easily stand the test of time.

What do you get when you take a failed novelist, a capricious "alien," a world renowned- but debauched evangelist, an alcoholic estate manager and mix them together with a half dozen other eccentric characters? What you get is distinctly different cocktail called THE PROFIT that you won't be able to order at a bar anywhere. The plot is a riddle in an enigma that is so well-woven and imaginative it's almost too simple to understand. The content is mature, intended for adults who are discerning readers who enjoy fine, avant-garde literature and bristling social satire, particularly about evangelists and their followers, and should be appreciated by atheists, agnostics and the devoutly religious alike who have open minds. The reader is sure to be as "captivated" as it the Writerman in the book in this most exquisite of his offerings.

The Encuentro isn't just another novel. A fairy tale in novel form- told as a farce, presented like a play, and executed like a movie, it is indeed "novel" in every way. It is very much as advertised: "A Risque Fairy Tale For Contemporary Adults"- very mature adults. It is also Kennedy as his innovated best- "pulling out all the stops," and turning the medium on its head to make a gut-busting spoof that turns out not to be such a "spoof" after all. So, while the subject matter is bawdy, the humor outrageous and the wit nonpareil, it is, to be sure, a deeply profound exposition of the nature and meaning of life at the end of the day. It is, as he has stated, "probably (my) best symphony yet," and destined to be an instant classic. Where else will you find a novel's author portraying himself in his own book as a "movie director?" The end is simply jarring, stunning, completely unexpected. The Encuentro is a must read.
