It's Great to Suck at Something: The Unexpected Joy of Wiping Out and What It Can Teach Us about Patience, Resilience, and the Stuff That Really Matte
Discover how the freedom of sucking at something can help you build resilience, embrace imperfection, and find joy in the pursuit rather than the goal with this "wholly original work that is destined to become a classic" (Susannah Cahalan, #1 New York Times bestselling author). When was the last time you tried something new? Something that won't make you more productive, make you more money, or check anything off your to-do list? Something you're really, really bad at, but that brought you joy? Odds are, not recently. We live in a time of aspirational psychoses. We humblebrag about how hard we work and we prioritize productivity over happiness. Even kids don't play for the sake of playing anymore: they're building blocks to build the ideal college application. We're told to be the best or nothing at all. We're trapped in an epic and farcical quest for perfection and it's all making us more anxious and depressed than ever. This book provides the antidote. (It's Great to) Suck at Something "shows how joy and growth come from risking failure and letting go of perfectionism" (The Wall Street Journal). Drawing on her personal experience sucking at surfing (a sport Karen Rinaldi's dedicated nearly two decades of her life to doing without ever coming close to getting good at it) along with philosophy, literature, and the latest science, Rinaldi explores sucking as a lost art we must reclaim for our health and our sanity and helps us find the way to our own riotous suck-ability. Sucking at something rewires our brain in positive ways, helps us cultivate grit, and inspires us to find joy in the process, without obsessing about the destination. Ultimately, it gives you freedom: the freedom to suck without caring is revelatory. Coupling honest, hilarious storytelling with unexpected insights, this "thought-provoking, engaging examination...explains how our lives are more satisfying and rich when we give ourselves the opportunity to experiment, struggle, and play" (Gretchen Rubin, bestselling author of The Happiness Project).
Language Difficulties in an Educational Context

Language Difficulties in an Educational Context

A language/communication difficulty is at the core of many types of special educational need: specific and general learning difficulties, autism, sensory impairments and specific developmental disorders. A language-based approach to teaching and therapy therefore provides a key to unlocking many children?s difficulties with learning and social behaviour in both mainstream and special schools. Underpinned by this ideology and based upon observations of practice and research this book covers issues surrounding language difficulties in educational contexts from pre-school to adolescence. It then presents a language-based approach to educating children with special needs, in mainstream and special schools. A final chapter addresses the use of IT in the education of children with language difficulties.

Whether you are a new or an experienced teacher, Communication and Creativity in the Math Classroom provides you with classroom-tested activities and ideas which are motivating, engaging, and meaningful to students. Traditional textbooks commonly feature conventional, un-engaging, and somewhat boring problems and activities. Communication and Creativity in the Math Classroom provides you with activities and ideas which stress life skills such as communicating more effectively, being creative, analyzing a variety of problems, following directions, and working cooperatively with others. These skills are very valuable but are rarely addressed in the traditional math curriculum. The materials and ideas in this book allow you to interject these skills into your daily lessons while covering various mathematical topics. Many of the easily reproducible activities can be used as assessments; consequently, suggested scoring rubrics are included as well as helpful strategies and observations.

The story Rinaldi relates is emblematic of the fate of countless others whose lives were shaped by the scourge of slavery. The protagonist's mother, a daughter of free blacks in Philadelphia, was kidnapped from her parents by slave catchers. After the kidnapping, she was enslaved on a Virginia tobacco plantation for 37 years before making her escape to Gettysburg on the night before the historic Civil War battle erupted. She was nine months pregnant - and determined that her child would not be born a slave.

People invest in traditional assets - stocks, bonds and cash. This is a textbook about other assets -"alternatives". Most (all?) alternative textbooks seem to only discuss funded alternatives. When discussing real estate, it is usually assumed one buys the building. Totally separate are textbooks in derivatives - buying with little money upfront (unfunded). We believe both funded and unfunded alternatives should be organized on what drives value, not whether you borrow to buy the asset. How to value both types of alternative assets are combined in this book. The authors believe in the spiral method of teaching. This book initially covers all alternative assets with minimal mathematics, suitable for undergraduates and inquisitive investors. A mathematics chapter follows and the material is presented again more rigorously. Appendices are presented illustrating the mathematical concepts. Exercises are also included to stimulate essay answers.

"This was several times with that damn cribbage board. I hate cribbage boards to this very day. They never beat us on the arms or legs or stuff, it was always on the bottom of the feet, I couldn't figure it out." Brian L., Huronia Regional Centre SurvivorOver the past two decades, the public has borne witness to ongoing revelations of shocking, intense, and even sadistic forms of violence in spaces meant to provide care. This has been particularly true in institutions designed to care for people with disabilities. In this work, the authors not only describe institutional violence, but work to make sense of how and why institutional violence within care settings is both so pervasive and so profound. Drawing on a wide range of primary data, including oral histories of institutional survivors and staff, ethnographic observation, legal proceedings and archival data, this book asks: What does institutional violence look like in practice and how might it be usefully categorized? How have extreme forms violence and neglect come to be the cultural norm across institutions? What organizational strategies in institutions foster the abdication of personal morality and therefore violence? How is institutional care the crucial "first step" in creating a culture that accepts violence as the norm? This highly interdisciplinary work develops scholarly analysis of the history and importance of institutional violence and, as such, is of particular interest to scholars whose work engages with issues of disability, health care law and policy, violence, incarceration, organizational behaviour, and critical theory.
Analysis of Evolutionary Processes

Analysis of Evolutionary Processes

Fabio Dercole; Sergio Rinaldi

Princeton University Press
2008
sidottu
Quantitative approaches to evolutionary biology traditionally consider evolutionary change in isolation from an important pressure in natural selection: the demography of coevolving populations. In Analysis of Evolutionary Processes, Fabio Dercole and Sergio Rinaldi have written the first comprehensive book on Adaptive Dynamics (AD), a quantitative modeling approach that explicitly links evolutionary changes to demographic ones. The book shows how the so-called AD canonical equation can answer questions of paramount interest in biology, engineering, and the social sciences, especially economics. After introducing the basics of evolutionary processes and classifying available modeling approaches, Dercole and Rinaldi give a detailed presentation of the derivation of the AD canonical equation, an ordinary differential equation that focuses on evolutionary processes driven by rare and small innovations. The authors then look at important features of evolutionary dynamics as viewed through the lens of AD. They present their discovery of the first chaotic evolutionary attractor, which calls into question the common view that coevolution produces exquisitely harmonious adaptations between species. And, opening up potential new lines of research by providing the first application of AD to economics, they show how AD can explain the emergence of technological variety. Analysis of Evolutionary Processes will interest anyone looking for a self-contained treatment of AD for self-study or teaching, including graduate students and researchers in mathematical and theoretical biology, applied mathematics, and theoretical economics.
