Innovation Economics

Innovation Economics

Why America no longer leads the world in innovation, why we should be concerned, and what must be done about it This important book delivers a critical wake-up call: a fierce global race for innovation advantage is under way, and while other nations are making support for technology and innovation a central tenet of their economic strategies and policies, America lacks a robust innovation policy. What does this portend? Robert Atkinson and Stephen Ezell, widely respected economic thinkers, report on profound new forces that are shaping the global economy—forces that favor nations with innovation-based economies and innovation policies. Unless the United States enacts public policies to reflect this reality, Americans face the relatively lower standards of living associated with a noncompetitive national economy. The authors explore how a weak innovation economy not only contributed to the Great Recession but is delaying America's recovery from it and how innovation in the United States compares with that in other developed and developing nations. Atkinson and Ezell then lay out a detailed, pragmatic road map for America to regain its global innovation advantage by 2020, as well as maximize the global supply of innovation and promote sustainable globalization.
Stereoselective Synthesis

Stereoselective Synthesis

Robert S. Atkinson

Stereoselective Synthesis considers the methods available for the synthesis of simple target molecules, the majority containing not more than two chiral centres, as single stereoisomers. This volume focuses on the factors which give rise to the stereoselectivity and classifies stereoselective reactions accordingly. This classification, and the extensive use of 3-D representations, enables the student to understand the stereochemistry of these reactions and hence apply them to the synthesis of previously unseen target molecules as single stereoisomers. Stereoselective Synthesis presents:*a new, unique, simplified classification for stereoselective reactions based on the number of chiral centres created in the product by comparison with the number present in the starting material*coverage of the majority of important reaction types used in modern stereoselective synthesis*a detailed analysis of factors which bring about asymmetric induction: the interplay between steric and electronic effects, the importance of conformational control and the advantages of intramolecularity in reactions*emphasis on synthesis of simple target molecules and on those steps which involve stereochemistry*realistic 3-D representations of transition states in which stereoselectivity is created*stereochemical vocabulary in accordance with IUPAC rulesStereoselective Synthesis is an invaluable aid not only to students in understanding this important area but also to those actively engaged in the syntheses of target molecules as single stereoisomers.

Ghosts. UFOs. Demonic activity. Shadow Governments. Margaret Sasha Davies had always felt more was going on in the world than the mainstream media was reporting. So when the left-leaning Brit met staunchly conservative Lucas Harrell while attending school in Charleston, an unusual and lasting friendship began. Lucas felt the same way and, over the years, the two built a large database of alternative news and paranormal material, investigating everything from cryptozoology to political corruption. Now a state law enforcement officer, Lucas feeds information to Sasha for her radio and internet show, Sasha's Realm. She, in turn, helps him solve some very bizarre cases. When Lucas is partnered with straight-laced Navy veteran Carol Ann "Skipper" LeBlanc, the pseudonym "White Man in the Graveyard" is resurrected to protect his identity as Sasha's source. From the Spanish Moss-draped oaks of the Low Country to the pine thickets of the Sand Hills, Lucas and Skipper confront some of South Carolina's creepiest haunts and legends. Like when a massive thunderstorm leaves rural Lee County without electricity and a long-forgotten nightmare from African-American folklore returns. A missing person case puts the agents in the middle of it all to face the dreaded "Flats and Blacks." They also discover that an old Cherokee blanket or a musty, stuffed animal can become the best friends that lonely children can have. They find out that even common farm animals can be trouble when filled with the wrong spirits and, of course, voodoo is nothing to casually dabble in. Lucas and Skipper are rescued by a WWII hero; the only problem is that he died in that war. A flamboyant Civil War officer also makes an appearance, to see how the South is fairing in the war of Northern aggression. Apparently, death isn't even the end of the story, provided you negotiated your contract well. If that wasn't enough, they stumble upon the descendants of a race of giants known as the Nephilim. Though not quite as massive as their forefathers chronicled in the Christian Bible, these "mighty men of renown" nonetheless prove to be quite a handful. And they've not forgotten the old plan to subdue the Seed of Adam "The white man in the graveyard," the old man said. "He's tryin' to put back what never shoulda' been let out." Those were the words that made Lucas a local legend and began his journey through the supernatural.

Supply-Side Follies is a progressive political and economic challenge to the current George W. Bush policies. It debunks commonly held assumptions of conservative economic policies centered on the obsession that tax cuts led to greater productivity and prosperity. These fundamentally flawed policies are setting the United States up for a major economic downturn in the near future. The 21st century knowledge economy requires a fundamentally different approach to boosting growth than simply cutting taxes on the richest investors. The alternative is not, however, to resurrect old Keynesian, populist economics as too many Democrats hope to do. Rather, as Rob Atkinson makes clear, our long-term national welfare and prosperity depends on new economic strategy that fits the realities of the 21st century global, knowledge-based economy: innovation-based growth economics.

First-person narratives are a fundamental tool of the qualitative researcher. One of the latest volumes in the Qualitative Research Methods series, The Life Story Interview provides specific suggestions and guidelines for preparing and executing a life story interview. Author Robert Atkinson, Director of the Center for the Study of Lives at the University of Southern Maine, places the life story interview into a wider research context before moving on to planning and conducting the interview. Atkinson carefully covers the classic functions of stories, the research uses of life stories, generating data from a life story, and the art and science of life story interviewing. He also thoroughly examines the potential benefits of sharing a life story, getting the information desired and questions to ask, and transcribing and interpreting the interview. To provide further support for the reader, the book concludes with a sample life story interview. As the use and study of narratives continues to grow in importance throughout the research enterprise, The Life Story Interview becomes an even-more valuable tool for qualitative researchers in all disciplines.

Throughout American history, periodic cycles of economic change have fundamentally reordered the way we work, the organization of business and markets, the role of government, and even the nature of politics. If we are to control our future, we must understand this process of change. These economic transformations are powered by the emergence of waves of new technologies. In the 1890s, the development of electricity and cheap steel led to a new, factory-based economy. In the 1940s and 1950s, automation and advances in electronics and chemicals created a new national corporate, mass-production economy. Since the 1990s, an information technology revolution has again created a robust New Economy.Robert Atkinson examines this process of change over the past 150 years and explores the responses of people and institutions. The book then analyzes today's New Economy, including the new information technology system, and effects on markets, organizations, workers, and governance. Taking into account the historical record, the book discusses the shortcomings of prevailing liberal and conservative economic doctrines and lays out a new growth economics agenda aimed at maximizing the productivity-enhancing forces of the New Economy. Anyone interested in American history as well as the future contours of our economy will find Dr Atkinson's insightful analyses a fascinating guide to the past and a provocative challenge for the future. Economists, business leaders, scholars, and economic policymakers will find it a necessary addition to the literature on economic cycles and growth economics.

Technologies and tech companies are routinely accused of creating many societal problems. This book exposes these charges as mostly myths, falsehoods, and exaggerations. Technology Fears and Scapegoats debunks 40 widespread myths about Big Tech, Big Data, AI, privacy, trust, polarization, automation, and similar fears, while exposing the scapegoating behind these complaints. The result is a balanced and positive view of the societal impact of technology thus far. The book takes readers through the steps and mindset necessary to restore the West’s belief in technological progress. Each individual chapter provides a cogent and often controversial rebuttal to a common tech accusation. The resulting text will inspire conversations among tech insiders, policymakers, and the general public alike.
