Turbulent Streams

Turbulent Streams

Roderick I. Wilson

BRILL

sidottu
In Turbulent Streams: An Environmental History of Japan’s Rivers, 1600–1930, Roderick I. Wilson describes how the rivers of Japan are both hydrologically and historically dynamic. Today, these waterways are slowed, channeled, diverted, and dammed by a myriad of levees, multiton concrete tetrapods, and massive multipurpose dams. In part, this intensive engineering arises from the waterways falling great elevations over short distances, flowing over unstable rock and soil, and receiving large quantities of precipitation during monsoons and typhoons. But this modern river regime is also the product of a history that narrowed both these waterways and people’s diverse interactions with them in the name of flood control. Neither a story of technological progress nor environmental decline, this history introduces the concept of environmental relations as a category of historical analysis both to explore these fluvial interactions and reveal underappreciated dimensions of Japanese history.
The Thermophysical Properties of Metallic Liquids: THERMO PROP METALL LIQUID PCK

The Thermophysical Properties of Metallic Liquids: THERMO PROP METALL LIQUID PCK

Takamichi Iida; Roderick I. L. Guthrie

This two volume set provides a clear understanding of the essence of a metallic liquid's thermophysical properties which is indispensable for improving, or innovating any liquid metal processing operation or product quality. The thermophysical properties of metallic liquids are presented, i.e. liquid metals, semimetals, and semiconductors, analysed in relation to our current understanding of the underlying structure of a metallic liquid on the atomic scale and of the electron configuration of an element. The authors' interdisciplinary approach brings together knowledge from various subject areas including: process metallurgy, materials science, condensed matter physics, chemistry, metrology. They introduce new dimensionless parameters to characterise the atomic states of metallic liquids (i.e. an atom's hardness or softness, its anharmonic motions, and the spatial arrangement of the atoms in a metallic liquid), as revealed through data for the velocity of sound in the metallic liquids. The two new simple parameters, common to all elements, allow for better predictions of several important thermophysical properties of liquid metallic elements.

Volume 2 considers the essential conditions for a model to be truly predictive. The authors use a statistical approach to rate the validity of the various predictive models that have been previously used for evaluating various thermophysical properties. On the basis of this assessment, the authors have predicted values for the thermophysical properties of elemental metallic liquids, which are lacking in experimental data. They believe their predicted values are at least as reliable, and sometimes more reliable than corresponding experimental values. According to the periodic law, the authors provide the periodic variations in values of some twelve physical quantities or thermophysical properties. This is based on the electron configuration in the outermost energy level of metallic elements. Finally, a large number of experimental data for the physical quantities and thermophysical properties of liquid metallic elements are compiled.

Paul I of Russia, 1754-1801

Paul I of Russia, 1754-1801

Roderick E. McGrew

Clarendon Press
1992
sidottu
This is the first full modern biography of Paul I, son of Catherine the Great and Tsar of Russia 1796-1801. Considered by some to have been a cruel despot verging on the insane, Paul has been seen by others as a progressive if flawed ruler who was overthrown because he challenged the privileged nobility. Roderick McGrew explores the influences which shaped Paul's values and behaviour, assessing the role played by his upbringing, his relations with his mother and her court, and the powerful effect of the French Revolution. He examines Paul's insecure, unpredictable, and often violent character, and traces his gradual evolution into a committed autocrat who combined enlightened humanitarianism with a firm belief in military discipline and hierarchy. As Tsar, he aroused fear, hatred, and contempt among his nobles, resulting in a coup d'état which ended his brief reign and his life. Professor McGrew's intensively researched study not only offers a portrait of a complex ruler and his times, but also assesses the part played by Paul in establishing the deeply conservative political outlook which characterized Russia in the nineteenth century.

Story telling is an age-old tradition used to teach lessons. Stories are sometimes referred to as myths, fables, riddles, epics, and the like. In both Jewish and Christian tradition, when individuals wanted to explain a spiritual truth, they used stories known as parables. In this book, we will examine the parables of the hidden treasure, the pearl of great price, and the unmerciful servant. Readers will discover the value of the kingdom of God and the importance of forgiveness.

Building Filipino Hawai'i

Roderick N Labrador

University of Illinois Press

Drawing on ten years of interviews and ethnographic and archival research, Roderick Labrador delves into the ways Filipinos in Hawai'i have balanced their pursuit of upward mobility and mainstream acceptance with a desire to keep their Filipino identity. In particular, Labrador speaks to the processes of identity making and the politics of representation among immigrant communities striving to resist marginalization in a globalized, transnational era. Critiquing the popular image of Hawai'i as a postracial paradise, he reveals how Filipino immigrants talk about their relationships to the place(s) they left and the place(s) where they've settled, and how these discourses shape their identities. He also shows how the struggle for community empowerment, identity territorialization, and the process of placing and boundary making continue to affect how minority groups construct the stories they tell about themselves, to themselves and others.
