Strategies for Protecting Your Child's Immune System is the first book to focus on prevention of environmental damage to the immune system of embryos, babies and older children. It provides expecting and existing parents, their families and physicians with science-based information to protect and proactively manage their child's immune system. Environmental exposures (pollutants, allergens, drugs, diet, physical factors) in the home, school and community can damage the developing immune system and increase the risk of lifelong chronic diseases such as allergies, asthma, type 1 diabetes, celiac disease and neurological problems. This book imparts specific tools to parents and their physicians to help keep the early-life immune system out of harm's way and minimize environmental health risk.

Science Sifting is designed primarily as a textbook for students interested in research and as a general reference book for existing career scientists. The aim of this book is to help budding scientists broaden their capacities to access and use information from diverse sources to the benefit of their research careers. The book describes why the capacity to access and integrate both linear and nonlinear information has been an important historic feature of pivotal scientific breakthroughs. Yet, it is a process that our students are rarely, if ever, taught in universities. This book goes beyond simply describing the features of great scientific breakthroughs. It discusses the basis for accessing and using nonlinear information in the linear research context. It also provides a series of tools and exercises that can be used to enhance access to nonlinear information for application to research and other endeavors.Topics covered include focal points in scientific breakthroughs, the use of concepts maps in research, use of different vantage points, information as patterns, fractals for the scientist, memory storage and access points, and synchronicities. Young researchers need useful tools to help with a more holistic approach to their research careers. This book provides the useful tools to support flexibility and creativity across a long-term research career.Roald Hoffmann — Winner of the 1981 Nobel Prize in Chemistry — has contributed the to Science Sifting. The idea for this book was conceived over the second bottle of Villa Maria's Caber net Medot '89, at the dinner of the Australasian Combinatorics Conference held at Palmerston North, New Zealand in December 1990, where the authors first met and discovered they had a number of interests in common. Initially, we embarked on a small project to try to formulate reductions to address the apparent parame terized intractability of DOMINATING SET, and to introduce a structure in which to frame our answers. Having spent several months trying to get the definitions for the reductions right (they now seem so obvious), we turned to our tattered copies of Garey and Johnson's work [239]. We were stunned to find that virtually none of the classical reductions worked in the parameterized setting. We then wondered if we'd be able to find any interesting reductions. Several years, many more bottles, so many papers, and reductions later it [3] seemed that we had unwittingly stumbled upon what we believe is a truly central and new area of complexity theory. It seemed to us that the material would be of great interest to people working in areas where exact algorithms for a small range of parameters are natural and useful (e. g. , Molecular Biology, VLSI design). The tractability theory was rich with distinctive and powerful techniques. The intractability theory seemed to have a deep structure and techniques all of its own.

Ten noted religious studies scholars examine the sacred scriptures of Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Christianity, and Mormonism to produce an authoritative, comprehensive survey of the writings that shape the world's major religions. The Holy Book in Comparative Perspective concentrates on the origins, forms, and functions of scriptures in religious life. This volume also includes a thought-provoking chapter on the transmission of sacred traditions among nonliterate populations and a rebuttal of the widespread elevation of ""primitive"" traditions over literate traditions.

With the exploitation of natural resources for agriculture and livestock, the loss of native forests and gallery forests in Brazil occurs. The book aimed to conduct studies on the recovery of degraded area in the gallery forests of Ribeir o S o Jo o, located in the municipality of Palmas - TO and evaluate the initial stage of this recovery. Through the Enrichment of Species, to assist natural regeneration, we used seedlings of native plants that were suitable to the conditions imposed by the environment and the degree of disturbance of the chosen area. The area has species remaining, a fundamental factor for the establishment of a revegetation with characteristics close to its initial stage. It was noted that the species Inga sp., Enterolobium contortisiliquum and Pouteria macrophilla have good survival rates through species enrichment, as well as providing rapid soil cover, even without special soil treatment.

"The authors have done a commendable and impressive job of addressing a topic of long-lasting and increasing significance in U.S. politics."---F. Chris Garcia, University of New Mexico"This is a path-breaking book that will be read across disciplines beyond political science."---James Jennings, Tufts UniversityOver the past four decades, the United States has experienced the largest influx of immigrants in its history. Not only has the ratio of European to non-European newcomers changed, but recent arrivals are coming from the Asian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, South America, and other regions which have not previously supplied many immigrants to the United States. In this timely study, a team of political scientists examines how the arrival of these newcomers has affected the efforts of long-standing minority groups---Blacks, Latinos, and Asian Pacific Americans---to gain equality through greater political representation and power. The authors predict that, for some time to come, the United States will function as a complex multiracial hierarchy, rather than as a genuine democracy. Engineering in the Life Sciences, 9–12 provides how-to advice that will make the book your go-to resource. It offers six standards-based lessons that show how to infuse engineering concepts into existing courses. It also provides wide-ranging material from each of the major content areas in biological sciences, including structures and processes, ecosystems, heredity, and biological evolution. Spark your high school students’ interest with lesson titles such as “Designer DNA,” “Ecosystem Board Game,” and “B-pocalypse.” Inspired by extensive field testing, the authors made the book easy to use in diverse settings by supplementing the lessons with detailed support materials and adding chapters on managing engineering-oriented activities and conducting assessments. They also included teaching tips and connections to standards, plus five case studies about how engineering concepts and science intersect to address human needs. The result is lessons that are eminently doable, illustrating how you can use an authentic engineering approach to engage students with the life sciences.

Segregation in Federally Subsidized Low-Income Housing in the United States

Earlier studies of subsidized housing assume that segregation is a manifestation of white prejudice, and that the Fair Housing Act of 1968 would significantly remedy inequalities in housing and, in the process, narrow the socioeconomic gap between racial groups. This book argues, on the contrary, that segregation by race and income has been an integral part of federal housing policy from its inception and that white prejudice merely obscures the federal government's role in maintaining segregation. Despite formal claims of providing decent, safe, and sanitary housing for the poor, the authors show how federal low-income housing programs have been used as instruments of urban renewal while doing little to realize their formal goals. The authors use a historical and statistical review of federally subsidized low-rent housing to demonstrate their thesis.
