A Far-Infrared Spectro-Spatial Space Interferometer

A Far-Infrared Spectro-Spatial Space Interferometer

Roser Juanola-Parramon

Springer International Publishing AG

This thesis describes the physics and computational aspects of an end-to-end simulator to predict the performance of a Space-based Far Infrared Interferometer. The present thesis also includes, the science capabilities and instrumental state-of-the art. The latter is the ambitious next step which the Far-Infrared Astrophysical community needs to take to improve in anyway on the results of the most recent and current space telescopes in this wavelength region. This thesis outlines the requirements involved in such a mission and describes the most promising technique to capture most of the astrophysical information by combining spectroscopy to spatial interferometer. The simulation of such a system is extremely complex requiring multiple Fourier transforms each of which is subject to instrument non-idealities and appropriate optimization techniques. As a conclusion, the thesis provides an example of the basic performance achievable with such an instrument when targeting a young star formation region.

Learn how to go beyond good intentions and create real change in the world. In a world full of seemingly intractable problems, many Christians wonder if their efforts make any real difference--or if they're just throwing money and time into a void. All the Lives You Can Change directly addresses this question, pointing Christians to impactful opportunities for loving their neighbors. It encourages readers to go beyond conventional philanthropy, symbolic actions, and feel-good volunteering and to discover surprising tools from effective altruism--an evidence-based approach to doing the most good. Drawing on Scripture, years of nonprofit management experience, and research from experts at Oxford, the authors equip followers of Christ to turn compassion into meaningful, measurable change. This book offers practical tools to: Prioritize needs: Identify where money and energy most impactfully solve pressing, neglected global issues--taking Jesus's radical command to love your neighbor seriously. Give smarter: Leverage proven, evidence-backed strategies to achieve results hundreds of times greater per dollar than traditional charity. Develop powerful careers: Clarify one's calling and pursue careers that don't just feel meaningful but genuinely glorify God and significantly improve the world. Full of eye-opening case studies, sharp biblical insights, and candid advice, All the Lives You Can Change is a roadmap for a life that makes a difference. Professionals short on purpose, church leaders eager to mobilize their congregations into meaningful action, and students uncertain about the future will all learn how to move past good intentions and into genuine, world-changing outcomes that radically transform the lives of the world's most vulnerable people.

This title was first published in 2000. An examination of environment and marginality in geographical space. It discusses the issue of marginalization from the point of view of the environment by using the viewpoints of land use, landscape and development. The aim of the book is to provide an overview of the issues at hand, while keeping a close connection with practical real-world examples of what, where and how environmental issues manifest on marginal areas. The book is divided into four main parts, which address: land use and environment; territorial marginalization; development in margins and peripheries; and summary and conclusions.

The link between justice and climate change is becoming increasingly prominent in public debates on climate policy. This clear and concise philosophical introduction to climate justice addresses the hot topic of climate change as a moral challenge.Using engaging everyday examples the authors address the core arguments by providing a comprehensive and balanced overview of this heated debate, enabling students and practitioners to think critically about the subject area and to promote discussion on questions such as: Why do anything in the face of climate change? How much do we owe our descendants – a better world, or nothing at all?How should we distribute the burden of climate action between industrialized and developing countries?Should I adopt a green lifestyle even if no one else makes an effort?Which means of reducing emissions are permissible? Should we put hope in technological solutions?Should we re-design democratic institutions for more effective climate policy? With chapter summaries, illustrative examples and suggestions for further reading, this book is an ideal introduction for students in political philosophy, applied ethics and environmental ethics, as well as for practitioners working on one of the most urgent issues of our time.
