Published to accompany an exhibition at the Science Museum, London, in spring 2016, this catalogue features 100 high-quality reproductions of Talbot's work. Through two introductory essays, the book examines how Talbot's invention of photography in the 1830s, evolved to establish the artistic, scientific and industrial possibilities for photography. As a radically new way of seeing, Talbot set out how the medium of photography had the ability to open up the visual world to a different kind of scrutiny, as well as to reaffirm what was considered to be 'real'. Such experiments make Talbot's practice and thinking all the more complex and lasting but also provocative as he sits between ambitions of art and science through photography, and economic gain. The book furthermore discusses the relationships between a network of photographers who gravitated towards Talbot's process but each of whom took photography into different territory. Assessing their artistic contribution and social legacy, it reflects on how enthusiasm for photography was initially limited to a small close-knit, elite group of people.William Henry Fox Talbot is a testament to Talbot's magical and industrial visions for his invention, that range from the delicate capture of natural specimens to more staged and functional ambitions for photography as means of mass production. It will be of interest to the art enthusiast and general historian of nineteenth-century innovation, as well as to all those curious to learn more about this pioneer of photography.

1936: After twelve-year-old Graeme Moodie recovers from polio, he's left with a pronounced limp. Unable to handle a 'normal' boarding school with its beatings and bullying, he goes to Maiden Erlegh School for Boys which, Moodie later claimed, changed his life. The story is largely true. Whispered by locals to take all sorts of misfits and oddballs, the school is the brainchild of Captain TS Waterlow Fox, an ex-Army captain who rules with an iron fist in a velvet glove. 'We're all different, we're all the same,' is his message. Graeme's intelligence shines. His roommates are Paul Caspari, a Jewish refugee from Germany, and Charlie Marshall, a stutterer, badly damaged by his parents' nasty divorce. Graeme feels at home, and for the first time in years, happy. Now if only he could find a girlfriend - that would be heaven. But by 1939, as storm clouds of war grow ever closer, a German student joins the Nazi party, which threatens to shatter Maiden Erlegh's bubble of sanity.

Amid a satisfying career with one of Corporate World's largest companies, N. Oldman is stricken with acute arrhythmia and suffers four sudden cardiac arrests-essentially dying several times. As he struggles to recover from these debilitating and traumatic events, there's another world he can escape to, Fox World, a sixty-acre wilderness holdover on the outskirts of Washington, DC. There, years before, he saved a wild fox pup from starving. After weeks of medical treatment, "Old Man" takes a few healing steps into Fox World where he encounters his old friend Mr. Fox, who has not forgotten his one-time savior. Old Man sets a bold rehab goal to walk 500 miles in a year, and he's accompanied by the wild fox every step of the way. Starting in a brutally cold winter, followed by the hottest, wettest summer on record, fox and man face daunting life events and obstacles, from an attack on the fox by a coyote, to the abrupt end of the man's career, to life-threatening illness and injuries, to the looming destruction of the fox's habitat by developers. And through it all, Mr. Fox's wild perspective teaches his human friend invaluable, unforgettable lessons about healing, life balance, serenity, pursuing wonderment, bravery, mindfulness, survival, coping, dedication, partnership, and appreciation for the simplest things (e.g., a forest escape from Human World, the sun setting atop the great oaks, an owl serenade under moon beams, or a shared cup of bison and blueberry bone broth). Richly graced with gorgeous nature photos and infused with insights that can only be imparted by those who have come to genuinely appreciate life, Fox World is an exhilarating walk in the woods that you'll never forget.
