TOWARDS is compiled from parts of my journal. My journal is my place to explore ideas and record moments that touch me in words, in pictures and in open space. Those open spaces, ideas and images are an invitation to you to allow thoughts and feelings to arise within you and join me in a journaling process that is leading you to know what you know and believe what you believe. If along the way something sparks a sharp feeling or a wound, pause and see what it means for you. Take the gift of time that you have given yourself 'being' in this book and let it help you become the best version of you.
A Jewish Girl & a Not-So-Jewish Boy: A Memoir from New Jersey to Hawaii
Sandra M. Z. Armstrong

Sandra is a Jewish girl, studying theatre arts at Rutgers College and more interested in dating around than diving into a serious relationship. Don is a wrestler, a guitar player who loves hanging around the girls' dormitory and is a Presbyterian. He keeps a toothbrush in his back pocket at all times because he never knows what might turn up. When this Jewish girl and not-so-Jewish boy meet, what turns up is an entertaining, interfaith relationship that brings new challenges and plenty of heartfelt moments. But Sandra M. Z. Armstrong's memoir is more than an endearing love story-it's a straightforward, layperson's guide to understanding, adopting, and practicing Judaism. Whether you are currently in-or considering-an interfaith relationship or simply want to learn more about Judaism, this book is a source of inspiration for anyone struggling to achieve religious balance. You will find her descriptions of Shabbat, festivals, celebrations, and community connections as accessible ways to gradually adopt and implement a Jewish lifestyle. Find out how Sandra and Don make it work, then see if you can too. By the end, you may be inspired to write about your own spiritual journey.
John McDowell's Mind and World has, since its publication in 1994, become a seminal text, putting forward many new ideas on the manner in which concepts mediate the relation between minds and the world. Yet McDowell's ideas are not easy to comprehend. In this book Sandra Dingli both elaborates and simplifies McDowell's ideas in order to give greater clarity to them and to assist in the understanding and appreciation of his work. Dingli selects five particular contemporary philosophical topics which McDowell deals with and investigates in detail the implications of particular points of view, analysing the current literature on each topic and drawing out shortcomings and possibilities for overcoming them. This work is, then, both a critique and complement to McDowell's text. McDowell's project is to dissolve a number of dualisms such as sensibility and understanding, conceptual and non conceptual content, scheme and content, and reason and nature. Dingli critically analyses each of these and claims that a proper understanding of the philosophical method of quietism is important for a correct understanding of this text, concluding that McDowell does not go far enough in his attempt to attain peace for philosophy as traditional dichotomies such as that of realism and anti-realism still appear to exert a grip on his thinking.
Examples of constructing history through film, the three fictional narratives which are the focus of Sandra Grayson's study provide insight into how the role of the African American woman has been overlooked to the point of suppression. The women in these works are presented as warriors, educators, healers, seers, oral historians, as well as mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives. Through research into archival materials and study of the symbols encoded in the films themselves, Symbolizing the Past reveals the gap between the reality of black mythic history and its representation.
What makes us open to mystery, to glimpses of the Transcendent in our daily lives? The power of the imagination, according to Sandra Levy -- a power that has been seriously depleted in today's postmodern culture. To address and redress this situation, Levy first explores how the imagination expresses itself -- through ritual, music, poetry, art, and story -- and then focuses on specific practices that can exercise and enrich our spiritual capacity, thus opening us up to divine encounter. Imagination and the Journey of Faith will speak to both those outside of a religious tradition and those in faith communities who wish to strengthen and deepen the imaginative power of their spiritual lives.
Is there a plot against the life of letters today?!!!! A mysterious assailant has tied a nameless text to a railroad track near Boondock State University. While young untenured English professor Jane Marple enlists a group of odd and oddly rivalrous academicians to help her identify and save the text, a coalition of powerful conservatives begins to suspect and rally against a left-wing conspiracy. But all are foiled when the amnesiac text is abducted on the Euro-Centric Express, where Ms. Marple encounters a number of suspiciously eccentric theorists temporarily set loose from their usual haunts in Marxist, deconstructionist, new historicist, and postcolonial circles. You'll laugh with our heroine, you'll cry with her, but you'll never guess how--using the very latest technology and in the midst of sometimes sinister stage and screen celebrities--she brings the last of three thrilling episodes in the canon wars to an end at a WOW (Writers of the World) conference set in the heart of the Big Apple. In this hilarious romp through the culture wars, Sandra M. Gilbert and Susan Gubar send up everyone including, sometimes, themselves, while at the same time they speculate seriously on the future of literature and literacy in a society where both are increasingly endangered. The cast includes well-known critics, politicians, writers, pop stars, media personalities, and a juicy assortment of technocrats, CEOs, and other culture vultures. Any similarities you find between these characters and actual persons, living or dead, are probably glaring. So, hum the opening notes of Masterpiece Theatre as you sit back, relax, and consider (yes!) the fate of the printed word in Western civilization.Masterpiece Theatre is the latest--and funniest--round in the culture wars. No member of Modern Language Association, lover of literature and literacy, cultural pundit, or talking head should be without a copy.
In this new edition of her major study of the New Testament, Sandra Schneiders proposes a comprehensive hermeneutical theory for New Testament interpretation, which takes full account of the Bible as both sacred Scripture and as a historical-literary classic. Designed to spur reflection on the role of Scripture as revelatory text in the life of the Church and in the lives of individual believers, The Revelatory Text shows that an integral hermeneutical theory can ground a transformational hermeneutical praxis to make the biblical text available as a faith resource to the oppressed as well as to the privileged. Schneiders investigates the meaning of the theological claim that the Bible is the Word of God" and the "Church's book," along with the implications of these claims for biblical interpretation. She then examines the historical, literary, and religious-spiritual dimensions of the New Testament, highlighting the implications for interpretation theory and methodology, and concludes by putting her theory to the test in a feminist interpretation of John 4. The author argues that the comprehensive object of biblical interpretation is not merely information but transformation. She suggests that an adequate hermeneutical theory must include a wide range of exegetical and critical methods within a theologically and philosophically adequate understanding of Scripture as sacred text. She writes specifically to educated believers who wonder how sound biblical criticism can be incorporated into a faith- filled reading of the New Testament; biblical scholars who struggle with the question of whether or how faith can function legitimately in biblical scholarship; and those whose task it is to teach and preach the faith that looks to the New Testament as source and norm. Chapters are "The Problem and Project of New Testament Interpretation," "The New Testament as Word of God," "The New Testament as the Church's Book," "The World Behind the Test: History, Imagination, and the Revelatory Text," "The World of the Text: Witness, Language, and the Revelatory Text," "The World Before the Text: Meaning, Appropriation, and the Revelatory Text," and "A Case Study: Feminist Interpretation of John 4:1- 42."Sandra M. Schneiders, IHM, is professor of New Testament studies and Christian spirituality at the Jesuit School of Theology and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California."
Jesus Risen in Our Midst mines the Resurrection Narrative of John's gospel as a rich resource for understanding and developing Christian spirituality. In this series of essays, which can be read independently of one another, Scripture scholar Sandra Schneiders draws out especially fascinating insights on the place of the Resurrection in the overall structure of the Gospel of Johnthe important structure of John 20, which presents a series of episodes that are internally related to each other and constitute a distinctive synthesis of Christian spiritualitywhat the Resurrection story reveals about the New Covenant promised by Jeremiah and Ezekielthe anthropology and eschatology that is operative in John's account of the Resurrectionthe distinction in John between the Glorification and the Resurrection of Jesus

Rushing's seminal work addresses the ways in which modern women struggle with holistic spirituality, sexuality, and anger. She employs the Mary Magdalene model as an archetype in which sexuality and spirituality are united. Using extra-canonical texts, Rushing explores the dynamics of the relationship between the Magdalene and Jesus, one that created tension within the collective and was excluded from the canon itself. The Magdalene, known as the apostle to the apostles, has remained tainted through repressive scholarly action and deliberate distortion. Her historical treatment is paralleled for women today who wish to remain within the church but who experience a subtle, ongoing sexual bias. The author's blending of the sociological theory of Thorstein Veblen and the psychological constructs of Carl G. Jung is unique in its theological application.

First published in 1988, Social Class, Status and Teacher Trade Unionism examines some of the causes underlying the growing resentment of public sector professionals, focusing on the teachers in the polytechnics and colleges of further and higher education and on their union, once the Association of Teachers in Technical Institutions. It looks in depth at the relationship between professional commitment and trade union activism, and at the limits employee status, within a bureaucratic control structure, can impose on professional self-management and control. The book provides both an important social history of the teachers and teaching in this sector and an incisive analysis of the nature and development of ‘professional trade unions’. This book will be of interest to students of education, sociology and history.
