The Hummingbird will build her nest, The size? A ping pong ball. Secured to twigs with spider silk, This moss lined nest won't fall. Sarah Jane has created 20 luminous oil paintings depicting 10 familiar birds nesting, and put them together in Nesting Grounds. Each bird has 2 devoted paintings: The female in her nest and the nest with eggs. Additionally, the clutches in each nest increases incrementally from one to ten-the Sparrow having one egg up to the Wood Duck having ten. A 4-line verse accompanies each image describing the nesting ground unique to each bird. This artistically rendered book is ideal for artists and birders of all ages, and is a wonderful introduction to the nesting grounds of common birds. Birds featured in Nesting Grounds: Sparrow, Hummingbird, Robin, Cardinal, Plover, Goldfinch, Snow Bunting, Nuthatch, Chickadee, Wood Duck. Sarah Jane delights in her natural surroundings. She is inspired by the scenic beauty where she has lived, including her birthplace St. John's, Newfoundland. She draws immense enjoyment from watching birds visiting her back yard in Fall River, Nova Scotia. To see more of Sarah Jane's paintings, visit her website: www.sarahjaneconklin.ca
US Covert Operations and Cold War Strategy
Based on recently declassified documents, this book provides the first examination of the Truman Administration’s decision to employ covert operations in the Cold War. Although covert operations were an integral part of America’s arsenal during the late 1940s and early 1950s, the majority of these operations were ill conceived, unrealistic and ultimately doomed to failure. In this volume, the author looks at three central questions: Why were these types of operations adopted? Why were they conducted in such a haphazard manner? And, why, once it became clear that they were not working, did the administration fail to abandon them? The book argues that the Truman Administration was unable to reconcile policy, strategy and operations successfully, and to agree on a consistent course of action for waging the Cold War. This ensured that they wasted time and effort, money and manpower on covert operations designed to challenge Soviet hegemony, which had little or no real chance of success.US Covert Operations and Cold War Strategy will be of great interest to students of US foreign policy, Cold War history, intelligence and international history in general.

This unique textbook explores practice-based research (PBR), using numerous practice examples to actively encourage and engage students and practitioners to embrace research as a meaningful support for their practice. Whilst evidence-based practice gives practitioners access to information about "universal" best practices, it does not prioritize practitioner-generated knowledge or promote new research-based interventions relevant to their own practice circumstances as PBR does. This book discusses the evolution of PBR as a distinct social work research approach, describes its principles and methods and presents a range of exemplars illustrating the application of PBR within different practice methods in different practice settings. The chapters cover:Identifying the research question in a PBR model Designing a study and identifying a methodology Sampling Literature reviews Gathering data Ethics Analyzing data and interpreting results Putting research into practice Viewing the practitioner as central to the research process, and research as a necessary component of practice, this invaluable book emphasizes the seamless integration of practice and research. It is about research in social work practice rather than research on social work practice. Each chapter includes an overview, an introduction, and a key concepts summary. Practice-Based Research in Social Work is a very accessible text suitable for social work students, particularly MSW students, and practitioners.

The author, now in her 50s, living amidst a pandemic lockdown, sits in the garden shed and considers the many contrasts to life as a young Kiwi in the 1990s when she had the freedom to travel the world. In doing so, she was led from Papamoa Beach in the Bay of Plenty to the rooftop of the world. In her early twenties she meets the epitome of an English gentleman, a colleague in a London PR company. Their relationship moves through a decade of trials as friends, holiday romance and then an attempt at a longer term commitment. Learning lessons from each country and maturing to find the teacher within, she reflects on whether her life journey has been written in the stars. A travelogue in which to immerse yourself, capturing a true love story.

During their heyday in the mid-eighteenth century the pleasure gardens were one of the hubs of polite society. Laid out with formal gardens and buildings for dining and amusement, the pleasure gardens were the scene of upper class exercise and entertainment. Most famous were Vauxhall Gardens, Cremorne Gardens and Ranelagh Gardens. In Bath, Sydney Gardens is the only English pleasure garden that has not since been closed and built over. This book tells the story of the pleasure gardens, explaining their beginnings in the seventeenth century, their rising social importance, the variety of entertainment contained within, and their eventual decline into seedy hangouts for gamblers, thieves and prostitutes.

The source of tremendous power and the focus of incredible devotion, throughout history notions of beauty have been integral to social life and culture. Each age has had its own standards: a gleaming white brow during the Renaissance, the black eyebrows considered charming in the early eighteenth century, and the thin lips thought desirable by Victorians. Beauty has ensured good marriages, enabled social mobility and offered fame and notoriety, and has led women – and some men – to remarkable lengths in cultivating it, from the dangerous quantities of lead applied by Elizabeth I, to the women of the 1940s and '50s, who employed face powder, lipstick and mascara to look their best during the privations of war and austerity, creating a chic appearance to which many still aspire.

Garments and accessories are prominent in almost all of William Shakespeare’s plays, from Hamlet and Othello to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Twelfth Night. The statement 'Clothes maketh the man’ was one that would have resonated with their audiences: the rise of England's merchant class had made issues of rank central to Elizabethan debate, and a rigid table of sumptuary laws carefully regulated the sorts of fabric and garment worn by the different classes. From the etiquette of courtly dress to the evolution of the Elizabethan ruff, in this vibrant introduction Sarah Jane Downing explores the sartorial world of the late-16th century, why people wore the clothes they did, and how the dizzyingly eclectic range of fashions (including ruffs, rebatos and French farthingales) transformed over time.
