The Ocean in the Next Room

The Ocean in the Next Room

Winner of the Jake Adam York Prize, this collection of poems seeks answers about how to live meaningfully in a world saturated by late capitalism.“The question isn’t / what exists,” writes Sarah V. Schweig in her engrossing and prize-winning collection, “The question is what doesn’t / die with us?” Positioned from within the morass of modern-day living, The Ocean in the Next Room searches for the hard, abiding particles of truth buried beneath our frenzied consumer culture. Stillness. Sunsets. The circadian rhythm of trees. These poems guide us to look past branding, content-creation, and relentless jargon to find meaning in those layers of the world that operate without human intervention. In verse that is at once inventive and innately familiar, Schweig unpacks the urge to make art, life, and connections even at the risk of becoming further entangled in the Anthropocene. Profound and clear-sighted, this collection urges us to lift our gazes from our screens and really look at the world around us. If we measure our attentions and sharpen our intentions, if we “try again to write / the true things,” we might spy something real on the horizon.

There are worlds we can imagine, but we live in this one: contingent and absurd. In her fi rst full-length collection, Sarah V. Schweig aims to capture something essential and universal about this faulted inheritance. These poems operate on the notion that the lyric can be discovered in scattered headlines, office-wide emails, road signs—the detritus of the everyday. But a poem doesn’t stop at found fragments; it creates something from them. These poems question and requestion what can be truthfully said, rediscovering the lyric in the very process of thinking, revising, and re-envisioning.

Set more than 6,000 years ago, She Who Rides Horses: A Saga of the Ancient Steppe (Book One) begins the story of Naya, the first person ever to ride a horse. Daughter of a clan chief, bolder than the other girls but shunned by the boys because of her unusual appearance, Naya often wanders alone through the vast grasslands where her people herd domesticated cattle, sheep and goats, and hunt wild horses for their meat. But Naya dreams of creating a different kind of relationship with the magnificent creatures. One day, while out roaming by herself, she discovers a filly with a chestnut coat as uncommon as her own head of red hair. With time running out before she is called to assume the responsibilities of adulthood, Naya embarks on a quest to fulfill her vision of galloping with the filly across the boundless steppe. Unwittingly, she sets in motion forces and events that will change forever the future of humans and horses alike.Based on extensive interdisciplinary research, She Who Rides Horses imagines an encounter between a girl and a horse that is both timeless and grounded in fact. First and foremost a story, filled with adventure, peril, love and betrayal, the saga of Naya and the red filly also portrays fundamental shifts that occurred when humans went from living as herders and hunter/gatherers, dependent on their own two feet, to becoming mounted nomads, capable of spreading their language, lifestyle and beliefs across a huge swath of Eurasia and beyond. The domestication of the horse altered the course of history, transforming power dynamics, impacting gender relations and accelerating the diffusion of new assumptions about the nature of the cosmos and the relationship between humans and the natural world that we are still living with today. This is how it may have all begun...
In Search of the Dioskouroi. Image, Myth and Cult
Who were the Dioskouroi? This study sets out to revisit the evidence and explore the Greeks’ experience of the Spartan brothers Kastor and Polydeukes in image, myth and cult. Commonly equated with the Roman Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, first by Roman writers in antiquity and subsequently by their western successors, the Greek Dioskouroi are here examined as they were represented in the period before the Roman hegemony of Greece. The evidence is explored through a series of case studies, chosen to focus chiefly on the brothers’ homelands in myth – Sparta, Messene and Argos in the Peloponnese. Also reviewed is their presence on Eastern Aegean shores, and on trading routes where Greeks and other mariners may have sought the protection of the Dioskouroi, above all Thera, Kyrene and Naukratis. Our journey of rediscovery also includes Delos, crossroads of cultures in antiquity. In the process, some fresh perspectives have emerged, not least that Kastor and Polydeukes may not always have been synonymous with the Dioskouroi and, when they were, that appellation may have carried a specific and votive meaning.

'This is a book that should set off needed conversations in every school and classroom and school board meeting-and the dinner table. Sometimes I wanted to quarrel with the authors, and that's part of its genius. It always managed to provoke me to think and to engage with these dilemmas' - Deborah Meier, Senior Scholar and Adjunct Professor, New York University, USA 'The Mackenzies show us how to recognize moral dilemmas, employ guidelines for addressing them, and teach us how to resolve them on our own. A gift to educators, the educational profession, and to all who would behave ethically and professionally within it' - Roland Barth, Educational Consultant Teachers deal with ethical issues on a regular basis, from confidentiality regarding student information to discipline to communication. As moral exemplars, teachers need guidance for handling such challenges. Written by an educator and a national authority on ethics, this professional development resource helps teachers confront and resolve ethical questions. Featuring richly detailed, real-life case studies, this volume outlines the intricate relationship between ethical propriety and school success. Chapters focus on: - The role of teachers in developing, sharing, and implementing ethical policies for their schools - Four guiding principles-the Rule of Publicity, the Rule of Universality, the Rule of Benevolence, and the Golden Rule—for developing ethical approaches and practices - Relationships between teachers and students, colleagues, supervisors, parents, taxpayers, and other stakeholders With a facilitation guide and a matrix of cases with corresponding ethical principles, Now What? Confronting and Resolving Ethical Questions is a crucial tool for ensuring equality of opportunity and a quality learning environment for all involved in the educational process.

How the Party at the Mailbox efforts in 2020-2024 led by Black Girls Vote used celebrations of community to increase voter turnout Black voters continue to transform America's electoral landscape and can play a powerful role in determining the outcome of elections. In Party at the Ballot Box, Melissa R. Michelson, Stephanie L. DeMora, and Sarah V. Hayes explore the impact of celebratory voter mobilization campaigns led by Black-led organizations on Black turnout, particularly as more states embrace voting-by-mail. Focusing on the Party at the Mailbox (PATM) initiative, coordinated by Black Girls Vote, Michelson, DeMora, and Hayes underscore what, exactly, motivates Black voters to show up to the polls. Using community-based informational and celebratory packages of materials, and with a mixed methods approach that includes randomized controlled trials, surveys, interviews, and focus groups, they show us how the PATM pilot increased Black turnout in Baltimore by double digits in the 2020 primaries. Despite voting by mail while sheltering in place, PATM made voters feel part of something bigger than themselves—that they were voting as a community. The successful pilot led to further PATM efforts in Atlanta, Baltimore, Detroit, Richmond, and Philadelphia between November 2020 and November 2024. Ultimately, the authors argue that Black Americans vote as a celebration of community, and that cultivating that sense of community is an effective means of increasing Black voter turnout. With a foreword by Nykidra Robinson, founder of Black Girls Vote, Party at the Ballot Box provides insights into Black voter turnout and its larger implications.

Sarah Althea Hill was a real beauty, a buxom, slender strawberry blonde with an engaging smile who broke upon the San Francisco social scene in the 1870s as a fascinatingly beautiful, witty, and intelligent young Southern lady of good family, possessed of moderate wealth, a woman readily welcomed into the city's best social circles. But Allie, as she preferred to be called, was also something of a rebel, chafing under the rigid role prescribed for ladies in the Victorian age. She desperately wanted to enjoy a luxurious life style without sacrificing her precious maidenly "honor" or her social position. By 1880, she had impulsively spent her family "fortune" and run out of money. She allowed herself to be lured into a sordid relationship with aging United States Senator William Sharon of Nevada, who happened to be San Francisco's richest man. When their relationship soured the following year, he threw her out on the street. Basing her claim on a scrap of paper which she claimed was a contract for a secret marriage, she had "the dear Senator" arrested for adultery, then sued him in state court for a divorce and a share of his vast fortune. He, in turn made a preemptive legal strike, suing her in federal court to have her marriage contract declared a forgery and threatened to have her sent to San Quentin as a forger and a perjurer. This is the story of the two trials in which she and he battled it out in the state and federal courts while San Francisco's carnivorous press had a field day exposing the latest titillating revelations that came to light in the all-too-public trials. It is also the story of the fatal attraction that developed between Allie and one of her lawyers, former California Supreme Court Justice David S. Terry. This book is based upon the transcripts and evidence contained in the California state archives and federal archives, as well as contemporaneous newspaper accounts.
