Unsettled Issues on Human-Robot Collaboration and Automation in Aerospace Manufacturing
Is human-robot collaboration the future for aerospace manufacturing? It is widely acknowledged that the application of robotics and automation in aerospace manufacturing is significantly lower than might be expected given the size and value of the industry and its technologically advanced products. When deployed, it tends to be either in relatively simple activities, such as machine loading and handling, or in the form of large bespoke systems for processes such as fastening. The reason for this is multifactorial but includes product variability, size, design philosophy, and relatively low volumes. Also, there is occasional reticence due to a history of past false starts. that increase the perceived risk associated with the introduction of new technologies.Current thinking suggests that the emerging technology of human-robot collaboration provides an ideal solution, combining the flexibility and skill of human operators with the precision, repeatability, and reliability of robots. However, this is a topic that tends to generate emotional and emotive reactions within the industry ranging in extremes from a brave new and inevitable future for aircraft manufacturing and assembly, to workers living in fear of a robot invasion and lost jobs. In this SAE EDGE Research Report we seek to build a comprehensive picture of the current state-of-the-art of human-robot applications and identify key issues that unlock the technology's potential. We have sought the views of recognised thought leaders to understand and deconstruct the myths and realities of human- robot collaboration, and how it could eventually have the impact envisaged by many.NOTE: SAE EDGE(TM) Research Reports are intended to identify and illuminate key issues in emerging, but still unsettled, technologies of interest to the mobility industry. The goal of SAE EDGE(TM) Research Reports is to stimulate discussion and work in the hope of promoting and speeding resolution of identified issues. SAE EDGE(TM) Research Reports are not intended to resolve the challenges they identify or close any topic to further scrutiny.
Female Circumcision and Clitoridectomy in the United States

Female Circumcision and Clitoridectomy in the United States

An engaging and surprising history of surgeries on the clitoris, revealing what the therapeutic use of female circumcision and clitoridectomy tells us about American medical ideas concerning the female body and female sexuality. From the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century, American physicians treated women and girls for masturbation by removing the clitoris (clitoridectomy) or clitoral hood (female circumcision). During this same time, and continuing to today, physicians also performed female circumcision to enable women to reach orgasm. Though used as treatment, paradoxically, for both a perceived excessive sexuality and a perceived lack of sexual responsiveness, these surgeries reflect a consistent medical conception of the clitoris as a sexual organ. In recent years the popular media and academics have commented on the rising popularity in the United States of female genital cosmetic surgeries, including female circumcision, yet these discussions often assume such procedures are new. In Female Circumcision and Clitoridectomy in the United States: A History of a Medical Treatment, Sarah Rodriguez presents an engaging and surprising history of surgeries on the clitoris, revealing how medical views of the female body and female sexuality have changed -- and in some cases not changed -- throughout the last century and a half. Sarah B. Rodriguez is lecturer in medical humanities and bioethics and in global health studies at Northwestern University.

The Little Book of Cosmic Catastrophes (That Could End the World)
Explore all the possible ways that the world can end, astrophysically speaking. What, in the end, will signal the end of the world? It’s the question we all ponder, but what could actually happen? Our Earth is our tiny little haven in this chaotic universe, and it’s by sheer luck we are even here at all. The Little Book of Cosmic Catastrophes (That Could End the World) will explore a full breadth of astronomical conundrums, presenting complex ideas in bitesize, easy to digest segments in three parts. Part 1 breaks down exactly what makes Earth so special, the beginning of the universe, how everything we know could not have existed at all, the fate of the world if our sun was born a twin, and how Jupiter could have gone from our friend to our foe.Part 2 gets out heart pumping, pondering all the things that could, in theory, happen anytime. From asteroid attacks and rogue blackholes to deadly gamma ray bursts and alien invasions. We get the facts, everything from how stars die to statistically predicting the existence of aliens.Part 3 covers the inevitable, what the future of the Universe will bring. From how our sun will die, to our collision course with andromeda and even the end of time. It’s not all doom and gloom though, the final chapter outlines where humans could go next, interstellar travel, and how we might locate Earth 2.0.

Caerphilly Chronicles is a Lead Creative Schools Project by a class of Year 7 learners from St. Cenydd Community School. The project was devised and created by Creative Practitioners Tracey Moberly, Sara Sylvester and Head of Geography Nicola Webber working with Arts Council of Wales. The select group of learners explored medieval settlements, studied Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, stories from the Mabinogion and other fables. From this they created their own poetry, constructed mythical creatures and chronicled individual stories based on their environs, focusing on the landmark Caerphilly Castle at the heart of their town and community. The project culminated in a pilgrimage with an offering of daffodils to Caerphilly Castle, which was documented on film and photography by the learners and creative practitioners.
