Economic nationalizing in the ethnic borderlands of Hungary and Romania : inclusion, exclusion and annihilation in Szatmár/Satu-Mare 1867-1944

The history of the ethnic borderlands of Hungary and Romania in the years 1867–1944 was marked by changing national borders, ethnic conflicts and economic problems. Using a local case study of the city and county of Szatmár/Satu-Mare, this thesis investigates the practice and social mechanisms of economic nationalizing. It explores the interplay between ethno-national and economic factors, and furthermore analyses what social mechanisms lead to and explain inclusion, exclusion and annihilation. The empirical results show that citizenship in both countries was separated in an ethnically hierarchical way, making minorities secondclass citizens. This process of ethnic, and finally racial, exclusion marked the whole period, culminating in the annihilation of Jews throughout most of Hungary in 1944. The overall thesis is that economic nationalizing through the exclusion of minorities induces vicious circles of ethnic bifurcation, political instability and unfavorable conditions for achieving economic prosperity. Exclusion served the elite’s short-term interest but undermined the nation’s long-term ability to prosper.
Gender, Violence and Attitudes explores the history of gender-based violence in early modern Europe, particularly intimate-partner violence and sexual violence. It also investigates the legacy of gender-based violence through the Enlightenment to the present day and offers a historical background to highly topical human rights issues. Although the individual subjects of gender and the history of violence are not new topics, the gendering of violence has received little examination. Within this book, the history of attitudes and practices related to gender and power are analysed, and the nature of violence, justice and societal considerations of gender are explored as cultural constructs: they have the capacity to change over time, although there also is a tendency for continuity. The study is based on a wide range of sources including marriage guides, poems, plays, legal texts and court records exploring deep-rooted violence phenomena in Sweden (including historical Finland), the German territories, England and, to some extent, France.Offering a detailed analysis of gender and the culture of violence, Gender, Violence and Attitudes is essential reading for students and general readers who wish to understand the history of violence and its continual association with gender from early modern Europe to the present day.

The book is most beneficial to current and future instructors of college courses, especially those wanting to use more active learning pedagogies. It will also benefit university administrators and staff by identifying campus priorities, culture, and structure that support the effective implementation of HIPs. It makes the case for a campus-wide adoption of high-impact practices, across disciplines and in both academic and co-curricular life.
