An extract: My high school career counselor was this florid-faced, overweight man who told me my problem was I was too linear in my thinking. Life, he said, doesn't always go straight from A to B. I needed to loosen up, he said; I should try some different avenues of expression. To someone who's sixteen, that didn't mean a helluva lot, except that maybe I should try a different road when driving home. It was years before I figured out he was making a pass at me.By contrast, my now-very-much ex-husband Steve was the tan, trim, quintessential gay man who once told me that sex between us felt like an agreeable mixture of Candyland and Monopoly. That didn't mean too much either, but it sure felt like a step in the right direction. And I always knew when he was making a pass.Oh, Steven...I really needed you last night.I mean, I'm writing today for the first time since... well, you know - and it was always easier facing these mini-marathons after waking up next to you.Well, not much to be done about that now, is there? I can't exactly call you up and ask you to come home. Be a bit difficult, eh? And the long-distance charges would be murder.I know, I know: bad joke.

As arguably the most influential voice in American Catholicism, the vision that Scott Hahn offers in his works, read by millions of Catholics throughout the world, is one of the most formative in American Catholicism. His numerous books and public speaking engagements are shaping the American Catholic Church in a uniquely powerful manner. This work demonstrates that the Catholic vision that Hahn claims to be providing his audience is, in fact, always quite different from the one he actually presents. What he coins as Catholic faithfulness is instead a straightforward and damning Catholic fundamentalism. As this vision is delivered to millions of the faithful who look to Hahn as a trustworthy guide to an authentic life of Catholic faith, American Pope acts as a critical analysis of his work.

A collection of short stories, based on writings about the Aristophanes family and their various friends and relations, at PanHistoria. A ghost story or two, a visit to Atlantis, a night of abandon with Boetian eels, a government trying to suppress artistic freedom... these are all just another day at the office for Athens' most unusual neighbourhood. Slightly anachronistic, slightly fantastical, but always surprising, DAEDALIDAI takes everything you ever knew about Greek history and turns it ever so slightly on its ear.

Gnosticism - derived from the Greek word gnosis, to know - is the name given to various religious schools that proliferated in the first centuries after Christ and, at one time, almost became the dominant form of Christianity. Yet some Gnostic beliefs derive from the older Mystery traditions of Greece and Rome, and the various Gnostic schools came to be branded as heretical by the emerging Christian church. Indeed, although some Gnostic beliefs are close to mainstream Christianity, Gnosticism also held that the world is imperfect as it was created by an evil god who was constantly at war with the true, good God; that Christ and Satan were brothers; that reincarnation exists; and that women were the equals of men As a result, the Gnostics held the Feminine Aspect of God - whom they addressed as Sophia, or Wisdom - in very high regard. They also stressed that we each have a spark of the Divine inside us which, when recognised and developed, will ultimately liberate us from the prison of the material world. Although largely stamped out by the Church by the sixth century, Gnosticism survived underground through groups such as the Bogomils and the Cathars, and influenced the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the psychologist Carl Jung, the Existentialists, the New Age movement and writers as diverse as William Blake, W.B. Yeats, Albert Camus and Philip K. Dick. In this book, Sean Martin recounts the long and diverse history of Gnosticism, and argues for its continued relevance today.

When Sean became James tells the story of the making of Dr No and of the unique and very different groups of men who came together to accidentally create one of the most influential films of all time. In October 1962 a small budget British film premiered in Leicester Square, London. It got mixed reviews from the press and even its creators were unimpressed by their product. The original author of the story hated it, while the producers were mystified by the laughter from the test screenings. They had set out to create a sexy, stylish thriller. Had they accidentally made a comedy? The US film backers were already ruing the money they wasted on this ‘Limey spy thriller’. Their leading man, a former milkman from Edinburgh whose life is far removed from the suave, sophisticated character on screen, was regretting ever getting involved in the project. His director, who figured the actor was miscast, thinks it’s just another B-movie, soon to be forgotten. Yet somehow their modest little film, Dr No, will launch the world’s longest running, and most lucrative film franchise and transform its lead actor into one of the world’s most iconic and enduring screen stars. It is a film whose style, energy, radical approach to editing and its wisecracking sex and violence would transform a whole genre of film and influence generations of movie makers. As Barbara Broccoli, the daughter of Cubby, and producer of the current Bond franchise recalled. ‘The original filmmakers were Cubby and Harry, Ian Fleming, Terence Young and Sean Connery. They all created something extraordinary. They changed cinema history. They pushed the envelope.’
