Executing God

Executing God

Sharon L. Baker

Westminster/John Knox Press,U.S.
2013
nidottu
Why did God have to murder his only son to pay our debts? What kind of vengeful, violent God can only be satisfied by vicarious blood atonement? In Executing God, theologian Sharon Baker presents a biblically based and theologically sound critique of popular theories of the atonement. Concerned about the number of acts of violence performed in the name of God, Baker challenges cultural assumptions about the death of Jesus and its meaning to Christians. She ultimately offers a constructive alternate view of atonement based on God's forgiveness that opens up salvation to a wider group of people.

"The authors pull off an impressive double. They synthesize an enormous amount of relevant research on learning and development while also making clear the connections this research has for practice. Written in a helpful and accessible style, and full of case studies, applications, instruments, and vignettes of practice, the book will be an invaluable resource for college teachers at any level."--Stephen Brookfield, Distinguished Professor, University of St. Thomas "Effectively integrating the perspectives of a director of a university learning assistance center and a scholar in the area of developmental education, Silverman and Casazza have written an important book. It should be read by anyone concerned with the academic success of the increasingly diverse population of undergraduates in colleges and universities."--Ernest Pascarella, Petersen Professor of Higher Education, University of Iowa Comprehensive yet easy to follow, Learning and Development is designed to help faculty, student affairs professionals, and other educators understand how students learn and what they can do to foster student achievement. Sharon Silverman and Martha Casazza reveal how diverse developmental needs--such as lack of self-esteem or cultural alienation--can be at the root of a student's learning difficulties. They draw from the latest theory and research to explore the critical connection between learning and development in six key areas: (1) self and identity; (2) motivation; (3) interaction with the environment; (4) ways of knowing; (5) learning styles and preferences; and (6) self-regulation and goal setting. The authors also present six case studies to show how educators can assess and resolve learning problems while enriching and advancing their own teaching expertise. Written in clear, nontechnical language, Learning and Development provides useful, systematic approaches for making connections between teaching and learning.

This is the first book to examine the changing roles of women in Japan during the four decades following the Meiji Restoration of 1868, a period of sweeping political, social, and economic change. The book concentrates on those Japanese women who were outspoken critics of their society and the roles women were assigned in it, but also assesses the contributions women made to Japan during a period of rapid modernization. The struggle of Japanese women to gain political rights, the creation of a women's reform movement, the involvement of women in the early socialistic movement, the protests of women textile workers who staged Japan's first strikes, the evolution of the women's movement into a literary movement, and a new view of Kanno Suga, an anarchist who was hanged by the Japanese government in 1911, are presented against the background of determined state intervention in the lives of women. The book concludes with a brief summary of the changing role of women in Japan since Meiji, and compares their experience with that of European and American women.

America's Teenagers--Myths and Realities

Sharon L. Nichols; Thomas L. Good

2004

The media's presentation suggests that American teenage culture today is the most violent, sexual, and amoral youth culture in history. In this book, Nichols and Good deconstruct the negative images held by large numbers of adults. Recognizing that many teenagers are left by adults to socialize themselves and the consequences of this "careless indifference," the authors' goal is to influence a more positive view leading to stronger social policies and better services, resources, and programs to meet the needs of America's youth. Unique features of America's Teenagers--Myths and Realities: Media Images, Schooling, and the Social Costs of Careless Indifference include:*powerful analytic lenses used to revisit typical depictions of youth;*a wealth of information brought to bear on understanding teenagers' behavior; and*consideration of a broad range of adolescent behaviors across critical socializing settings. The book begins with a discussion of the continuing myth of adolescence--how and why youth are devalued, and an overview of current beliefs about youth drawn from two 1990s Public Agenda Polls. This is followed by chapters on youth and the media, and the pressures that youth face in various dimensions of their lives. Topics include youth violence; the sex lives of teenagers; tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and teens; healthy living and decision making; working teens; and youth and education. The concluding chapter pulls together themes generated throughout the book and provides examples of policies that would underscore the value of viewing youth as a social investment. General guidelines are provided for teachers, parents, policymakers, and citizens to facilitate responding to youth in meaningful, proactive ways that improve the quality of life for teenagers and the broader society.
