Learning to Love Yourself: Finding Your Self-Worth

We all come into this world full of promise and possibility. For some, when born into a healthy and highly functional family, the journey is quite easy, with guideposts and directions given freely. However, that is a very small population of people. Most of us were born into families that were in their own way struggling for independence, accomplishment, safety or security. For the millions of people who grew up in painful families, whether by absent parents, abusive parents, or those who were ill-equipped, noted therapist Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse shows that they do not have to follow a family tradition of compulsion or addiction. In the revised edition of the classic Learning to Love Yourself, Wegscheider-Cruse explains that it is possible to create our own self-worth at any time in our lives, even as adults. She guides readers on a journey to greater self-worth, explaining how to eliminate toxic self-defeating messages, how to choose healthier, new perspectives, and how to reinvent yourself each day open to a world of possibilities.

In colonial America, the system of "warning out" was distinctive to New England, a way for a community to regulate those to whom it would extend welfare. Robert Love's Warnings animates this nearly forgotten aspect of colonial life, richly detailing the moral and legal basis of the practice and the religious and humanistic vision of those who enforced it. Historians Cornelia H. Dayton and Sharon V. Salinger follow one otherwise obscure town clerk, Robert Love, as he walked through Boston's streets to tell sojourners, "in His Majesty's Name," that they were warned to depart the town in fourteen days. This declaration meant not that newcomers literally had to leave, but that they could not claim legal settlement or rely on town poor relief. Warned youths and adults could reside, work, marry, or buy a house in the city. If they became needy, their relief was paid for by the province treasurer. Warning thus functioned as a registration system, encouraging the flow of labor and protecting town coffers. Between 1765 and 1774, Robert Love warned four thousand itinerants, including youthful migrant workers, demobilized British soldiers, recently exiled Acadians, and women following the redcoats who occupied Boston in 1768. Appointed warner at age sixty-eight owing to his unusual capacity for remembering faces, Love kept meticulous records of the sojourners he spoke to, including where they lodged and whether they were lame, ragged, drunk, impudent, homeless, or begging. Through these documents, Dayton and Salinger reconstruct the biographies of travelers, exploring why so many people were on the move throughout the British Atlantic and why they came to Boston. With a fresh interpretation of the role that warning played in Boston's civic structure and street life, Robert Love's Warnings reveals the complex legal, social, and political landscape of New England in the decade before the Revolution.

Love on the Streets is a selection from two of Doubiago's book-length poems, Hard Country and South America Mi Hija and from the collections Psyche Drives the Coast and Body and Soul, plus new poems. Hard Country takes place in 1976, on a journey across the U.S. with a lover, climaxing on the lake where his mother drowned herself when he was ten. South America Mi Hija is a journey the poet made with her 15 year-old daughter to Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Psyche Drives the Coast are poems written while Doubiago lived mainly on the road, and in diverse, passionate communities of poets from Mendocino to the Canadian border. Body and Soul was written while she was a resident of Oregon, and the new poems are written from her present home in San Francisco.

Ebony King thought surviving heartbreak and toxic love was the hardest battle she'd face-until lies, jealousy, and hidden enemies threaten her future all over again. Fresh off the emotional rollercoaster of her past, Ebony is now trying to focus on law school and rebuilding her life. But peace doesn't last long. Her ex's mother has joined forces with a bitter group of "mean girls," including her current boyfriend's ex, to drag Ebony and her closest friends into a scandal big enough to ruin them. Facing possible arrest and public humiliation, Ebony must rely on her tight circle-an FBI-connected friend, a judge, a lawyer, and her own growing legal skills-to fight back and clear her name. But the threats keep coming. Just when she thinks she can breathe, Ebony finds herself stalked again-only this time, her former stalker has changed. Out of jail and free from his manipulative mother's influence, he's a different man. Or is he? With danger, doubt, and old feelings swirling, Ebony takes a Christmas trip home to reset-but instead of peace, she's followed by killers who believe she holds information that could expose powerful government figures. Forced into hiding, she turns to an old friend for protection-someone who knows her heart better than she's willing to admit. As her safety, sanity, and love life spin out of control, Ebony faces the biggest question yet: Who does her heart truly belong to-and can she survive long enough to find out?
