Shawnee has a strong sense of place, owing to a rich history dating back to 1895. Featuring a revitalized pre-statehood Main Street, mid-century Bell Avenue Historic District, and a surrounding historic downtown and beyond, Shawnee has that perfect mix of small-town charm and urban conveniences. This book focuses on the city's historic buildings and places--some saved and others lost.

Restless pioneers surrounded the border of what would become Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, on September 22, 1891, with the goal of staking prime land. The crowd was diverse and not always well-behaved, but chaos eventually turned to order. Businesses opened quickly, and towns were established. Tecumseh would be designated the county seat, but it would not be long before Shawnee would steal it away and even have aspirations of becoming the state capital. Shawnee and Tecumseh would become the focus of the county, but other towns like Asher, Dale, Earlsboro, Macomb, Maud, McLoud, St. Louis, and Wanette persevered in their own ways, bringing a unique version of small-town charm. Pottawatomie County today is home to just over 70,000 citizens. Shawnee, still the county seat, boasts a prestigious college and university and is known as the birthplace of Sonic Drive-In. Sixteen sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places are in the county. Jim Thorpe, Gordon Cooper Jr., Wanda Jackson, and Brad Pitt have all called Pottawatomie County home.

They say revenge is a dish best served cold.... They better be right.Sixteen-year-old Lon Pearce is an orphan who has lost both his parents separately at the hands of the same man, local business owner Carl Teverence. Grief-stricken by their murders, he heads into town, half-cocked and ready to take his vengeance... only things don't quite turn out the way he'd hoped. Teverence and his men see him coming a mile away. They turn the tables on him with ease, and Lon is lucky to escape with his life. Alone and hunted, Lon is forced to leave everything he knows and loves behind, even his name. Now known only as Shawnee, he journeys west across the plains on a long and lonely trail. He hasn't forgotten the score he has to settle, but he needs to learn the skills to make it possible. He lends a hand to those he finds in need along the way-even when it forces him further outside the law. Will Shawnee find his way back home to deliver the justice he so desperately desires? Will he have learned enough to defeat Teverence and his men, or will he wind up in a shallow grave next to his parents? And even if he is successful, will he have enough integrity-enough of his soul remaining-to think of himself as a good man? An action-filled adventure of loss and revenge, Bob Giel's Shawnee will have you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.

The Shawnee Prophet

The Shawnee Prophet

In the early 1800s, when control of the Old Northwest had not yet been assured to the United States, the Shawnee leaders Tecumseh and his brother Tenskwatawa, the Shawnee Prophet, led an intertribal movement culminating at the Battle of Tippecanoe and the Battle of the Thames. Historians have portrayed Tecumseh, the war leader, as the key figure in forging the intertribal confederacy. In this full-length biography of Tenskwatawa, R. David Edmunds shows that, to the contrary, the Shawnee Prophet initiated and for much of the period dominated the movement, providing a set of religious beliefs and ceremonies that revived the tribes' fading power and cohesion.

The result of years of painstaking research, this outstanding compilation reflects the wealth of material available on the Shawnee, from contact through the 20th century. The historical introduction provides a succinct but comprehensive narrative of Shawnee history. The bibliography itself is arranged in three broad subject areas. The first covers general history and affairs, anthropology, and linguistics; the second moves through history with the Shawnee, providing easy access to materials that document and analyze each period of their history; and the third references a plethora of primary documents-judicial, administrative, and Congressional material not generally found in existing guides. This latter section lends a particular strength to the work with its annotations of the Annual Reports of the Commissioners of Indian Affairs, which give unparalleled views of Shawnee life in the 19th century. Although intended primarily as a guide to the literature, the entries are generous in scope and description and often contain quotations from the primary sources. Intended for historians, anthropologists, researchers, and students, both graduate and undergraduate.
Kanthia Shawnta Lewis - SheEO Chronicles
The year 2020 was an interesting year to say the least... Although the world was in an abyss of "the unknown" around us, there were some amazing shifts and transformations taking place within us. We were given vision and insight as to who we were "truly" designed to be and seek to become... PURPOSE We experienced breakthroughs and revelations about ourselves we didn't know existed... truths we continue to walk in today. For some "the year" 2020 was a horrific year; however, there were those of us who received the revelation of 20/20 vision. From the revelation we were able persevere and turn the potential negative outcome into and of the best years of our lives.
