The Medieval Invention of Travel

The Medieval Invention of Travel

Shayne Aaron Legassie

University of Chicago Press
2017
nidottu
Over the course of the Middle Ages, the economies of Europe, Asia, and northern Africa became more closely integrated, fostering the international and intercontinental journeys of merchants, pilgrims, diplomats, missionaries, and adventurers. During a time in history when travel was often difficult, expensive, and fraught with danger, these wayfarers composed accounts of their experiences in unprecedented numbers and transformed traditional conceptions of human mobility. Exploring this phenomenon, The Medieval Invention of Travel draws on an impressive array of sources to develop original readings of canonical figures such as Marco Polo, John Mandeville, and Petrarch, as well as a host of lesser-known travel writers. As Shayne Aaron Legassie demonstrates, the Middle Ages inherited a Greco-Roman model of heroic travel, which viewed the ideal journey as a triumph over temptation and bodily travail. Medieval travel writers revolutionized this ancient paradigm by incorporating practices of reading and writing into the ascetic regime of the heroic voyager, fashioning a bold new conception of travel that would endure into modern times. Engaging methods and insights from a range of disciplines, The Medieval Invention of Travel offers a comprehensive account of how medieval travel writers and their audiences reshaped the intellectual and material culture of Europe for centuries to come.

An in-depth guide to making gold a serious part of your portfolio Gold, the long forgotten store of value that was once the center of the global financial system, suddenly matters a great deal again. It has become a leading asset by virtue of its strong performance, and its booming demand has made it the only financial asset that remains in an uninterrupted bull market. And yet gold remains one of the least-owned financial assets in investment portfolios today. Hard Money helps investors move beyond the simple, yet widely accepted notion that gold makes sense in today's financial environment, and explores ways to magnify potential investment returns driven by precious metals. This reliable resource examines the investment vehicles (bullion, stocks, derivatives, and even rare coins) and strategies (aggressive, conservative, passive, and variations) aimed at beating the price of gold as it rises, and ways to protect a portfolio should the metal decline. Identifies five key drivers that should continue to push gold higher in the years aheadExplores the ins and outs of investing in gold and making this precious metal a part of your portfolioExamines the pros and cons of multiple ways to buy gold via coins, ETFs, mining and royalty stocks, and other investment vehiclesAuthor Shayne McGuire is a highly-regarded expert on gold Written in a straightforward and accessible style, Hard Money offers key strategies to enhancing returns with new methods for investing in gold.

"Fletcher and Gardner have created a comprehensive resource that will be of interest not only to those working in the field of finance, but also to those using numerical methods in other fields such as engineering, physics, and actuarial mathematics. By showing how to combine the high-level elegance, accessibility, and flexibility of Python, with the low-level computational efficiency of C++, in the context of interesting financial modeling problems, they have provided an implementation template which will be useful to others seeking to jointly optimize the use of computational and human resources. They document all the necessary technical details required in order to make external numerical libraries available from within Python, and they contribute a useful library of their own, which will significantly reduce the start-up costs involved in building financial models. This book is a must read for all those with a need to apply numerical methods in the valuation of financial claims." –David Louton, Professor of Finance, Bryant University This book is directed at both industry practitioners and students interested in designing a pricing and risk management framework for financial derivatives using the Python programming language. It is a practical book complete with working, tested code that guides the reader through the process of building a flexible, extensible pricing framework in Python. The pricing frameworks' loosely coupled fundamental components have been designed to facilitate the quick development of new models. Concrete applications to real-world pricing problems are also provided. Topics are introduced gradually, each building on the last. They include basic mathematical algorithms, common algorithms from numerical analysis, trade, market and event data model representations, lattice and simulation based pricing, and model development. The mathematics presented is kept simple and to the point. The book also provides a host of information on practical technical topics such as C++/Python hybrid development (embedding and extending) and techniques for integrating Python based programs with Microsoft Excel.

The history of the First Tasmanians is a story of ingenuity, adaptation and resilience. In First Tasmanians historian Shayne Breen traces the 40,000 years of Aboriginal exploration, land settlement, hunting practices and controlled burning on the island. The First Tasmanians were committed to the terms of life set down by creation ancestors, their hunting and gathering skills a source of wonder to observant colonists. These skilled practitioners of land management universally respected local autonomy, and their seasonal journeys enhanced social interaction as they negotiated momentous changes in climate, vegetation and topography. Social cohesion was fostered through singing, dancing and storytelling around the evening campfire, and rituals and networks were maintained across life on earth and the afterlife. In thirty short years of the nineteenth century, this carefully nurtured collective life was destroyed by an imperial power, to be replaced by a narrative of Aboriginal resistance, struggle and protest. Multiple genocidal policies left contemporary First Tasmanians with a complex legacy of historical grief, chronic disadvantage and intergenerational trauma, a legacy that endures to this day. First Tasmanians is the first interdisciplinary account of Tasmanian Aboriginal history told in three movements: the deep hunter-gatherer past; the collective life at the time of the British invasion; and the recent past. It is a story of courage, continuity and an unwavering commitment to revitalising connections between country, culture and community.

Shayne's diagnosis of Apert Syndrome (Acrocephalysyndactyly) is typically characterized by hand and feet webbing and fusing, misshapen cranial bones, progressive immobility of joints, and cervical spine, cognitive issues associated with CNS malformations, jaw malformations and dental malocclusion, and eye, ear, and nose concerns. The incidence is rare, occurring in only 1 in about 2 million births. Shayne has faced life-long issues with expected ear, nose, muscle and joint, eye, and other concerns. Clearly, one might anticipate some possible limitations and significant challenges in physical function and social, emotional, behavioral, and educational achievement. Well, don't apply the words "possible limitations" with Shayne Those words are simply not in his vocabulary. Shayne graduated from high school, college, and university with a major in radio and TV and went on to more technical training and career in wastewater management. Moreover, Shayne pursued physical challenges of road cycling and has been a consistent award winner in competitions around the country. He continues to participate in the rigorous training required and success in cycling competitions Additionally, over the years, Shayne has shared his life experiences and has challenged and inspired others with Apert Syndrome and similar conditions which are associated with physical and emotional challenges. The diagnosis of Apert simply did not define Shayne Stillar He was not an Apert patient, but rather a person with a diagnosis of a condition called Apert. And he has demonstrated so convincingly how to rise above the challenges, explore the possibilities, seek out opportunities, and with resolve and fortitude, identify purpose and take charge of his own life journey and destination. Now, Shayne has prepared this book with the aim and desire to share his experiences, challenges, and opportunities, and to challenge others to reach high and to achieve their potential. To quote Shayne: "I just want to help people "Karlind T. My top picks were usually urban fantasy, paranormal best sellers, and of course, books featuring your classic gritty, pulp-fiction heroes. Basically, anything with a lot of creepy crawly supernatural characters: mythical creatures, ancient heroes, super villains, and gods. You will find that my stories focus on the ancient myths, characters, and stories we all know, fear, and love. Then twist them up and toss them back like an empty beer can.Q: What order should I read the books in?A: I've written the series with the intent that they should be read in order to get the full effect of the bigger picture; however the stories can be read in any order if you are looking for a quick, fast-paced romp through Adrenaline-ville. I suggest the following sequence: Obsidian SonBlood DebtsFairy Tale - Prequel (FREE to email subscribers)GrimmSilver TongueQ: So, why should readers give these books a try?A: Because the Nate Temple series is a present day thrill-ride that takes no prisoners. An Introduction to Finite Tight Frames

An Introduction to Finite Tight Frames

Shayne F. D. Waldron

Birkhauser Boston Inc
2018
sidottu
This textbook is an introduction to the theory and applications of finite tight frames, an area that has developed rapidly in the last decade. Stimulating much of this growth are the applications of finite frames to diverse fields such as signal processing, quantum information theory, multivariate orthogonal polynomials, and remote sensing. The first book entirely devoted to finite frames, it features extensive exercises and MATLAB examples for classroom use, important examples, and numerous illustrations. The book provides an overview of the field of finite tight frames and discusses future research directions in the field. The book is well suited as a textbook for a graduate course or seminar involving finite frames. The self-contained, user-friendly presentation also makes the work useful as a self-study resource or reference for graduate students, instructors, researchers, and practitioners in pure and applied mathematics, engineering, mathematical physics, and signal processing.
Family Matters in Indian Buddhist Monasticisms

Family Matters in Indian Buddhist Monasticisms

Shayne Clarke

University of Hawai'i Press

Scholarly and popular consensus has painted a picture of Indian Buddhist monasticism in which monks and nuns severed all ties with their families when they left home for the religious life. In this view, monks and nuns remained celibate, and those who faltered in their “vows” of monastic celibacy were immediately and irrevocably expelled from the Buddhist Order. This romanticized image is based largely on the ascetic rhetoric of texts such as the Rhinoceros Horn Sutra.Through a study of Indian Buddhist law codes (vinaya), Shayne Clarke dehorns the rhinoceros, revealing that in their own legal narratives, far from renouncing familial ties, Indian Buddhist writers take for granted the fact that monks and nuns would remain in contact with their families. Surveying the still largely uncharted terrain of Indian Buddhist monastic law codes preserved in Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Chinese, Clarke provides a comprehensive, pan-Indian picture of Buddhist monastic attitudes toward family. Whereas scholars have often assumed that monastic Buddhism must be anti-familial, he demonstrates that these assumptions were clearly not shared by the authors/redactors of Indian Buddhist monastic law codes.Shayne Clarke provides a basis to rethink later forms of Buddhist monasticism such as those found in Central Asia, Ka?m?r, Nepal, and Tibet not in terms of corruption and decline but of continuity and development of a monastic or renunciant ideal that we have yet to understand fully.
