A dynamic, bold, exploration of the breadth of the Kuba design aesthetic and its lasting impact on early twentieth-century modernism through to the present day. The textiles of the historic, multi-ethnic Kuba kingdom, (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), represent the most intact and cohesive tradition in the region, and are exceptional for their artistic caliber, graphic sophistication, and complexity of style. The written story of Kuba cloth begins with encounters in the early sixteenth century between the coastal Congo kingdoms and European explorers who were impressed by the elegance and intricacy of Congo weaving. In the early twentieth century the Kuba improvisational abstract aesthetic captivated the Western avant-garde, influencing fashion, fabric design, and the decorative arts. In addition to presenting full colour plates of up to fifty pieces, Designing Dynamism features illustrations of modern European textiles, contemporary woven Wesley Mancini fabrics and an illustrated introduction to Kuba textiles. The volume also includes an essay on Kuba design and its influence on modern and contemporary designers, and an essay by the only African American to have won the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award in Product Design. A brief illustrated section focuses on the embroidery techniques of prestige cloths. AUTHORS: Vanessa Drake Moraga is an independent researcher, curator and writer specializing in the textile arts. Annie Carlano is senior Curator of Craft, Design & Fashion at The Mint Museum, NC. Stephen Burks is an award-winning designer and a professor of architecture at Columbia University. Joel Smeltzer is the head of School and Gallery Programs at The Mint Museum, NC. SELLING POINTS: . After his wife's sudden death, Nick Close has decided to leave London and return to Australia, hoping that distance will bring oblivion. But Tallong, his run-down childhood home, doesn't hold much comfort either: Thirty years ago, he and his best friend Tristram were lured into the woods at the edge of town. Tristram was murdered while Nick escaped. As Nick drives the back road home from the airport, he is disturbed to find the woods still looming darkly in the distance. A strange sense of menace and foreboding overshadows his homecoming and Nick's uneasiness grows when another child is found murdered a few days later, his death almost identical to Tristram's. Probing quietly and carefully into the shadows of the small community, Nick uncovers a long string of unexplained disappearances and brutal deaths, some over 100 years old - and every killing seems to lead back into the twisted maze of the woods. But there is one other connection. Drawn into the woods once again, Nick suddenly realises that it wasn't Tristram who was meant to die thirty years ago...
Sometimes it feels like our quiet whispered prayers cannot possibly be heard by God-or that our circumstances are simply too overwhelming to handle. Growing up in a war-torn country like Liberia during the reign of the infamous warlord, Charles Taylor, made this feeling all too familiar. Taylor was indeed evil, as many have heard, but God guided us through that terrible situation, even though it wasn't always easy. There were times when it was necessary to sleep in one home only to move again soon after, taking longer routes to avoid dangerous situations. These experiences were almost enough to make one give up.It's a relief to reflect on not giving up. In the midst of difficulty, thoughts of doubt, fear, and questioning God often arise from the deepest corners of our minds. It's comforting to know that such feelings are shared by many, and we're not alone in our struggles. This brings to mind an incredibly old story from the very beginning of the Bible, in the book of Genesis, about Abraham and Sarah. Abraham received a promise from God- a promise of a son and a nation of people that would come forth from that son.

Eight months after his own brush with death over Alberta's Cardinal Divide, Cole Blackwater has learned that his good friend and former client Archie Ravenwing is presumed dead on the waters of British Columbia's Broughton Archipelago. Days before his disappearance, Ravenwing was on the brink of unravelling a corporate conspiracy surrounding an outbreak of sea lice that could decimate wild salmon along the BC coastline. While Cole and newspaper reporter Nancy Webber search for answers, Cole is haunted by the dark secret surrounding his own father's mysterious death. For Nancy Webber, whose long-forgotten feelings for Cole have risen to the surface again, getting to the bottom of Cole's family history becomes both a professional and personal obsession. "The Darkening Archipelago", the second book of the "Cole Blackwater" series, is a race to keep both human souls and wild ecosystems from falling into darkness.
'You like it darker? Fine, so do I', writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life - both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to read. King writes to feel 'the exhilaration of leaving ordinary day-to-day life behind', and in You Like it Darker, readers will feel that exhilaration too, again and again. 'Two Talented Bastids' explores the long-hidden secret of how the eponymous gentlemen got their skills. In 'Danny Coughlin's Bad Dream', a brief and unprecedented psychic flash upends dozens of lives, Danny's most catastrophically. In 'Rattlesnakes', a sequel to Cujo, a grieving widower travels to Florida for respite and instead receives an unexpected inheritance - with major strings attached. In 'The Dreamers', a taciturn Vietnam vet answers a job ad and learns that there are some corners of the universe best left unexplored. 'The Answer Man' asks if prescience is good luck or bad and reminds us that a life marked by unbearable tragedy can still be meaningful. King's ability to surprise, amaze, and bring us both terror and solace remains unsurpassed. Each of these stories holds its own thrills, joys, and mysteries; each feels iconic. You like it darker? You got it.'As classic as King's novels are, his shorter fiction has been just as gripping over the years' - USA Today 'One of the great storytellers of our time' - Guardian
