Encountering the God of Love

Encountering the God of Love

Christians have a long history of believing that the God of the Old Testament is a different, less loving God than the God of the New Testament. Old Testament professors and scholars have come together to paint a different portrait of our changeless Creator-one that shows God's immutable nature of love and compassion demonstrated in every major section of the Old Testament scriptures. From the Pentateuch to the Prophets, Encountering the God of Love offers new perspectives on old scriptures to prove that God was, is, and will always be a God of love. Each contributor brings a unique perspective and personal style to their exegetical methods, making it easy to read this book cover to cover or skip around nonsequentially to study your favorite passages. Use this book in classrooms or small groups to get the most out of the discussion questions provided at the end of every chapter. The authors have also included end-of-chapter bibliographies for readers who wish to explore these passages and the Old Testament God of love even more thoroughly.

This honest, clearly written, and accessible book shows how to use Family Dialogue Journals to increase and deepen learning among students in grades K-12. Written by teachers who have been implementing and studying the use of weekly journals for several years, the book shares what they have learned and why they have found these journals to be an invaluable tool for forming effective partnerships with families. Learn from first-hand accounts how students write weekly about one big idea they have studied, and then invite a family member to participate in the discussion by asking him/her to write a response to the student’s question about the topic in the journal. Through these journal entries, students share their family knowledge with classmates while actively engaging with the curriculum. In turn, teachers extend the academic discussion by writing to each family and incorporating the family contributions into classroom lessons. Family participation in journal entries is remarkably high across ages, ethnicities, and diverse economic backgrounds.

Values Based Goal Setting: How to DREAM BIG and Live the Life You Were Meant to Live
If traditional Goal Setting exercises worked, why are we setting the same New Year's Resolutions year after year? If SMART Goals were so SMART, why haven't we achieved our goals and started living the life of our dreams? In this book, mentor, speaker, and leadership coach Stephanie Dee Smith shares the secret to moving Beyond SMART Goal Setting and on to Dream Goal Getting. She links our goals to our values, and suddenly it all becomes clear. We've been setting the wrong goals Stephanie leads you through the 5 Steps to Discovering Your Core Values and Living Your Best Life Ever. And she reassures you that it's not too late. If you think you have missed your opportunity for achieving your life's Big Dreams, she shows readers, in her slightly "in your face" motivational style, "that is where you are wrong. And if you wait long enough, you are going to be DEAD WRONG."Every one of us was created for some great purpose. At some point in our lives we have all felt that silent nudge. It starts like a quiet pull on our soul - a constant, almost sub-conscious reminder that tells us we should be doing something more with our lives. The longer we ignore it, the louder it gets.Stephanie shares a quote by Andrew Carnegie, "If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy, and inspires your hopes", reminding us that goals aren't about checking boxes on a list, they are about inspiring our hopes and dreams. Success in achieving those goals is simply a result of finding the right values-based habits and taking the necessary action steps to make them a part of your very essence. If you've seen Stephanie speak in person, you've seen her big, excited personality fill the room. In this book, she has captured that lively spirit and her famous quips jump from the page, as in "You are not a tree" and "Never fight a goat over a patch of grass". Do you agree it's time to move from Goal Setting to Goal Getting? This book is your guide for Dreaming Big and Living the Life You Were Meant to Live.
Even After Everything

Even After Everything

A gorgeous memoir that honors life's deep griefs, great joys, and unsettled in-betweens through every sacred season, assuring us that we are never alone Exquisitely told and urgently resonant, Even After Everything is a love letter to anyone who has opened their heart only to be hurt. Stephanie Duncan Smith proposes that it's not through grit or forced resilience that you will find a way forward, but through receiving the full spectrum of our lives, just as we receive the empathy of God-with-us in every moment. Duncan Smith's disorientation began when she lost her first pregnancy on the winter solstice, just as the world readied to celebrate its most historic birth on Christmas. Then a new yet uncertain pregnancy unfolded parallel to the pandemic, until nearly one year to the day of her loss, she gave birth to her daughter at the peak of mortality in their city. These contradictions compelled Duncan Smith into a desperate search for steadiness, which she found in the liturgical year as a grounding force and the promise that we are seen by God in every season. In Even After Everything, Duncan Smith traverses the church's circle of time and reorients herself and us in the sacred story told through Advent, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, and Ordinary Time. She reveals the sacred year--through its endless interplay of love, loss, risk, and resurrection--as a mirror to the human experience, an anchor for turbulent times, and a womb strong enough to encompass every human care. At its heart lives the promise of God-with-us, inviting us into the spiritual practice of taking courage in the trust that we are accompanied in everything, and love will always have the last word.
Gender and the Mexican Revolution

Women face the possibility of change and a deeply entrenched patriarchy. The state of Yucatan is commonly considered to have been a hotbed of radical feminism during the Mexican Revolution. Challenging this romanticized view, Stephanie Smith examines the revolutionary reforms designed to break women's ties to tradition and religion, as well as the ways in which women shaped these developments.Smith analyzes the various regulations introduced by Yucatan's two revolution-era governors, Salvador Alvarado and Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Like many revolutionary leaders throughout Mexico, the Yucatan policy makers professed allegiance to women's rights and socialist principles. Yet they, too, passed laws and condoned legal practices that excluded women from equal participation and reinforced their inferior status.Using court cases brought by ordinary women, including those of Mayan descent, Smith demonstrates the importance of women's agency during the Mexican Revolution. But, she says, despite the intervention of women at many levels of Yucatecan society, the rigid definition of women's social roles as strictly that of wives and mothers within the Mexican nation guaranteed that long-term, substantial gains remained out of reach for most women for years to come.

Stephanie J. Smith brings Mexican politics and art together, chronicling the turbulent relations between radical artists and the postrevolutionary Mexican state. The revolution opened space for new political ideas, but by the late 1920s many government officials argued that consolidating the nation required coercive measures toward dissenters. While artists and intellectuals, some of them professed Communists, sought free expression in matters both artistic and political, Smith reveals how they simultaneously learned the fine art of negotiation with the increasingly authoritarian government in order to secure clout and financial patronage. But the government, Smith shows, also had reason to accommodate artists, and a surprising and volatile interdependence grew between the artists and the politicians. Involving well-known artists such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and David Alfaro Siqueiros, as well as some less well known, including Tina Modotti, Leopoldo Mendez, and Aurora Reyes, politicians began to appropriate the artists' nationalistic visual images as weapons in a national propaganda war. High-stakes negotiating and co-opting took place between the two camps as they sparred over the production of generally accepted notions and representations of the revolution's legacy—and what it meant to be authentically Mexican.

This is what it is to survive. You find what floats and you hold on. Even if it is smaller than you. Holding on is all fourteen-year-old Stephanie Clare Smith can do when she's left home alone in New Orleans during the summer of 1973. As she seeks to ease her solitude through her summer school algebra class, her wandering in the city, and her friendship with a streetcar operator, adults—particularly men—fail her again and again, with devastating consequences. Dreamlike and beautifully paced, this lyrical debut memoir traces the events of one harrowing summer and its repercussions throughout Stephanie's life, including her work with families in crisis and as a caregiver for the mother who abandoned her all those years ago. Through a mosaic of trauma and transcendence, memory and metaphor, scarcity and neglect, Stephanie reveals how she built connections in and to a world that had largely left her behind. Her hard-won survival echoes that of countless other survivors whose stories are never told, and her strength stands as a testament to the power of creativity.
