America's Correctional Crisis

Stephen D. Gottfredson; Sean Mcconville

Praeger Publishers Inc
1987
sidottu
These essays treat the legal, financial, ethical, political, institutional, and social dimensions of the most important element of America's correctional crisis: prison overcrowding. The collection may become a standard work in the field, especially for those who question the feasibility and wisdom of building more prisons. The need for rational policy-making that links prison sentences with available prison space comes through clearly and forcefully. Chapters by well-known authorities describe the extent of overcrowding in prisons and jails, review current law regarding the constituitonality of overcrowded prison facilities, and summarize research on causes and consequences. . . . Highly recommended. ChoiceBecause of the recent explosion in the American prison population, which has risen more than 40 percent in just six years, overcrowding has reached crisis proportions and conditions within prisons continue to deteriorate. This book takes a close look at the policy implications of that crisis, addressing constitutional issues, economic and political questions, and a wide range of possible long- and short-term solutions. Written by some of the most experienced academics and consultants now working the field, it provides a theoretical orientation and up-to-date factual background for each of the issues and practical policy alternatives that are studied.

The Trajectory of Holocaust Memory: The Crisis of Testimony in Theory and Practice re-considers survivor testimony, moving from a subject-object reading of the past to a subject-subject encounter in the present. It explores how testimony evolves in relationship to the life of eyewitnesses across time. This book breaks new ground based on three principles. The first draws on Martin Buber’s “I-Thou” concept, transforming the object of history into an encounter between subjects. The second employs the Jungian concept of identity, whereby the individual (internal identity) and the persona (external identity) reframe testimony as an extension of the individual. They are a living subject, rather than merely a persona or narrative. The third principle draws on Daniel Kahneman’s concept of the experiencing self, which relives events as they occurred, and the remembering self, which reflects on their meaning in sum. Taken together, these principles comprise a new literacy of testimony that enables the surviving victim and the listener to enter a relationship of trust. Designed for readers of Holocaust history and literature, this book defines the modalities of memory, witness, and testimony. It shows how encountering the individual who lived through the past changes how testimony is understood, and therefore what it can come to mean.

Routledge

sidottu
The demands of today’s schools require implementing instructional, behavioral, assessment, and organizational methods that differ from those used in the past. For schools to make these changes teachers must incorporate new methods and different teaching approaches. The purpose of this book is to provide the rationale, guidelines, and evidence-based methods that educational specialists (school psychologists, school counselors, speech/language specialists, special educators, and school administrators) can use to support teachers and, thereby, school effectiveness. It doesn’t tell teachers and schools what to do. Rather it provides theoretical support and practical strategies that educational specialists and schools can use to identify, implement, adapt, and sustain effective teacher support strategies. Unique to this text is an evidence-based professional learning model that helps educational specialists determine the best way to help teachers help children.
