Creating Mexican Consumer Culture in the Age of Porfirio Díaz

Creating Mexican Consumer Culture in the Age of Porfirio Díaz

Steven B. Bunker

Winner of the 2013 Thomas McGann Award from the Rocky Mountain Council for Latin American StudiesWinner of the LASA Mexico 2013 Humanities Book AwardIn Gabriel Garci?a Ma?rquez’s novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, a character articulates the fascination goods, technology, and modernity held for many Latin Americans in the early twentieth century when he declares that “incredible things are happening in this world.” The modernity he marvels over is the new availability of cheap and useful goods. Steven Bunker’s study shows how goods and consumption embodied modernity in the time of Porfirio Di?az, how they provided proof to Mexicans that “incredible things are happening in this world.”In urban areas, and especially Mexico City, being a consumer increasingly defined what it meant to be Mexican. In an effort to reconstruct everyday life in Porfirian Mexico, Bunker surveys the institutions and discourses of consumption and explores how individuals and groups used the goods, practices, and spaces of urban consumer culture to construct meaning and identities in the rapidly evolving social and physical landscape of the capital city and beyond. Through case studies of tobacco marketing, department stores, advertising, shoplifting, and a famous jewelry robbery and homicide, he provides a colourful walking tour of daily life in Porfirian Mexico City. emphasising the widespread participation in this consumer culture, Bunker’s work overturns conventional wisdom that only the middle and upper classes participated in this culture.

This book presents a practical introduction and is a reference source for all the major complementary and alternative medicines. Complementary medical treatments are now increasingly popular and the public demand for information and treatment is growing rapidly. It is therefore essential that all pharmacists have good knowledge of the main aspects of complementary therapies as they are meeting more and more patients who want advice and treatment with alternative therapies. This book provides a practical introduction and reference source on the products most frequently requested in community pharmacies and in hospitals. Chapters on other complementary therapies such as massage are also included for information so that pharmacists can give knowledge-based advice to the public.Additionally CAM is now an integral part of every MPharm course in the UK and of the pharmacy degree course in the USA. The previous edition has been adopted by universities both in the UK and the USA. Indeed in the UK, this is an essential textbook that includes all aspects of CAM covered in the MPharm degree.
Decision of Fate: A Novel of Armoured Combat in the Great War
World War One was the first truly industrialized conflict; it sprang from the misjudgments of failing empires and engulfed a generation eager to fight for King and Country. Amid the resulting carnage, concepts of chivalry and lan were quickly overwhelmed by the effects of machineguns, aircraft, artillery and mud. But a handful of visionaries realized that to overcome the stalemate, they must break with tradition and push the boundaries of technology - and forever changed the face of war.

Assigned to U.S. Pacific Command in the wake of 9/11, Army Reserve intelligence officer Captain Chris Gates believes he has been sentenced to a backwater in the war on terrorism. But when a video tape discovered in an al Qa'ida camp in Afghanstan reveals a plot to bomb U.S. facilities in Southeast Asia, Gates is sent to work with Singapore's intelligence services to help track-down the terrorists before they can strike. Working with Captain Jessica Ling, a street-wise Singaporean intelligence officer, Gates finds himself drawn into her obsession with capturing the mysterious Jemmah Islamiya bomb-maker known only as "Khalid". Not until she is assigned as his control officer on a mission to rescue a wounded agent from Indonesia does he begin to realize that in the world of international terrorism, there are no allies, only interests...

Chinese Diasporas

Steven B. Miles

Cambridge University Press

Chinese Diasporas provides a concise and compelling new history of internal and external Chinese migration from the sixteenth century to the present day. Steven B. Miles places Chinese migrants and their families at the center of his narrative through a series of engaging case studies taking readers from the heart of Ming China to the global property markets of the twenty-first century. The focus on individual migrants and their descendants reveals the ways in which the 'Chinese diaspora' has consisted of distinct paths of migration from specific emigrant communities to targeted destinations both within China and abroad. This is essential reading for those interested in the history of the Chinese diaspora and the overseas Chinese, and for those interested in the role of migration in the making of the modern world.
The Mathematics of Signal Processing

The Mathematics of Signal Processing

Cambridge University Press
2011
pokkari
Arising from courses taught by the authors, this largely self-contained treatment is ideal for mathematicians who are interested in applications or for students from applied fields who want to understand the mathematics behind their subject. Early chapters cover Fourier analysis, functional analysis, probability and linear algebra, all of which have been chosen to prepare the reader for the applications to come. The book includes rigorous proofs of core results in compressive sensing and wavelet convergence. Fundamental is the treatment of the linear system y=Fx in both finite and infinite dimensions. There are three possibilities: the system is determined, overdetermined or underdetermined, each with different aspects. The authors assume only basic familiarity with advanced calculus, linear algebra and matrix theory and modest familiarity with signal processing, so the book is accessible to students from the advanced undergraduate level. Many exercises are also included.

All major religions in history have offered hope of some kind of afterlife to answer the perennial interest in the question of life after death. This volume brings together renowned experts in the philosophy of religion, Graham Oppy, David Apolloni, Shyam Ranganathan, Joshua Farris and Steven B. Cowan, to present four key starting points in the life after death debate.Providing a lively and collaborative dialogue between leaders in the field, each thinker defends a particular view of the afterlife and critically interacts with the alternative perspectives. They focus on the positions of No Life After Death, the Immortality of the Soul, Reincarnation and Resurrection, with each chapter drawing on views from naturalism, antiquity, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Jainism and Yogacara. This engagement moves the current debate forward to consider global perspectives whilst the clear and accessible structure allows for a developed exploration of the central issues at stake.Incorporating views spanning secular and religious spheres in both the east and west, this comprehensive guide will be welcomed by students and scholars of contemporary philosophy of religion and comparative philosophy.
Near Extensions and Alignment of Data in R(superscript)n
Near Extensions and Alignment of Data in Rn Comprehensive resource illustrating the mathematical richness of Whitney Extension Problems, enabling readers to develop new insights, tools, and mathematical techniques Near Extensions and Alignment of Data in Rn demonstrates a range of hitherto unknown connections between current research problems in engineering, mathematics, and data science, exploring the mathematical richness of near Whitney Extension Problems, and presenting a new nexus of applied, pure and computational harmonic analysis, approximation theory, data science, and real algebraic geometry. For example, the book uncovers connections between near Whitney Extension Problems and the problem of alignment of data in Euclidean space, an area of considerable interest in computer vision. Written by a highly qualified author, Near Extensions and Alignment of Data in Rn includes information on: Areas of mathematics and statistics, such as harmonic analysis, functional analysis, and approximation theory, that have driven significant advances in the fieldDevelopment of algorithms to enable the processing and analysis of huge amounts of data and data setsWhy and how the mathematical underpinning of many current data science tools needs to be better developed to be usefulNew insights, potential tools, and mathematical techniques to solve problems in Whitney extensions, signal processing, shortest paths, clustering, computer vision, optimal transport, manifold learning, minimal energy, and equidistribution Providing comprehensive coverage of several subjects, Near Extensions and Alignment of Data in Rn is an essential resource for mathematicians, applied mathematicians, and engineers working on problems related to data science, signal processing, computer vision, manifold learning, and optimal transport.
