Pocono Mountains, June, 1966Augusta McKee, amateur sleuth, professor of music, and former opera singer, is invited to perform in the musical Carousel at the Pocono Playhouse in Northeastern Pennsylvania. With the encouragement of her husband, Cincinnati P.D. Homicide Detective Malcolm Mitchell, she accepts this chance to be on a stage again, in an area where she spent happy summers as a child experiencing the beauty of the mountains and the Delaware Water Gap.Two nights after the show opens, a woman's body is found in the theater's parking lot. An old beau of Augusta's, Evan Llewellyn, who plays the male lead in the show, is the prime-in fact, the only-suspect in the murder. Because the victim was from Cincinnati, Malcolm becomes involved in the case and joins Augusta in the Poconos.Llewellyn's past as the child of coal miners in the nearby Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania emerges as an essential element in the case. While searching for clues to the murder, Augusta and Malcolm learn of past and present destruction created by mining and witness firsthand the devastation caused by the Carbondale underground mine fire.As the puzzle pieces of the case fall into place, Augusta finds herself in a harrowing, life-threatening confrontation with the killer-at a remote, long-abandoned coal mine.

In 1999, the statement "Give me the red cup" was nothing more than a teaching tool for Susan Moore Vosseler as she worked with the unique needs of persons diagnosed with autism. But since that time, the statement has taken on a whole new level of profundity for Vosseler-one that has been an incredible inspiration for both her and others. Collected here are ten brief stories from Vosseler's career in autism. From the first child she worked with to the boy who despised music, from the time she helped cook a bus to the time she moved mountains, the stories in Give Me the Red Cup are heartfelt but deliberate, as each tale highlights a specific value that Vosseler encountered. These recollections are an expression of sincere gratitude for the great lessons that each child, parent, therapist, teacher, and friend demonstrated over the course of her career. Honest and inspirational, these stories touch the heart of anyone who lives or works in the world of autism and invites all readers to know the joy in every day, in any moment. How would you teach give me the red cup? was a pivotal moment for Vosseler. This little book honors that moment by highlighting and honoring just a few more moments in the nearly twenty years since. At the end of the book, Susan Moore Vosseler invites readers to notice and collect their own joys...an on-going, living awareness of joy. Much as the moment continues for Vosseler. Joy pervades.

Youth, AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases provides a comprehensive overview of research and policy in this increasingly important area. The book describes the world-wide incidence and prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents and examines how their sexual behaviour has changed as a result of the threat of AIDS. It also looks at young people's knowledge and attitudes about their own sexual health, as well as the usefulness of models in predicting those at risk. The authors also discuss the effectiveness of institutional policies in educating young people and in preventing sexually transmitted diseases. Youth, AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases will be of considerable benefit to health care providers, sex educators and all those who work with and study adolescents.

Sexuality in Adolescence: The Digital Generation provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of research and theory about adolescent sexuality in today’s world. The book examines biological, social and health-related approaches and reviews qualitative and quantitative research from psychology, sociology, epidemiology and medicine, emphasising the interplay between perspectives and privileging the voices of young people as they discuss the joys and pains of sexual awakening. The focus is on understanding healthy sexual development and its many variations, but problems and issues arising as young people make their journey to adult sexuality are also considered. The book presents global research on many key issues of our time, including the impact of media and technology on adolescent sexuality, changes in adolescent sexual behaviors and beliefs, sexual risk taking, sex education, and teen pregnancy and abortion. This fully revised and updated third edition of Sexuality in Adolescence also addresses the crucial issues of sexual diversity, sexual safety and sexual communication, including coercion, peer pressure and double standards. In Sexuality in Adolescence: The Digital Generation, the authors aim to promote sexual wellbeing, and argue for the importance of the adolescent period as a time for engendering healthy sexual attitudes and practices. This book will be valuable reading for students in the social, behavioural and health sciences who are interested in adolescent development and the topic of sexuality, as well as for professionals working with young people and families.

As many as one in four English settlers who joined the Great Migration to New England in the 1630s went back. Why? This book uncovers what might seem to be a dark side of the American dream: the New World from the viewpoint of those who decided not to stay. At the core of the volume are the life histories of people who left New England during the British Civil Wars and Interregnum, 1640–1660. More than a third of the ministers who had stirred up emigration from England deserted their flocks to return home. The colonists’ stories challenge our perceptions of early settlement and the religious ideal of New England as a "City on a Hill." America was a stage in their journey, not an end in itself. Susan Hardman Moore first explores the motives for migration to New England in the 1630s and the rhetoric that surrounded it. Then, drawing on extensive original research into the lives of hundreds of migrants, she outlines the complex reasons that spurred many to brave the Atlantic again, homeward bound. Her book ends with the fortunes of colonists back home and looks at the impact of their American experience. Of exceptional value to studies of the connections between the Old and New Worlds, Pilgrims contributes to debates about the nature of the New England experiment and its significance for the tumults of revolutionary England.

The records of the Courts of Equity, which dealt with cases of fairness rather than law, are among the most detailed, extensive and revealing of all the legal documents historians can consult, yet they are often neglected. Susan Moore's expert introduction to them opens up this fascinating source to researchers who may not be familiar with them and dont know how to take advantage of them. As she traces the purpose, history and organization of the Courts of Equity from around 1500 to 1876, she demonstrates how varied their role was and how valuable their archives are for us today. She covers the Courts of Chancery, Exchequer, Star Chamber, Requests, Palatinates and Duchy of Lancaster in clear detail. Her work shows researchers why their records are worth searching, how to search them and how many jewels of information can be found in them. This introduction will be appreciated by local, social and family historians who are coming to these records for the first time and by those who already know of the records but have found them daunting.

In a field where primary sources are thin and difficult, Abandoning America is an excellent tool for reference and research. The book is fully annotated and offers a substantial introduction providing for further historicalcontext. CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Abandoning America brings together the biographies of hundreds of people who crossed over to New England in the 1630s but later braved the Atlantic again to return home. Some wentback quickly, disenchanted or discouraged. Many invested everything to make New England a success, yet after ten or twenty years resolved to leave America - against a backdrop of civil war and Cromwell's commonwealth in England, and personal dilemmas about family ties, health and prospects. The book retrieves their forgotten life-stories from thousands of scattered fragments of evidence in early New England records and British archives, often starting fromsome incidental, passing, reference. The result of this scholarly detective work is a remarkable and evocative collection of personal histories, of people overlooked in the onward march of American history. Their anxieties and aspirations speak eloquently about the experience of being a New Englander, for those who stayed on as well as for those who left. The book traces settlers' lives with an eye to the information historians look for. It is a richoriginal resource for scholars of early America and the English Revolution - for research on religion in England and New England, Atlantic migration, and much more. SUSAN HARDMAN MOORE is Professor of Early Modern Religion at the University of Edinburgh.
