Developing Leadership is a groundbreaking book that focuses on the lifetime development of ten strong, competent, and fascinating women governors. This one of a kind book shares the commonalities and perspectives of ten women on their own personal journeys in developing leadership throughout childhood, youth, young adulthood, and adulthood. These ten women reflect a journey shared, in part, by all leaders. Based on years of research, Developing Leadership provides a profile of each governor and then an analysis of the data gathered from extensive interviews with each of these women. It shows how they were able to develop the skills and abilities throughout their lives to become the leaders they became. If we are truly interested in figuring out how to develop strong, competent leaders for the future, then we must look at those who have succeeded in the past and those who are succeeding now. This book provides a blueprint for any woman who wants to learn to lead.

Nothing trivializes God more than a sloppy sermon or a lazy preacher. Thinking Through Writing

Thinking Through Writing

Susan R. Horton

Johns Hopkins University Press
1982
pokkari
Many writers, even experienced ones, admit that one of the most frightening objects in their world is a blank piece of paper. Susan Horton feels that too many teachers, students, and writers themselves make writing harder than it needs to be. So much emphasis is placed on form and grammar-the "rules of the game," so to speak-that the essence of the writing process, the sheer joy of saying something new, is lost. Thinking Through Writing is, in Horton's words, "a 'Back-to-Basics' book"-but one with a twist. "I'm talking about the real basics," she says. "Not grammar, but basics like what writing is and is for, how you get an idea, and how and why each idea demands its own kind of organization, and how ideas turn into essays, and, even more basic, about how your mind forms ideas in the first place. You can use this book with or without a teacher in front of you. It is put together not to tell you what to do or how to write as much as it is designed to set things up so you can discover for yourself how writing works (yours and everybody else's), and, in the process, how your mind works as well. It's a kind of 'watch yourself think' book. There aren't many answers in it, but there are lots of questions: lots of things to try to explore and discover and play with. Even more than that, this is a book that tries to teach you not just how to answer questions, but how to find questions to ask." As a writer and teacher of writing for more than a decade, Horton knows firsthand the anxieties, frustrations, challenges, and rewards that are an integral part of that exciting craft. She also has extraordinary insight into the writing process itself, and it is that insight that she attempts to communicate in Thinking Through Writing. Sharp declines in standardized composition test scores and classroom performance during the past decade have created a "literacy panic" among educators and parents alike. As a result, composition is gaining a new prominence as an academic discipline. Horton's approach to the subject, emphasizing understanding oneself and one's craft rather than fear of error, is distinctive, original, and most of all, effective. Anyone who wants to learn how to write, how to think, and how thinking and writing are related will want to read this book.
Temptations of Jesus in Mark's Gospel

Temptations of Jesus in Mark's Gospel

Susan R. Garrett

William B Eerdmans Publishing Co
1998
pokkari
This engaging study examines the considerable attention Mark's Gospel gives to Jesus' confrontation with temptation, not only during his time in the wilderness but throughout the whole course of his earthly life and ministry. Building on solid biblical exegesis and practical exposition, Garrett discusses the ancient traditions related to the theme of testing/temptation and then explores Jesus' own experiences with temptation in Mark. In the course of her work, Garrett reads key passages of Mark in light of first-century Jewish and Christian cultural conventions about the testing or tempting of the righteous. This background material affords a fresh perspective on Mark's views concerning such fundamental issues as the person and work of Jesus, the church, the twelve disciples, and the nature of Christian discipleship.
Contemporary Jewish Writing in Hungary

Contemporary Jewish Writing in Hungary

University of Nebraska Press

sidottu
Contemporary Jewish Writing in Hungary features works by twenty-four of Hungary's best writers who have written about what it means to be Jewish in post-Holocaust Eastern Europe. This volume includes work by Nobel Prize winner Imre Kert sz and other internationally known writers such as Gy rgy Konr d and P ter N das, but most of the authors appear here in English for the first time. This anthology features poetry, long and short stories, and excerpts from memoirs and novels by postwar writers. Some of these authors were well known in Hungary before World War II, some were children or adolescents during the war and began publishing in the 1970s, some were born to survivors in the years immediately following the war and grew up during the decades of Communist rule, while others started publishing chiefly after the fall of Communism in 1989. Unique among Eastern European countries, Hungary still has a large and visible Jewish population, many of them writers and intellectuals living in Budapest. This anthology introduces English-speaking readers to outstanding works of literature that show the wide range of responses to Jewish identity in contemporary Hungary. The editors' introduction provides a historical and critical context for these works and discusses the important role of Jews in Hungarian culture from the late nineteenth century to the present.

The Sacred Gaze

The Sacred Gaze

Susan R. Pitchford

Liturgical Press
2014
pokkari
Eight hundred years ago, Clare of Assisi advised a correspondent to gaze into the mirror of the crucified Christ and study her own face within it. A hundred years ago, sociologist Charles Horton Cooley said we can know our self only as it is reflected to us by others. Contemplation is the choice to find our reflection in the divine Mirror. In The Sacred Gaze, Susan Pitchford explores how a false self is created by distortions in the mirrors around us. Drawing from the mystical and sociological traditions, and with practical suggestions for how to begin, Pitchford shows how gazing into the face of Christ can reveal to us who we really are. When the true self is known, and known as God’s beloved, the way is opened to radical freedom and joy.

Readin' + Writin' for the Hard-Hat Crowd explores the history of an urban public university from its conception in 1964 to the dawn of the twenty-first century. The reader views this place in time through the lens of the evolving nature of freshman English , an introductory curriculum that began as four semesters of Great Books. The author, herself among those once labeled the hard-hat crowd , received an undergraduate education similar to that experienced by her contemporaries at elite private colleges. Yet, while this school, once considered a poor man's Harvard, was founded with a mission to provide academic equity, the curriculum evolved to one that responded to pressure for relevancy and practicality.
The Flight to Objectivity

The Flight to Objectivity

Susan R. Bordo

State University of New York Press
1987
pokkari
The Flight to Objectivity offers a new reading of Descartes' Meditations informed by cultural history, psychoanalytic and cognitive psychology, and feminist thought. It focuses not on Descartes' arguments as "timeless," culturally disembodied events, but on the psychological drama and imagery of the Meditations explored in the context of the historical instability of the seventeenth century and deep historical changes in the structure of human experience. The study includes textual and cultural material that together comprise a gradually unfolding psychocultural reading of the Meditations. Descartes' famous doubt, and the ideal of objectivity which conquered that doubt, are considered as philosophical expressions of a cultural "drama of parturition" from the medieval universe, a process that generated new forms of experience, new cultural anxieties, and ultimately, new strategies for control and mastery of an utterly changed and alien world. Themes that figure prominently in recent literature on seventeenth-century philosophy and science-the birth of the mind as "mirror of nature," and the "masculine" nature of modern science, the "death of nature"-are explored with reference to Descartes as a pivotal figure in the birth of modernity.

Fieldwork has long been seen as central to anthropology as a critical source of ethnographic data and analytic insight. In the late 1970s, earlier assumptions about fieldwork method and epistemological grounding were challenged in so-called reflexive ethnographies. These ethnographies, specifically focused on the field project, were part of the general interpretive turn in American social science which itself was concurrent with the turmoil in American society in the late 1960s. This work reflects on the reflexive ethnographies, their method, intention, and claims, and situates them as incipient postmodern anthropological practice, as well as linking them to the American context of their production.Trencher examines American intellectual, political, and economic contexts from 1960 to 1980, as reconstructed through disciplinary and professional sources in Anthropology. This cultural context is then linked to changes in American ethnographic practice. Selected works are analyzed as cultural productions, the form and content of which was permeated by and revealed characteristically American constructs for interpreting social reality.
