Religious Television and Pious Authority in Pakistan
In Pakistan, religious talk shows emerged as a popular television genre following the 2002 media liberalization reforms. Since then, these shows have become important platforms where ideas about Islam and religious authority in Pakistan are developed and argued. In Religious Television and Pious Authority in Pakistan, Taha Kazi reveals how these talk shows mediate changes in power, belief, and practice. She also identifies the sacrifices and compromises that religious scholars feel compelled to make in order to ensure their presence on television. These scholars, of varying doctrinal and educational backgrounds—including madrasa-educated scholars and self-taught celebrity preachers—are given screen time to debate and issue religious edicts on the authenticity and contemporary application of Islamic concepts and practices. In response, viewers are sometimes allowed to call in live with questions. Kazi maintains that these featured debates inspire viewers to reevaluate the status of scholarly edicts, thereby fragmenting religious authority. By exploring how programming decisions inadvertently affect viewer engagements with Islam, Religious Television and Pious Authority in Pakistan looks beyond the revivalist impact of religious media and highlights the prominence of religious talk shows in disrupting expectations about faith.
Water Loss Assessment in Distribution Networks
Water utilities worldwide lose 128 billion cubic meters annually, causing annual monetary losses estimated at USD 40 billion. Most of these losses occur in developing countries (74%). This calls for rethinking the challenges facing water utilities in developing countries, foremost of which is the assessment of water losses in intermittent supply networks. Water loss assessment methods were originally developed in continuous supply systems, and their application in intermittently operated networks (in developing countries) is hindered by the widespread use of household water tanks and unauthorised consumption. This study provides an extensive review of existing methods and (software) tools for water loss assessment. In addition, several new methods were developed, which offer improved water loss assessment in intermittent supply. As the volume of water loss varies monthly and annually according to the amount of supplied water, this study proposes procedures to normalise the volume of water loss in order to enable water utilities to monitor and benchmark their performance on water loss management. The study also developed a novel method of estimating apparent losses using routine data of WWTP inflows, enabling future real-time monitoring of losses in networks. Different methods have also been suggested to estimate the unauthorised consumption in networks. This study found that minimum night flow analysis can still be applied in intermittent supply if an area of the network is supplied for several days. Furthermore, this study concluded that water meter performance is enhanced in intermittent supply conditions. However, continuous supply in the presence of float-valves significantly reduces the accuracy of water meters. Finally, this study provides guidance and highlights several knowledge gaps in order to improve the accuracy of water loss assessment in intermittent supply. Accurate assessment of water loss is a prerequisite for reliable leakage modelling and minimisation as well as planning for, and monitoring of water loss management in distribution networks.
Corporatist Ideology in Kemalist Turkey

Corporatist Ideology in Kemalist Turkey

Taha Parla; Andrew Davison

This book provides an informed analysis of the ideological content of Kemalism - the name given to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's party's political thought and practice - and the persistently official and semi-official, hegemonic ideology of the Turkish Republic, formally founded in 1923. Through a textual and contextual analysis of Kemalism in Atarurk's speeches and the official documents of the ruling Republican People's Party, Taha Parla and Andrew Davison offer fresh interpretations of the political, economic, social, and cultural goals of the Kemalist version of Turkish nationalism. They also provide an astute analysis of the power and authority that Araturk and his collegues believed were necessary to achieve their implementation, and of the institutions created in that process. Kemalism as a democratizing and secularizing framework for modern governance is debated by illuminating Kemalism's emphatic and self-conscious, corporatist ideological core. The authors show how Kemalism's conceptions of society, national identity, the relationship between the state and Islam, and other fundamental political dynamics require a rethinking of its democratic, secular, and modernist reputation, and its prospects for, and barriers to, a more democratic Turkey within the Kemalist legacy.

Post-Keynesian Empirical Research and the Debate on Financial Market Development
Current research often highlights the importance of financial markets as well as financial system development. However, the current literature in this field still fails to adequately explain the relationship between financial market and macroeconomic development.Post-Keynesian Empirical Research and the Debate on Financial Market Development integrates the concept of financial intermediaries with Post-Keynesian macroeconomic modeling to discuss the relationship between financial markets and systems and macroeconomic development. Discussing key macroeconomic variables such as investment, savings, and productivity growth, this timely resource is essential for students, academicians, as well as finance and economics professionals interested in uncovering the latest research in this field.

We Survived Iraq and TurkeyA True Story of an Iraqi Kurdish Family's Escape to USA in 1990 Long Road to Freedom provides a compelling account of one family's quest for freedom, for escape from the brutal Saddam Hussein regime and the search for a better life in America. The book recounts Taha Muhammad's early life in Kirkuk, Iraq, and his experience in leading his wife and four sons through treacherous mountain country into Turkey, where the family encountered more oppression and discrimination at the hands of Turkish military and security forces. After surviving several life threatening events, and moving from one refugee camp to another, the family finally reached a US military base in the city of Zakho, Kurdistan of Iraq. From there they were able to eventually find asylum in the United States, where Taha was able to resume his teaching career and to provide opportunities for his sons-and security for his wife, Malika. Taha later served for almost four years as a translator, assisting US troops in Iraq. The book provides insights into the plight of Kurds throughout the Middle East, and it offers an inspirational account of a family's determination to find a better life. The story details the courage, bravery, and resolve that moved and sustained the family through daunting times; and it is truly a captivating and gripping version of a familiar American narrative-flight from tyranny and the pursuit of a new life in a new country. "Taha Muhammad Ali speaks with an emotional forthrightness. . . . He has developed a style that seems both ancient and new, deceptively simple and movingly direct."--The Washington Post Taha Muhammad Ali is a revered Palestinian poet whose work is driven by vivid imagination, disarming humor, and unflinching honesty. As a boy he was exiled from his hometown, but rather than turning to a protest poetry of black-and-white slogans to convey this loss, he has created art of the highest order. His poems portray experiences that range from catastrophe to splendor, each preserving an essential human dignity. Neither music fame nor wealth, not even poetry itself, could provide consolation for life's brevity, or the fact that King Learis a mere eighty pages long, and comes to an end, and for the thought that one might suffer greatlyon account of a rebellious child. So What will include Arabic en face and introductions by co-translators Gabriel Levin and Peter Cole. Muhammad Ali will be one of the international poets featured at the 2006 Dodge Poetry Festival, and he will embark on a reading tour of the United States in the fall of 2006.
The Mechanics of Lorentz Transformations

The Mechanics of Lorentz Transformations

The subject of this book is the mechanics of Lorentz transformations which is commonly investigated under the title of special relativity theory. The motive for setting the subject of investigation as Lorentz transformations instead of special relativity is objectivity. However, we also investigate special relativity thoroughly as a possible interpretation of the mechanics of Lorentz transformations. The book originates from a collection of personal notes and tutorials about topics and applications related to modern physics and tensor calculus. The book includes many solved problems as well as extensive sets of exercises whose solutions are available in another book. The book also contains a number of high quality graphic illustrations. A rather thorough index is also added to the book to enable keyword search and provide a useful list for the main technical terms of this subject. Cross referencing is used extensively where these cross references are hyperlinked in the digital versions. The book can be used as a guiding text or as a reference for a first course on the mechanics of Lorentz transformations or as part of a course on modern physics or tensor calculus or even special relativity.
