Sonidos en contexto is a comprehensive, theory-independent description of Spanish phonetics and phonology for intermediate to advanced students. It provides articulatory descriptions of native pronunciations, as well as practical advice on producing native-like sounds and a logical progression of exercises leading to that end. What sets this book apart from other phonetics texts is its emphasis on real-world examples of spoken Spanish, using native pronunciation modeled in natural contexts. While other available texts stress phonetic theory, this one provides hands-on activities that are entertaining, culturally framed, and relevant to students’ interests and experiences. The book also includes a downloadable instructor’s manual, as well as engaging, colorful exercises in the text, photos of realia, and a high quality and very diverse 6-hour audio program, available online.

This small book is a simplified, abbreviated, and updated version of the author's Free Energy Transduction in Biology, published in 1977 (Academic Press, New York). The present book is meant to be a textbook for a class or for self-study. The first chapter gives a self-contained and elementary discussion of the principles of free energy transduction in biology. Section 5 includes new material on the Onsager coefficients Lij (for systems near equilibrium) not avail able in 1977. Some readers may wish to study the first chapter only. The second chapteris a little more sophisticated, and deals with the so-called diagram method for calculating steady-state probabili ties and cycle fluxes. Although these concepts are useful in the analysis of free energy transduction systems, they have an intrinsic importance and interest. Section 8 summarizes quite recent new results not included in the 1977 book. The third chapter is again a step more sophisticated. Some readers may wish to omit it. Free energy levels of the states in a kinetic diagram are introduced. This topic is primarily of conceptual inter est for ordinary kinetic diagrams but it is essential in understanding muscle contraction (and related systems) at the molecular level. This three-part treatment translates the technical language of research monographs on the theory of free energy transfer in biology, making the subject more accessible to those entering the field. Designed for upper-level classes in biochemistry or biophysics, it can also be used for independent study. The first chapter presents a self-contained, elementary discussion of the principles involved; the second chapter is a little more advanced and examines the diagram method for calculating steady-state probabilities and cycle fluxes. The third chapter is increasingly sophisticated, introducing free energy levels of the state in a kinetic diagram. 1989 ed. 2 tables. 36 figures. Index.

Though it be a bit scattered to most readers, God pushed me to cover a lot of ground in this little book. Everything I write is based on some personal experience or difficulty that me or my loved ones have faced. From my perspective, just about every topic I cover is offensive or distasteful or taboo in the minds of most people - Christian or not. Yet nothing in these pages is outside the bounds of God's Word and His will as best I can tell from my readers and my conscience. I speak very candidly, very openly, very genuinely to each of many very provocative subjects. I lunge into areas where most would never go in a tone that most would never take. Yet as I say in the book, am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. - Galatians 1:10 ESV. At this point after writing and reviewing the book for a couple of years, and at this point in my life as a husband, a father, a church member, and a Christ follower, I am simply and humbly the messenger. I have no agenda of my own that has not passed through His hands with much prayer and deliberation and counsel. I know and understand that the success or failure of this little project, in terms of its effectiveness, rests totally in the hands of Him anyway - why should I endeavor to do anything but His will with it? For most who dare to delve into the pages of this venture, you will no doubt be offended, or perhaps feel insulted, as you contemplate the validity, sincerity and purpose of a mere man who takes you on a very radical journey. The only possible pretense for most of you will be answering the question, did this man really hear from the one true God or is he simply a fraud. Be sure to take it all the way to the end before you make your call FYI - you can see the Kindle version of the book if you would like a preview of the contents.

Men in Political Theory

Men in Political Theory

Terrell Carver

Manchester University Press

Men in political theory builds on feminist re-readings of the traditional canon of male writers in Political Philosophy by turning the 'gender lens' on to the representation of men in widely studies texts. It explains the distinction between 'man' as an apparently de-gendered 'individual' or 'citizen', and 'man' as an overtly gendered being in human society. Both these representations of 'man' are crucial to a clearer understanding of the operation of gender.Newly available in paperback, the book is the first to use the 'men's studies' and 'masculinities' literatures in re-thinking the political problems that students and specialists in the social sciences and humanities must encounter: consent, obligation, patriarchy, gender, sexuality, life-cycle, and discriminatory disadvantage related to sex, age, class, race/ethnicity and disability. It does this by re-examining the historical materials from which present-day concepts of citizenship, individuality, identity, subjectivity, normativity and legitimacy arise. The ten chapters on Plato, Aristotle, Jesus, Augustine, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Marx and Engels show the operation of the 'gender lens' in different ways, depending on how the philosopher deploys concepts of men and masculinity to pose and solve classic problems. They can all be read independently and are as suitable for those just making the acquaintance of these classic writers as for those with specialist knowledge and interests.
T.O.

T.O.

In this remarkably candid book, the NFL's most colorful and controversial athlete tells his own Philadelphia story. Terrell Owens joined the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2004 season hoping to help the Eagles win the Super Bowl. The Eagles almost did it, losing a close game to the New England Patriots. TO expected to have a long and productive career in Philadelphia. But less than halfway through the 2005 season it all fell apart. TO was suspended, first for a game, then for the season, as the Eagles blamed him for a variety of infractions. Now TO speaks out about what really happened in Philadelphia. He takes readers behind the scenes -- and into the huddle -- to show how he was unfairly blamed for conduct detrimental to his team. After setting an Eagles record for touchdown receptions, TO was badly injured late in the 2004 season. Most observers thought his season was over. But TO put himself through a grueling rehab, which he describes here, to recover in time to join his teammates in the Super Bowl, turning in a remarkable performance. Convinced that the Eagles could win it all in 2005, TO became only the sixth receiver in NFL history with 100 touchdown receptions. He explains in T.O. how and why his relationship with Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb deteriorated. The situation worsened when TO agreed with Michael Irvin that the Eagles would be better off with Brett Favre as their quarterback. A fight in the team locker room, where an injured TO had to defend himself, caused further friction. Before long he was suspended from the team for the entire season. TO contested his suspension and took his case before an arbitrator. In this book TO brings readers into the hearing room and shows how unfair the arbitrator's precedent-setting decision really was. The decision was so wrong that even the NFL agreed to pass a rule specifically reversing it. But T.O. is a story of triumph and dedication. TO never lost his commitment to the game, and whenever he had the chance, he performed like the sensational athlete he is. He knew he would play again, and his faith was rewarded when he signed a three-year, $25 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys prior to the 2006 season. Throughout his ordeal, TO remained true to himself, the same outsized personality who has rocked the NFL and become a football superstar.
