One of the worst acts of racial violence in American history took place in 1921, when a White mob numbering in the thousands decimated the thriving Black community of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Burning recreates Greenwood at the height of its prosperity, explores the currents of hatred, racism, and mistrust between its Black residents and Tulsa's White population, narrates events leading up to and including Greenwood's devastation, and documents the subsequent silence that surrounded this tragedy. Delving into history that's long been pushed aside, this is the true story of Black Wall Street and the Tulsa Race Massacre, with updates that connect the historical significance of the massacre to the ongoing struggle for racial justice in America.

In 1921, a white mob murdered hundreds of citizens and decimated the thriving Black community of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma. With chilling details, humanity, and the narrative thrust of compelling fiction, The Burning recreates the town of Greenwood at the height of its prosperity, explores the currents of hatred, racism, and mistrust between its Black residents and neighbouring Tulsa's white population, narrates events leading up to and including Greenwood's annihilation, and documents the subsequent silence that surrounded this great tragedy. Delving into history that's long been pushed aside, much like Hidden Figures, In the Shadow of Liberty, and Claudette Colvin, this is the true story of Black Wall Street and the Tulsa Race Massacre, adapted for young readers.
The Lonely Young & the Lonely Old
Fiction. THE LONELY YOUNG & THE LONELY OLD is a collection of lyrical fictions. Told in the words of unnamed narrators, each story gives voice to the easily dismissed, speaks from the center of an almost paralyzed intensity, desperately searching for articulation and belonging, beautifully capturing simplicity and generosity with poetic brilliance.
You're Only Young Twice

You're Only Young Twice

Tim Morris

Original and thought-provoking, You're Only Young Twice reveals the complexities that underlie even the sparest picture book text and the lessons that reside in even the most familiar family movie plots. Moving from classic texts (The Secret Garden, Goodnight Moon) to ephemera (the Hardy Boys, Goosebumps, and Harry Potter series), from the printed page to the silver screen (Willie Wonka, Jumanji, 101 Dalmatians, Beethoven), Tim Morris employs his experience as a parent and teacher to interrogate children's culture and reveal its conflicting messages. Books and films for children--favorites accepted as wholesome fare for impressionable young minds --do not always teach straightforward lessons. Instead, they reflect the anxieties of the times and the desires of adults. At the heart of many a children's classic lies power, often expressed through racism, sexism, or violence. Under Morris's gaze, revered animal stories like Black Beauty turn into litanies of abuse; fantasies of childhood like Big are revealed as patriarchal struggles. You're Only Young Twice redirects the focus on children's literature, asking not "What messages should children receive?" but "What messages do adults actually send?" For example, Morris recounts his own childhood confusion upon viewing Peter Pan, with its queenish, inept pirate and a grown woman (Mary Martin) in tights who pretends to be a crowing boy. Morris shatters our long-held assumptions and challenges our best intentions, demonstrating how children's literature and films lay bare a troubled and troubling worldview.

We see a very special bond when a parent reads nursery rhymes to a child. In no small part is the closeness elicited by the child's delight in language. Even before babies are aware that words have meanings they respond to the rhymes and rhymes that characterise verses for the very young. Language has an aesthetic as well as a utilitarian function, and appreciation of the former quality is almost certainly innate. Although children will have stories read to them when they attend primary school, poetry is all too often conspicuous by its absence. This is a pity bearing in mind the evident pleasure afforded by nursery rhymes prior to school attendance. In the early and mid-20th century it was a commonplace for children to learn poems by heart and to recite them. These poems could often be recalled word for word in later life. Why this valuable activity is so rare in schools today is a mystery. Experience of teaching poetry in primary schools gives us a clear idea of the kind of poems children enjoy. In the first place, formal verses which rhyme are preferred to free verse. In terms of subjects, poems about children are understandably popular, as are poems about animals. Humour, too, is appreciated by those of primary school age. And this collection features poems on all the themes mentioned. It is hoped that children – and their parents and younger teachers – will find much to please in Poems for the Young at Heart.

LOAC Essentials Presents King Features Volume 2: Tim Tyler's Luck 1933
These never-before-collected strips represent an essential transition point that would forever change the direction of adventure comics. Lyman Young's Tim Tyler's Luck was a successful series set in exotic locales before Alex Raymond signed on as Young's assistant. It's in these 1932-1933 strips, as Raymond assumed greater and greater responsibility for the drawing, that he developed the prototypes for Flash Gordon, Dale Arden, and Jungle Jim, and the style for which he became famous a year later. LOAC Essentials reprints, in yearly volumes, the daily newspaper strips that are essential to comics history, seminal strips that are unique creations in their own right, while also significantly contributing to the advancement of the medium. The strips are reproduced one per page, giving readers an immersive experience, similar to the one newspapers readers had many decades ago-reading the comics one day at a time.

Battling the cultural and societal stigma, stereotypes and shame often associated with mental health diagnosis and treatment, the young author chronicles his often painful journey to mental health and wellness. With epidemics of school underachievement, bullying, school, street and family violence, in addition to soaring rates of suicide, and hopelessness among various populations of young people, this book is a must read. By simply telling his story, this young man's gritty real-deal account provides a road map for youth, from a young, urban new author, who has walked a mile in their shoes. With courage and determination, he continues on the road to wellness, despite setbacks, relapses and life circumstances that presented new obstacles to overcome. This book foregrounds the provision of education for young people who have been remanded or sentenced into custody. Both international conventions and national legislation and guidelines in many countries point to the right of children and young people to access education while they are incarcerated. Moreover, education is often seen as an important protective and ‘rehabilitative’ factor. However, the conditions associated with incarceration generate particular challenges for enabling participation in education. Bridging the fields of education and youth justice, this book offers a social justice analysis through the lens of ‘participatory parity’, the book brings together rare interviews with staff and young people in youth justice settings in Australia, secondary data from these sites, a suite of pertinent and frank reports, and international scholarship. Drawing on this rich set of material, the book demonstrates not only the challenges but also the possibilities for education as a conduit for social justice in custodial youth justice. The book will be of immediate relevance to governments and youth justice staff for meaningfully meeting their obligation of enabling children and young people in custody to benefit from education; and of interest to scholars and researchers in education, youth work and criminology.
