When the Mississippi school boy is asked who is called the 'Great Commoner' of public life in his State,"" wrote Mississippi's premier historian Dunbar Rowland in 1901, ""he will unhesitatingly answer James Z. George."" While George's prominence has decreased through the decades since then, many modern historians still view him as a supremely important Mississippian, with one writing that George (1826-1897) was ""Mississippi's most important Democratic leader in the late nineteenth century."" Certainly, the Mexican War veteran, prominent lawyer and planter, Civil War officer, Reconstruction leader, state Supreme Court chief justice, and Mississippi's longest serving United States senator in his day deserves a full biography. And, George's importance was greater than just on the state level as other Southerners copied his tactics to secure white supremacy in their own states. James Z. George: Mississippi's Great Commoner seeks to rectify the lack of attention to George's life. In doing so, this volume utilizes numerous sources never before or only slightly used, primarily a large collection of George's letters held by his descendents and never used by historians. Such wonderful sources allow a glimpse not only into his times, but perhaps more importantly an exploration of the man himself, his traits, personality, and ideas. The result is a picture of an extremely commonplace individual on the surface but an exceptionally complicated man underneath. James Z. George: Mississippi's Great Commoner will bring this important Mississippi leader of the nineteenth century back into the minds of twenty-first-century Mississippians.

The first page sells the book. The last page sells your next book. --- Frank Morrison (Mickey) Spillane. A few years ago I wrote a small book about opening lines to great novels. It is still available on Amazon Kindle books. One review pointed out that my first book (One-Hundred Opening Lines To Great Novels) was fun to read "but seemed somewhat incomplete." I can say that the first book was not everything I wanted it to be. So this is the result I wanted to expand on the basic idea I had for the first book and make this book more appealing with more information and exciting material. What do you do after looking at the front cover, the back cover, or a random page of a book? I like to read the opening chapter, and I'm guessing that is what most people do. I will admit, but I don't have any empirical evidence to back this up any more than I can imagine that some people read the last chapter of a book to find out how it ends. I briefly considered writing a book based on how it ends, for obvious reasons, I abandoned the idea. The author of any book must capture your attention with the opening chapter and make you want to discover what happens next. When I considered writing another book about the opening lines to books I wanted to add more about the plot, authors and more books by a particular author and interesting quotes either from the author themselves or one of the characters in their written work. But you know what they say about quotes? People who like quotations love meaningless generalizations. You'll read about one of the first authors to write about a modern detective. Moreover, that's not Dashelle Hammett. A large section of the book is devoted to mystery, thriller, crime, and detective fiction. You will also read about science fiction, fantasy, and classic and beloved stories and read about authors Carroll John Daly, Cornell Woolrich, David Goodis, Erle Stanley Gardner, Mark Twain, George V. Higgins. It is possible that you have never heard of these authors, but they are still very readable today. Reading about these authors you will find some beautiful works from writers you may not be acquainted with and lesser-known works from authors you know well. You'll read about J.D. Salinger, William Faulkner, Robert B. Parker, John Le Carre, George Orwell, Thomas Pynchon, Vladimir Nabokov, James Joyce, More. I have a fondness for crime writers so... to give you an idea of the contents of the book...Here is a short piece from author Jonathan Latimer from his book Solomon's Vineyard: "I like big men," she said. Her voice was raspy like she had a cold. She came up to me and grabbed my arm. Her fingers hurt the muscles. I could smell her perfume. She came close to me. I thought I knew what she wanted. I tried to kiss her. She jerked away."No." I'm sorry."She slapped me. She was strong, my cheek stung. She moved in, swinging both arms. Now she had her fists closed. She hit my arms and my chest. I tried to hold her."Hit me " she said. It was goddam queer. I held her arms, but she got loose. How's that for incorrect social interaction in today's world? This novel was written in 1941 and caused such a sensation in the U.S. with its depiction of murder, violence, perverse sexuality and twisted religion that it was not published in America until 1988, more than forty years after its first release in Britain. Now you can read this book, Novel Beginnings, straight through, or pick it up at any point you want. Enjoy it and discover a book you are not familiar with by a favorite author and read the plot description ( I promise that I have not revealed any spoilers) or find an author you have not encountered before and will be inspired to learn their work.
Nearly forty years after the outbreak of the “Minamata Disease,” it remains one of the most horrific examples of environmental poisoning. Based on primary documents and interviews, this book describes three rounds of responses to this incidence of mercury poisoning, focusing on the efforts of its victims and their supporters, particularly the activities of grassroots movements and popular campaigns, to secure redress.Timothy S. George argues that Japan’s postwar democracy is ad hoc, fragile, and dependent on definition through citizen action and that the redress effort is exemplary of the great changes in the second and third postwar decades that redefined democracy in Japan.

This work examines the basic social-psychological problems that generate the need for social trust and other acculturation strategies. Social trust is examined within the context of competing social problem-solving tools. The authors analyze the problem of how social trust can be encouraged within a cultural context that favors other socialization strategies, particularly distrust. They look at the relation between social trust and risk communication, specifically how social trust might be used to transform public participation; from an ineffective formalist show into a creative, community-building, problem-solving process. The work distinguishes between two forms of social trust pertinent to our world today: pluralistic, which occurs within groups and is based on existing values, and cosmopolitan, which is an across-group phenomenon and is based on emerging values. Earle and Cvetkovich's study is the story of gradual movement from pluralistic to cosmopolitan social trust.

Cotton's Renaissance is an analytical and interpretive history of the responses of US cotton growers to problems of supply and demand, and of the unique public–private organization they founded to help them grow, compete, and survive in an increasingly competitive marketplace. It is a story of how cotton growers learned, after more than a century and a half of trying to manage supply, that they could actually influence demand for their commodity. The impact of that company, Cotton Incorporated, on the markets for cotton was a remarkable achievement in organizational entrepreneurship. In its 'total marketing' effort to rebuild cotton's market share, it has fostered substantial scientific, technological, and managerial improvements in the quality and performance of cotton. In doing so, it has enhanced the efficiency of not only the farmers who grow cotton, but also those who transform it into consumer goods.

The authors present core concepts of entrepreneurship in an easy-to-follow, logical sequence. Starting with basic definitions and an overarching conceptual framework in Part I, the book then addresses topics pertaining to Venture Initiation (Part II), Venture Management (Part III), and Venture Development (Part IV). Each chapter contains a case study in which a real-life entrepreneur, who confronts the issues of growth and competition, is followed. Venture initiation and development are key components of this book.Entrepreneurship has all the standard features that entrepreneurs-in-training need. The book's strength, however, lies in the clear, straightforward, and logical manner in which the various topics within this complex subject are presented. The book also includes learning objectives, outlines, terms, and review questions.
