Tristan`s Shadow – Sexuality and the Total Work of Art after Wagner
Das Rheingold, Die Walkure, and Siegfried. Parsifal. Tristan und Isolde. Both revered and reviled, Richard Wagner conceived some of the nineteenth century's most important operatic productions - and created some of the most indelible characters ever to grace the stage. But over the course of his polarizing career, Wagner also composed nearly twenty volumes of writing on opera. His influential concept of Gesamtkunstwerk - the "total work of art" - famously and controversially offered a way to unify the different media of an opera into a coherent whole. Less well-known, however, are Wagner's strange theories on sexuality - like his ideas about erotic acoustics and the metaphysics of sexual difference. Drawing on the discourses of psychoanalysis, evolutionary biology, and other developing fields of study that informed Wagner's world, Adrian Daub traces the influence of Gesamtkunstwerk and eroticism from their classic expressions in Tristan und Isolde into the work of the generation of composers that followed, including Zemlinsky, d'Albert, Schreker, and Strauss. For decades after Wagner's death, Daub writes, these composers continued to grapple with his ideas and with his overwhelming legacy, trying in vain to write their way out from Tristan's shadow.
Tristan and the Lure of Caraval
Part of The Round Table Chronicles 'So, you are the one we call the Caraval. The Beautiful, ' an older, hoarse voice rang out in the Pict language, and even though she had never met him, Bedwyr knew immediately who it was. 'A woman warrior that drinks ale with kings and battles the fates.' There was a rustle and a shift, as more Woads appeared out of the brush, stepping closer to her, their dark eyes never wavering from their trapped prey. 'I however will call you little Morr gan. The Raven that follows Death.' Their bond was legendary, passed down from generation to generation until fact became fiction and the scholars failed to remember - failed to record - that long ago, Isolde went by a very different name to follow her king - and her hawk. ‘A Landmark in Musical History’ is John Luke Rose’s title for the introduction to this extraordinary piece of theatre. It belongs to the German tradition of mystical writing, and a short note on the poem itself by Martin Swales and Timothy McFarland elucidates some of Wagner’s literary techniques. Anthony Negus, who assisted Reginald Goodall on the WNO production of Tristan und Isolde, has contributed a penetrating analysis of the musical structure of the opera, while Patrick Carnegy assesses the remarkable solutions to staging an opera which some argue is best experienced with your back to the performers.Contents: Synopsis, Timothy McFarland; ‘Tristan and Isolde’: A Landmark in Musical History, John Luke Rose; A Musical Commentary, Anthony Negus; The staging of ‘Tristan and Isolde’: Landmarks along the Appian Way, Patrick Carnegy; An Introduction to the German Text, Martin Swales and Timothy McFarland; Tristan und Isolde: Poem by Richard Wagner; Tristan and Isolde: English Translation by Andrew Porter

Richard Wagner's devotees have ranged from the subtlest minds (Proust) to the most brutal (Hitler). The enduring fascination with his works arises not only from his singular fusion of musical innovation and theatrical daring, but also from his largely overlooked engagement with the boldest investigations of modern philosophy. In this radically clarifying book, Bryan Magee traces Wagner's intellectual quests, from his youthful embrace of revolutionary socialism to the near-Buddhist resignation of his final years. Magee shows how abstract thought can permeate music and stimulate creations of great power and beauty. And he unflinchingly confronts the Wagner whose paranoia, egocentricity, and anti-Semitism are as repugnant as his achievements are glorious. At once a biography of the composer, an overview of his times, and an exploration of the intellectual and technical aspects of music, Magee's lucid study offers the best explanation of W. H. Auden's judgment that Wagner, for all his notoriety, was "perhaps the greatest genius that ever lived."
