A slender, realistic story of a young man's coming of age, Very Far Away from Anywhere Else is one of the most inspiring novels Ursula K. Le Guin ever published.Owen is seventeen and smart. He knows what he wants to do with his life. But then he meets Natalie and he realizes he doesn't know anything much at all. "Like all Le Guin's work, Very Far Away from Anywhere Else is about the invisible structures of society and about the challenge to live honestly. On a Sunday years ago I was lucky to encounter a book that could show me the breadth our lives have--that the discovery of what leads us on is better than the goal of perfection." --Emily Schultz, Bustle"An engaging, well written novel." --New York Times

Very Practical Ethics

Very Practical Ethics

David Benatar

OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS INC
2024
sidottu
In Very Practical Ethics David Benatar discusses some of the moral problems that ordinary people face in their everyday lives. These are not moral problems that arise only in extraordinary circumstances, nor those which are confronted only by select people in their professional or public roles; rather, they are problems that most people face on a daily basis. They are “very practical” issues, both because of their ubiquity, and because individuals are usually able to act on their decisions. Among these very practical questions: When is sex morally permissible? What duties does an individual have regarding the environment? When may we engage in practices such as smoking that might cause discomfort or increase the risk of harm to others? How extensive are our duties to assist the world's poor and others in dire need of help? Is it morally permissible to consume animals and their products? When is language prejudicial? Is it wrong to swear? How should we address and refer to others? When, if ever, is controversial humour morally permissible? Is it always wrong to bullshit, or to fail to call out the bullshit of others? When should we forgive--or not forgive? Written accessibly and covering topics not often discussed by moral philosophers, Very Practical Ethics will be of interest to students and other readers who care about how we might resolve the kinds of ethical issues we all face every day.

Very Different, But Much the Same

Very Different, But Much the Same

W. G. Runciman

Oxford University Press
2014
sidottu
Very Different, but Much the Same takes as its starting point the distribution of political, ideological, and economic power between English society's constituent roles from the time when Daniel Defoe was writing Robinson Crusoe, and argues that Defoe would find it remarkably similar three centuries later despite all the changes in technology, lifestyles, amenities, beliefs, attitudes, norms, and values by which he would no doubt be astonished. The disjunction between the two is explained by bringing to bear the approach of current evolutionary sociological theory in which the reproduction or extinction of a society's institutional practices is traced to selective environmental pressures which are independent of the personal motives and subjective experiences of the individuals whose practices they are. It is further argued that the rates of high absolute and low relative social mobility that sociologists have documented in detail for the twentieth century are likely to have been much the same during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The conclusion drawn is that for as long as the country was not defeated in a European war, the probability of a radical change in institutional distribution of power was extremely low throughout, however much contemporary observers or later historians would have either welcomed or deplored it.
Very Easy True Stories

Very Easy True Stories

Sandra Heyer

Pearson Education (US)

Would you believe ... ? • The parents of two daughters eagerly await the birth of their third child, hoping for a son. They get a big surprise -- quadruplets! All four are...girls! • A waitress accepts a lottery ticket as a tip, instead of cash. And the ticket wins $6 million! • A middle-aged couple are still in love and want to stay married -- but they just can’t get along. What is their solution to the dilemma? Separate side-by-side houses! These stories, selected from mainstream news sources, are very low-level but high interest -- humorous, poignant, astounding -- and all true! They are told as simply as possible -- exclusively in the present tense -- and all stories are less than 1/2 page long. Very Easy True Stories, by Sandra Heyer, is an ideal first text for students with little experience with English. It is a companion book to All New Very Easy True Stories, which is at the same level but features all new stories and exercises. These two parallel readers give students the option of lingering at the low-beginning level. They can go back and forth between Very Easy True Stories and All New Very Easy True Stories, or they can complete first one book and then the other. Or teachers can use Very Easy True Stories one semester and All New Very Easy True Stories the next. That way, students who stay in a low-beginning class when their classmates move on to the next level can essentially repeat the class but with all new material. Combined, the two books offer 28 stories, giving teachers multiple opportunities to incorporate reading into their thematically-based instructional units. Features • First, students see a series of captioned pictures that clarify the meaning of the sentences beneath the pictures. • Next, students read the story in text form for real reading practice. • Finally, students complete exercises following each story to develop basic reading skills as well as build pronunciation, spelling, and vocabulary proficiency. The True Stories series includes: True Stories Behind the Songs More True Stories Behind the Songs Very Easy True Stories All New Very Easy True Stories Easy True Stories, Second Edition All New Easy True Stories True Stories in the News, Third Edition More True Stories, Third Edition Even More True Stories, Third Edition Beyond True Stories
