Means of Transportation and Registration of Nationality
This book examines the concept of nationality of means of transportation in terms of jurisdiction in international law. It reassesses the definition of nationality and explores how it is conferred. The book first places nationality in the broader perspective of jurisdiction in international law, and examines the historical development and necessity of the nationality of means of transportation. It goes on to investigate whether and under which conditions international organizations may confer a ‘nationality’ on means of transportation, examining the law of the sea conventions and air and space treaties. The book finally explores several questions relating to international registration of means of transportation, building a regime of international registration. Vincent Cogliati-Bantz introduces a necessary distinction between transport internationally registered and transport registered in a State but fulfilling a mission for an international organization. As a work that proposes the ability for international organisations to access international spaces without reliance on State-registered means of transport, this book will be of great use and interest to scholars and students of public international law, international organisations, and maritime, space, and aviation law.

A rollicking quick read It's "Master and Commander" meets "Star Wars" with a liberal dash of "Debbie Does the Royal Navy". In 1815 a British squadron gets mistakenly whisked off to another planet and lands right in the middle of an intergalactic war. Things get especially interesting when the Brits ally with the League of Planet's energy beings, who take on human female form to "get along" with all the English sailors. Will the Royal Navy ships save the cosmos from the giant flesh-eating Draesh? Will the decorum of proper British officers descend into the gutter thanks to the inviting female aliens? Seems there's never a dull moment for the displaced humans, with thundering ships' broadsides, help from some sharp shooting Yankees, and plenty of swordplay pitting high-born British officers against viciously stabbing crabmen. Whether you like historical fiction, fantasy, bawdy comedy, or just a wild crazy read, this is definitely a very unforgettable tale.

In this sequel to "Grapeshot and Demons", Captain Rodney Wyckham, Royal Navy, has built a trading center on the planet he's renamed Freeport. Alien merchants from distant systems come to his walled city, Port Wyckham, looking for trading opportunities in newly accessible worlds, and alien tourists flock to the various taverns that have made the town an intergalactic Las Vegas. But peaceful commerce and tourism is threatened by his old nemesis, Admiral Jarvis, who shows up with a French fleet aligned with the monstrous Draesh, the planet's previous owners. With help from the local human natives and their deadly effective fireballs, Wyckham emerges victorious, only to be attacked again by a British fleet demanding colonization rights for the British Empire. But the massive fleet, led by none other than the Duke of Wellington, the conqueror of Napoleon, is unprepared for battling Wyckham's alien allies, and the planet survives as an independent oasis of peace and free trade for aliens and humans alike. As in the first book, there's historically authentic action aplenty, tavern scenes reminiscent of the bar scene in Star Wars, many new and comical alien species, and wild amorous interactions with the holographic Fireflies. Just like the first book, this is one crazy, exciting, insanely creative story that will leave intrigued readers shaking their heads at what they've just read and looking for more.

Struggle for the Middle Sea

Struggle for the Middle Sea

The Mediterranean Sea was the most intensely contested body of water in World War II. As the maritime crossroads where Europe, Asia, and Africa meet, more major naval actions were fought in the Mediterranean than in the Atlantic or Pacific. Despite its importance, remarkably little has been written about the subject, and what exists is largely one-sided and outdated. This fresh study of the naval war in the Mediterranean analyses the actions and performances of the five major navies—British, Italian, French, German, and American—during the entire five-year campaign and objectively examines the national imperatives that drove each nation’s maritime strategy.Struggle for the Middle Sea sidesteps the myths that haunt this campaign, such as Great Britain enjoying a moral advantage over Italy, or the French being Germany’s puppet, or the North African campaign significantly contributing to the eventual Allied victory. The book documents how the British Royal Navy, despite brilliant victories, was bled white in a campaign with questionable strategic goals; how Italy followed its own coherent naval strategy, much to the frustration of its German ally; and how the Marine Nationale was the strength of the independent French state and how it fought the Allies—and rejected the Axis—to maintain that independence. Most World War II histories tell the story of the Mediterranean War from a limited national point of view. Other works also end the story in 1943. Struggle for the Middle Sea provides a complete history of the entire campaign from all perspectives and covers Germany’s largely unknown—and remarkably successful—struggle to employ sea power in the Mediterranean after the Italian armistice. The book’s perspective and depth of detail is unmatched by other works, and its fresh viewpoints, supported by extensive research in Italian and French sources, are certain to provoke controversy. Its lessons about coastal warfare, the use of the sea, and the difficulty of sea denial have particular application today.

Modern consumers are being bombarded with information from every angle. They can't absorb it all and, consequently, tune-out large portions of the information. Therefore, in order to gain their full attention, firms must find ways to surprise them during transactions. They must spawn mental script deviations for them. Research indicates that these script deviations can cement their loyalty. Therefore, Surprise! The Secret to Customer Loyalty in the Service Sector details how to create a surprise culture in a service firm. Any owner or manager competing in one of the many service sectors would benefit from implementing the information contained within these pages.

Clash of Fleets is an operational history that records every naval engagement fought between major surface warships during World War I. Much more than a catalog of combat facts, Clash of Fleets explores why battles occurred; how the different navies fought; and how combat advanced doctrine and affected the development and application of technology. The result is a holistic overview of the war at sea as it affected all nations and all theaters of war. A work of this scope is unprecedented.Organized into seven chapters, the authors first introduce the technology, weapons, ships, and the doctrine that governed naval warfare in 1914. The next five chapters explore each year of the war and are subdivided into sections corresponding to major geographic areas. This arrangement allows the massive sweep of action to be presented in a structured and easy to follow format that includes engagements fought by the Austro-Hungarian, British, French, German, Ottoman, and Russian Navies in the Adriatic, Aegean, Baltic, Black, Mediterranean, and North Seas as well as the Atlantic, India, and Pacific Oceans. The role of surface combat in the Great War is analyzed and these actions are compared to major naval wars before and after. In addition to providing detailed descriptions of actions in their historical perspectives, O’Hara and Heinz advance several themes, including the notion that World War I was a war of navies as much as a war of armies. They explain that surface combat had a major impact on all aspects of the naval war and on the course of the war in general. Finally, Clash of Fleets illustrates that systems developed in peace do not always work as expected in war, that some are not used as anticipated, and that others became unexpectedly important. There is much for today’s naval professional to consider in the naval conflict that occurred a century ago.

WHEN I STARTED TO COMPILE A BOOK OF 100 OR SO OF MY QUIRKY CARTOONS I HAD TO ASK MYSELF WHAT IS FUNNY TO ME AND WHAT CAN I PUT IN A BOOK WITHOUT OFFENDING ANYONE. OF COURSE POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS HUMOR CAME TO MIND FIRST. "JESUS DOING STAND UP" AND "MOSES COMING DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN WITH THE TABLETS" ARE TWO OF MY FAVORITES AND ARE COMPLETELY BENIGN. I DEFINITELY WILL PUT THOSE TWO CARTOONS IN THIS BOOK. IDEAS FOR CARTOONS COME FROM THINGS I HEAR THAT CAN BE UNDERSTOOD IN MORE THAN ONE WAY. DOUBLE ENTENDRES, ALLITERATION, PUNS AND RHYMES ARE ALL FODDER FOR MY CARTOONS. IF I CAN VISUALIZE THE IMAGE I DRAW IT. I DON'T KNOW WHAT SPARKS SOME OF THE CARTOONS SUCH AS THE VACUUM SERIES, THE FLY SERIES, THE WORM SERIES OR THE SLUG SERIES. THEY JUST COME UNBIDDEN AND ONCE THEY START I FOLLOW THE IDEAS UNTIL THEY STOP. THAT'S USUALLY ENOUGH TO KEEP ME OFF THE STREETS. SOME IDEAS ARE FUNNY RIGHT AWAY BUT THE IMAGE WON'T COME AS QUICKLY SO I KEEP THEM IN MY HEAD, (SOMETIMES FOR YEARS). IF THEY HANG IN THERE, AT SOME POINT, THEY COME OUT IN ONE FORM OR OTHER. THIS BOOK IS LAID OUT CHRONOLOGICALLY (YEARS 1979-2020). WHILE COMPLETING THIS BOOK, MORE IDEAS COME TO MIND AND THAT'S A GOOD THING.
