Between 1942 and 1945, 1,051 amphibious tank-landing ships were rapidly produced. These were anonymous vessels, slow and unwieldy, and in the words of one crewmember, they looked like bathtubs. At first, LSTs had a reputation of being expendable and of relatively low value, and so were bestowed another, less noble, nickname; "Large Slow Targets." Put into service to get troops and equipment ashore, the story of LST 479 is in some respects the story of all of these ships. Typical of all early LSTs, its crew on commissioning day, April 19, 1943, consisted of raw amateurs. But over the next 1,046 days, through collisions, accidental groundings, navigational errors, and lots of mechanical breakdowns, the 479 crew became sailors. Displaying heroism and ingenuity, they rescued the crew of a crippled landing craft during an Alaskan storm, battled fires aboard a burning LST hit by kamikazes, and fought off air attacks on the way to Makin and Guam, at Saipan, in the Philippines and around Okinawa. This LST crew became the embodiment of the Navy's 2018 recruiting slogan: "Forged by the Sea." In gripping, meticulously researched, "you are there" fashion, author William A. Gay, recounts the fascinating history of the 479's seven Pacific campaigns; from the day-to-day life of the men aboard her, to their terrifying encounters in battle as they delivered "unseen body blows" to the enemy that helped win the war in the Pacific....

The Politicization of Russian Orthodoxy

The Politicization of Russian Orthodoxy

This book analyzes the ideologies of politicized Orthodox Christianity in today Russia including fundamentalism, pan-Slavism, neo-Eurasianism, Orthodox communism and nationalism. Apart from textual analysis, the volume provides a description of the specific subculture of political Orthodoxy, i.e. its language, symbols, art, mass media, hangouts and dress-code. This study represents the first scholarly examination of these topics. Unlike other publications on the politicization of Orthodoxy, it is focused not on the political ambitions of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), but on political movements ideologically based on their own interpretations of the Orthodox doctrine, often contravening the canonical version. The book demonstrates that the "political Orthodox" or "Orthodox patriots" are a specific branch of believers who frequently do not practice Orthodoxy properly, inventing, instead, their own quasi-Orthodox rituals. The study shows that the community of the political Orthodox is guided less by the ROC, than by religiously oriented lay intellectuals who are briefly introduced. Finally, the volume demonstrates that, even in the absence of significant electoral achievements, some religio-political Orthodox movements-namely, fundamentalists and nationalists-have been able to gain public support at the grassroots level. They have been able to infiltrate larger and more moderate political organizations thus contributing to a general "Orthodoxization" of Russian political discourse.

"Our Gay Wedding Day" is a lyrical look at a fictitious gay male couple who decide to get married. The amazing part of this photo album is that all of the approx. 180 photographs were created in miniature using action figures and dolls. Countless hours of time went into building sets, making costumes and props, then staging and shooting the photographs. It all begins the morning of the wedding and follows the couple throughout the day. In a broader political sense, "Our Gay Wedding Day" celebrates diversity. Conceptually it is a visual journal of gay culture and the natural order of things from a gay perspective: boys with boys, and girls with girls. It provides the viewer with a refreshing sentiment regarding marriage.
