This book explores the influence of Enlightenment and Romantic-era theories of the mind on the writings of Godwin and Shelley and examines the ways in which these writers use their fiction to explore such psychological phenomena as ruling passions, madness, the therapeutic value of confessions (both spoken and written), and the significance of dreams. Unlike most studies of Godwin and Shelley, it does not privilege their masterworks—for the most part, it focuses on their lesser-known writings. Brewer also considers the works of other Romantic-era writers, as well as the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century philosophical and medical theories that informed Godwin’s and Shelley’s presentations of mental states and types of behavior.

The impact of his social theories was acknowledged by almost every significant literary figure in Britain for the next quarter-century, and his influence endured much longer in Europe. He married Mary Wollstonecraft, the early advocate of women's rights, and was the father of Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein. All of his letters are published for the first time in this edition. The first volume (1778-1797) includes scores of texts newly transcribed from the original manuscripts and given scholarly annotation for the first time. The letters trace the development of Godwin's personality from his background in English religious nonconformity, through his early struggle for recognition as a gifted writer, to his years of fame in the 1790s. They illuminate his most celebrated works, An Enquiry concerning Political Justice (1793) and the novel Caleb Williams (1794); his intervention in the treason trials of 1794; and his relations with publishers. They reveal his intellectual and emotional mentorship of a succession of creative men and women. Godwin was not only a speculative philosopher but also a risk-taking entrepreneur. The letters show him responding to changes in public mood, seeking compromise in his philosophical commitments, and remaking himself as the author of novels, plays, biographies, and children's books. They trace the fragmentation of his intellectual circle of the 1790s and the building of new alliances. They include an eye-witness account of the condition of Ireland on the eve of the 1800 Act of Union. This is the fourth volume of the landmark scholarly edition of William Godwin's letters, and the largest in the series. It contains 404 letters with full scholarly apparatus. Volume IV shows Godwin in his prime, reverting to form as a prolific man of letters, seeking to foster public virtue. He goes back to his roots as a radical polymath, grappling with the enduring questions of justice, inequality, and social improvement that had fired his intellect since the 1790s. Volume I reflected the origins and impact of Godwin's An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, and showed him at the height of his reputation. Volume II showed him responding to changes in public opinion, modifying his philosophical commitments, and remaking himself as the author of novels, plays, and biographies. Volume III (in preparation) highlights his career as an author and publisher of children's books. The letters in Volume IV trace the resurgence of Godwin's reputation as he published a sequence of major works intervening in urgent public debates of the day: the population question, the nature of civic education, and the legacy of the seventeenth-century English republican experiment. They provide an eyewitness view of the condition of post-Waterloo Britain and the years of political unrest leading up to the legislative reforms of 1828-32. Many letters track Godwin's research activities and record his dealings with pre-eminent publishers, including Archibald Constable and Henry Colburn. Other letters show him corresponding with a new generation of critics and acolytes. They transform understanding of his complicated family life, notably his relations with his daughter Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and his son-in-law Percy Bysshe Shelley. They testify to Godwin's powers of Stoic endurance in the face of misfortunes: financial insecurity, which culminated in bankruptcy, and a series of personal tragedies.
