Workforce Development Networks explains why and how the need for such customized, networked mediation has become so acute in America, especially for residents of low income communities of color, and why conventional approaches continue to fail. This book explores how labor markets are changingùjobs are being created, but they pay less, and job security is declining, as is the payoff for experience and seniority. Strategies for Quasi-Monte Carlo builds a framework to design and analyze strategies for randomized quasi-Monte Carlo (RQMC). One key to efficient simulation using RQMC is to structure problems to reveal a small set of important variables, their number being the effective dimension, while the other variables collectively are relatively insignificant. Another is smoothing. The book provides many illustrations of both keys, in particular for problems involving Poisson processes or Gaussian processes. RQMC beats grids by a huge margin. With low effective dimension, RQMC is an order-of-magnitude more efficient than standard Monte Carlo. With, in addition, certain smoothness - perhaps induced - RQMC is an order-of-magnitude more efficient than deterministic QMC. Unlike the latter, RQMC permits error estimation via the central limit theorem. For random-dimensional problems, such as occur with discrete-event simulation, RQMC gets judiciously combined with standard Monte Carlo to keep memory requirements bounded. This monograph has been designed to appeal to a diverse audience, including those with applications in queueing, operations research, computational finance, mathematical programming, partial differential equations (both deterministic and stochastic), and particle transport, as well as to probabilists and statisticians wanting to know how to apply effectively a powerful tool, and to those interested in numerical integration or optimization in their own right. It recognizes that the heart of practical application is algorithms, so pseudocodes appear throughout the book. While not primarily a textbook, it is suitable as a supplementary text for certain graduate courses. As a reference, it belongs on the shelf of everyone with a serious interest in improving simulation efficiency. Moreover, it will be a valuable reference to all those individuals interested in improving simulation efficiency with more than incremental increases.

Tip-of-the-Tongue experiences are one of those illusive oddities of human cognition. Like slips of the tongue, déjà vu, and visual illusions, TOTs dazzle us with their subjective strength, yet, at the same time, puzzle us with our frustrating inability to retrieve the desired word. This book discusses what little is known about TOTs and speculates about much of the rest of the riddle. Cognitive psychologists know a lot about processes but generally avoid issues of conscious experience and phenomenology. Because the larger goal of this book is to relate the TOT experience to the study of human phenomenology, it goes beyond the conventional cognitive psychology question, "What causes tip-of-the-tongue experiences?" to ask, "Why do we experience TOTs at all?"

Historians have given a great deal of attention to the lives and experiences of Civil War soldiers, but surprisingly little is known about navy sailors who participated in the conflict. Michael J. Bennett remedies the longstanding neglect of Civil War seamen in this comprehensive assessment of the experience of common Union sailors from 1861 to 1865.To resurrect the voices of the ""Union Jacks,"" Bennett combed sailors' diaries, letters, and journals. He finds that the sailors differed from their counterparts in the army in many ways. They tended to be a rougher bunch of men than the regular soldiers, drinking and fighting excessively. Those who were not foreign-born, escaped slaves, or unemployed at the time they enlisted often hailed from the urban working class rather than from rural farms and towns. In addition, most sailors enlisted for pragmatic rather than ideological reasons.Bennett's examination provides a look into the everyday lives of sailors and illuminates where they came from, why they enlisted, and how their origins shaped their service. By showing how these Union sailors lived and fought on the sea, Bennett brings an important new perspective to our understanding of the Civil War.

Historical study has traditionally been built around the placement of the human at the center of inquiry. The de-stabilized concepts of the human in contemporary thought challenge this configuration. However, the ways in which these challenges provoke new historical perspectives both expand and enrich historical study but are also weak and vulnerable in their concept of the human, lacking or omitting something valuable in our self-understanding. A Personalist Philosophy of History argues for a robust concept of personhood in our experience of the past as a way to resolve this conflict.Focused on those who know history, rather than on the abstract properties of knowledge, it extends the moral agency of persons into non-human, trans-human, and deep history domains. It describes an approach to moral life through historical experience and study, rather than through abstractions. And it describes a kind of historiography that matches factual accuracy to both the constructed nature of understanding and to unavoidable moral purpose.

The Ricci flow uses methods from analysis to study the geometry and topology of manifolds. With the third part of their volume on techniques and applications of the theory, the authors give a presentation of Hamilton's Ricci flow for graduate students and mathematicians interested in working in the subject, with an emphasis on the geometric and analytic aspects.The topics include Perelman's entropy functional, point picking methods, aspects of Perelman's theory of ? -solutions including the ? -gap theorem, compactness theorem and derivative estimates, Perelman's pseudolocality theorem, and aspects of the heat equation with respect to static and evolving metrics related to Ricci flow.
