Teaching communication criticism is an art, an aesthetic performance, a skill, and a practice that must be adapted to the specific and unique personalities of the students within a classroom. In publication for over four decades, Introduction to Communication Criticism: Methods, Systems Analysis, and Societal Transformations explores the degree to which methods of communication criticism can be used to enhance the conceptual power and understandings of students, motivates them to explore the nature of symbol-using on their own, and presents how they can improve their critical communication and symbol-using skills. No longer an anthology of readings, the new edition of Introduction to Communication Criticism is a full-featured textbook. This metamorphosis of delivery and content includes student friendly pedagogical features such as Chapter objectives, key terms, exercises, and more.Featuring new authors James W. Chesebro, David T. McMahan, and Dale A. Bertelsen, Introduction to Communication Criticism:Presents the basic vocabulary and principles of communication criticism. Discusses three orientations (Communication methods, societal transformations, and communication systems) to communication criticism.Examines the role of communication technologies as a relatively new mode of criticism and speculates about the future of communication criticism.

Enjoy learning a key technology. Undergraduates and beginning graduates in both first and second simulation courses have responded positively to the approach taken in this text, which illustrates simulation principles using the popular Simio product. This full color version takes full advantage of the color in the animation and screenshots. Content: This textbook explains how to use simulation to make better business decisions in application domains from healthcare to mining, heavy manufacturing to supply chains, and everything in between. It is written to help both technical and non-technical users better understand the concepts and usefulness of simulation. It can be used in a classroom environment or in support of independent study. Modern software makes simulation more useful and accessible than ever and this book illustrates simulation concepts with Simio, a leader in simulation software. Author Statement: This book can serve as the primary text in first and second courses in simulation at both the undergraduate and beginning-graduate levels. It is written in an accessible tutorial-style writing approach centered on specific examples rather than general concepts, and covers a variety of applications including an international flavor. Our experience has shown that these characteristics make the text easier to read and absorb, as well as appealing to students from many different cultural and applications backgrounds. A first simulation course would probably cover Chapter 1 through 8 thoroughly, and likely Chapters 9 and 10, particularly for upper class or graduate level students. For a second simulation course, it might work to skip or quickly review Chapters 1-3 and 6, thoroughly cover all other chapters up to Chapter 11, and use Chapters 12, 13, and Appendix A as reinforcing assignments. The text or components of it could also support a simulation module of a few weeks within a larger survey course in programs without a stand-alone simulation course (e.g., MBA). For a simulation module that's part of a larger survey course, we recommend concentrating on Chapters 1, 4, and 5, and then perhaps lightly touch on Chapters 7 and 8. The extensibility introduced in Chapter 11 could provide some interesting project work for a graduate student with some programming background, as it could be easily linked to other research topics. Likewise, Chapter 13 could be used as the lead-in to some advanced study or research in the latest techniques in simulation-based planning and scheduling. Appendix A could be used as student assignments or challenge problems in an applications-focused or independent study course. Supplemental course material is also available on-line. Fourth Edition Changes: The new fourth edition is written for Simio Version 9 and later, the latest in simulation technology. In this edition, we added a new chapter on Miscellaneous Modeling Topics including sections on Searching, Balking and Reneging, Task Sequences, Event-based Decision logic, the Flow Library, the Extras Library, and Experimentation using Parallel and Cloud Processing. We also updated and promoted our former appendix on Simulation-based Scheduling to a chapter. And we added a new appendix referencing previous Simio Student Simulation Competition problems. In addition, the coverage of animation, input analysis and output analysis has been significantly expanded. End-of-chapter problems have been improved and expanded, and we have incorporated many reader suggestions. We have reorganized the material for an improved flow, and have updates throughout the book for many of the new Simio features recently added such as the properties window, and GIS mapping support.

The diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a heterogeneous group of clonal hematopoietic disorders, is being made with increasing frequency over the past decade owing to increased recognition, improved understanding, and an aging population. This book, completely updated since the first edition, summarizes in a concise and focused way the current knowledge of all aspects of MDS. Clinical presentation, etiology, epidemiology, molecular biology, classification, and staging are all discussed. Clear guidance is provided on diagnosis and differential diagnosis, and treatment strategies are explained in detail, including administration of hematopoietic growth factors, biologically based treatment, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and supportive care. Additional chapter is devoted to MDS in children. This practically oriented book will be of value to a broad spectrum of students and practitioners in the field.

"Rarely have I come across a book that so quickly provoked me to re-examine my own classroom behavior. There is no place to hide in this careful scrutiny of the teacher as crucial player in the daily morality tale that becomes the story of school life." -- Vivian Gussin Paley, teacher, University of Chicago Laboratory SchoolsThis book takes the reader on an eye-opening journey through a variety of elementary and high school classrooms, highlighting the moral significance of all that transpires there. Drawing on the results of a two-and-a-half year study, the authors examine the ways in which moral considerations permeate the everyday life of classrooms. In addition to providing teachers and teacher educators with a new framework for looking at and thinking about the moral dimensions of schooling, the authors also offer specific suggestions about how to look at classroom events from a moral perspective.ContentsOne. North From Texas: Incidents In The Early Life Of A Range Cowman In Texas, Dakota, And Wyoming, 1852-1883 is a memoir written by James Clay Shaw. The book is a first-hand account of Shaw's experiences as a cowboy in the late 19th century, covering his life from his early years in Texas to his time working in the Dakotas and Wyoming. Shaw's memoir provides a detailed and vivid portrait of the life of a cowboy during this period, including descriptions of cattle drives, roundups, and encounters with Native Americans. He also offers insights into the social and economic conditions of the time, as well as the challenges and dangers of life on the range. The book is written in a straightforward and engaging style, with a focus on storytelling and personal anecdotes. It offers a unique perspective on the history of the American West, and will appeal to anyone interested in cowboy culture, western history, or the experiences of those who helped shape this iconic period in American history. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Coupled Boundary and Finite Element Methods for the Solution of the Dynamic Fluid-Structure Interaction Problem

This text considers the problem of the dynamic fluid-structure interaction between a finite elastic structure and the acoustic field in an unbounded fluid-filled exterior domain. The exterior acoustic field is modelled through a boundary integral equation over the structure surface. However, the classical boundary integral equation formulations of this problem either have no solutions or do not have unique solutions at certain characteristic frequencies (which depend on the surface geometry) and it is necessary to employ modified boundary integral equation formulations which are valid for all frequencies. The particular approach adopted here involves an arbitrary coupling parameter and the effect that this parameter has on the stability and accuracy of the numerical method used to solve the integral equation is examined. The boundary integral analysis of the exterior acoustic problem is coupled with a finite element analysis of the elastic structure in order to investigate the interaction between the dynamic behaviour of the structure and the associated acoustic field. Recently there has been some controversy over whether or not the coupled problem also suffers from the non-uniqueness problems associated with the classical integral equation formulations of the exterior acoustic problem. This question is resolved by demonstrating that .the solution to the coupled problem is not unique at the characteristic frequencies and that it is necessary to employ an integral equation formulation valid for all frequencies.

Assesses the homeland security implications of publicly available geospatial data and information. Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, many agencies within the federal government began restricting some of their publicly available geospatial data and information from such sources as the World Wide Web. As time passes, however, decisionmakers have begun to ask whether and how such information specifically helps potential attackers, including terrorists, to select U.S. homeland sites and prepare for better attacks. The research detailed in this book aims to assist decisionmakers tasked with the responsibility of choosing which geospatial information to make available and which to restrict.

Between the last battle fought entirely under oars in 1571 and the first fought entirely under steam in 1866, naval warfare in the Middle Seas and adjacent Atlantic waters was dominated by the sailing warship. This exploration of that distinct period in military history begins with an overview of the galley warfare that dominated the Mediterranean for millennia and a discussion of the technological developments, including the sail and the cannon, which led to the galley's demise. Subsequent chapters discuss the role of sailing ships in every major conflict on the Mediterranean from the 16th century Eighty Years War to the late 19th century Austro-Prussian-Italian War. In addition to the major battles, the book also highlights smaller encounters between single ships or light squadrons, important conflicts often overlooked in naval histories.
