If you went to school in the United States, you probably learned about the Civil War - but this book won't be like what you learned in history class. Maybe your teacher took the controversial stand that the Civil War was all about states' rights... or maybe you learned all about the horrors slavery, but never quite figured out why things didn't get better after the war ended. If you didn't go to school in the United States, things are even more confusing. When the media is full of references to the Confederate flag, the legacy of slavery, and poverty in the American South, you might have a vague sense that things are bad because of the Civil War... but why? Why does a war that happened over a hundred and fifty years ago still cast a shadow over the United States? This book will tell you why. It will lead you, step-by-step, through the causes of the Civil War, and the effects. But unlike your high school history teacher, it won't put you to sleep with long-winded biographies and lists of dates. The names you'll learn are the big players, the ones with big personalities, who made big differences. In just a few minutes a day, you can read bite-sized stories from the Civil War - quick, easy explanations to guide you through the main points, with just enough scary, surprising, or just plain strange facts to keep you coming back for more. Each chapter ends with a bonus helping of trivia and some quick questions to test your knowledge. By the time you're finished, you'll know all the facts your history teacher never taught you - from who said slavery was a "positive good" (and why they thought that), to who dressed up in women's clothing to escape from Union soldiers.

This is the second book written and published by Dwayne A. Gray, who is also the author of, "Mirror of Poems: Reflections"; his first book published 2017. This book however, is what he calls a (Callaloo) of poetry as is said in the Caribbean, or (Mixture) of poetry. These poems do not remain in any certain category. Instead, they express many different emotions and tell the taught lessons of many experiences converted here to poetry. Unlike the first book however, the poems in this book are less organized, or assigned to certain areas; hence the term (Callaloo), which mean, mixed up as was mentioned. Instead, they are spread sporadically throughout. Find yourself in this kaleidoscope of colorful poems that almost anyone can relate to, where the only colors of interest are the ones of the heart; the emotional colors that everyone possess regardless of Caste or Creed. We share different outer shades but inside our colors are the same, surfacing at different moments. Find your colors daily as they surface in "Poeticolors" and enjoy.

"I remember thinking to myself, as I said goodbye to my friends and walked home through the dimly lit backstreets, that the past comes back to haunt everybody sooner or later." In this finely honed collection of short fiction, Dwayne Brenna creates a series of unforgettable characters, from academics and street people to musicians, movie stars, videogame players and their mothers, cooks, actors, boxers, and even a parrot, and, with compassion and affection (and sometimes laugh-out-loud humour) tests their mettle in a variety of fascinating locations, from Saskatoon to Victoria to Libya to Los Angeles to London to Hawaii and beyond, with familiar and homey details and a fidelity to mood and atmosphere.Along the way, Brenna tackles a wide selection of conflicts and social ills--good versus evil, scruples and the lack of them, doing or not doing the "right thing," yielding or not yielding to temptations, and the many other struggles of the human heart--all without being didactic or preachy, but simply by addressing the very human circumstances his characters find themselves in, and how they manage to escape, or not escape, the predicaments arising because of who they are, who they've been, and who they could be.

The rise of Islamophobia in Western nations, particularly the United States, has become quite troublesome over the past five years (Ott, 2018). Assaults, hate crimes, and discrimination have always been a difficult reality for many Muslims in Western nations. Still, it has sharply risen in the past half a decade, especially in the United States. Unfortunately, the increase in Islamophobia parallels the rise of nationalist political parties with authoritarian sympathies (Bieber, 2018). Trends have been similar in most industrialized Western nations, intertwined with rising wealth inequality, political disenfranchisement, and the erosion of trust in social institutions, all of which have made the opportunity for authoritarian governments who explicitly target Middle Eastern and Muslim peoples.
