Invisible Now: Bob Dylan in the 1960s

Invisible Now: Bob Dylan in the 1960s

John Hughes

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2013
sidottu
Invisible Now describes Bob Dylan's transformative inspiration as artist and cultural figure in the 1960s. Hughes identifies Dylan's creativity with an essential imaginative dynamic, as the singer perpetually departs from a former state of inexpression in pursuit of new, as yet unknown, powers of self-renewal. This motif of temporal self-division is taken as corresponding to what Dylan later referred to as an artistic project of 'continual becoming', and is explored in the book as a creative and ethical principle that underlies many facets of Dylan's appeal. Accordingly, the book combines close discussions of Dylan's mercurial art with related discussions of his humour, voice, photographs, and self-presentation, as well as with the singularities of particular performances. The result is a nuanced account of Dylan's creativity that allows us to understand more closely the nature of Dylan's art, and its links with American culture.

Bob Dylan has constantly reinvented the persona known as “Bob Dylan,” renewing the performance possibilities inherent in his songs, from acoustic folk, to electric rock and a late, hybrid style which even hints at so-called world music and Latin American tones. Then in 2016, his achievements outside of performance – as a songwriter – were acknowledged when he was awarded the Nobel Literature Prize. Dylan has never ceased to broaden the range of his creative identity, taking in painting, film, acting and prose writing, as well as advertising and even own-brand commercial production. The book highlights how Dylan has brought his persona(e) to different art forms and cultural arenas, and how they in turn have also created these personae. This volume consists of multidisciplinary essays written by cultural historians, musicologists, literary academics and film experts, including contributions by critics Christopher Ricks and Nina Goss. Together, the essays reveal Dylan’s continuing artistic development and self-fashioning, as well as the making of a certain legitimized Dylan through critical and public recognition in the new millennium.

Blonde On The Tracks: Dylan's Discography re-imagined and re-examined

Anyone who has done more than a cursory look at Bob Dylan's entire discography knows that there's a "Good Bob" and a "Bad Bob." While "Good Bob" is an understandably influential musical genius, the weird failures of "Bad Bob" may be a more fascinating subject matter. What if a true fan of "Bad Bob" were going to take a deep dive into the collective albums of Dylan? Someone who prefers "Christmas In The Heart" and "Self-Portrait" to "Blonde On Blonde" or "Blood On The Tracks"? What would such a person think of the world-famous material by "Good Bob"? How would they re-organise Dylan's original albums to fit their own twisted preferences?BLONDE ON THE TRACKS attempts to do just that with reviews of 675] songs and outtakes from Bob's entire career, as well as suggestions for how to make each record weirder, more interesting, or just "bad." Most Dylan fans may be outraged by some of the opinions within; but if the can get past their initial revulsion, they may find a new appreciation for some of Bob Dylan's more notable failures ... or at least something new to think (and argue) about.SCOT P. LIVINGSTON is not a Dylan apologist who thinks that Bob can do no wrong. Nor is he a simple contrarian just making outrageous statements to deliberately annoy Dylan die-hards. Scot is just a big fan of "Bad Bob."
