A Visit to Mount Athos: November 1944

A Visit to Mount Athos: November 1944

Seventy years ago, when the Second World War came to an end, Mount Athos monks had rescued and sheltered many Allied Troops, who were left behind during the disorderly retreat of their forces in front of the Nazi onslaught.Only a year after the Nazi's defeat -which was triggered significantly by the Greek resistance delaying the Germans- the first Allied Government that organised the dispatch of Credential letters, was the most distant one. New Zealand, not only felt obliged to send citations to the Greek Monasteries and Municipalities all around Greece, but decided to actually sent a team of three officials, representing both the NZ Army and their Government. These citations were handed over personally, as an expression of gratitude, for the Holy Mountain's vital role in protecting the New Zealand soldiers. One of the few unpublished experiences and descriptions of foreign representatives in the Athonite peninsula, is this one by Peter McIntyre, not only a well trained soldier, but a highly cultured, adventurous and recognised artist. McIntyre recorded his unique experience in an unplayed radio talk on New Years Day, 1945 for the Radio of New Zealand that was discovered recently by Peter Howorth, together with all the photos taken during the visit, that are the main theme of this booklet.Eventually, the 1944 New Zealand visit to Mount Athos regained its multidimensional and historical significance. This booklet, also, includes a Foreword about Mount Athos from the Publisher, a Preface by Peter Howard, and a short biography of Peter McIntyre.A collectable piece of history

In the north of England there was a put-down for women with ideas above their station `Who do you think you are? Lady Docker?' Ccarcely a day went by when Norah Docker didn't dominate the newspapers. Born over a butcher's shop in Derby, Norah she would enjoy a level of fame second only to a young Queen Elizabeth but it couldn't last..

This book, first published in 1984, examines France’s independent nuclear weapons programme of the 1980s alongside the French peace movement, which was almost totally absent – in contrast to the peace protests of the US and the rest of Europe. This book analyses this unusual pattern of defence and dissent, and assesses its likely development. It looks at the evolvement of French post-war defence policy, and discusses the French peace movement, attempting to explain why it was so weak.

Afropean Female Selves: Migration and Language in the Life Writing of Fatou Diome and Igiaba Scego examines the corpus of writing of two contemporary female authors. Both writers are of African descent, live in Europe and write about lives across Europe and Africa in different languages (French and Italian). Their work involves episodes from their lived experience and complicates Western understandings of life writing and autobiography. As Hogarth shows in this study, the works of Diome and Scego encapsulate the new and complex identities of contemporary "Afropeans." As an identity coined and used frequently by prominent authors and critics across Europe, Africa and North America, the notion of "Afropean" is at the cutting edge of cultural analyses today. Yet each writer occupies unique and different positions within this debated category. While Scego is a "post-migratory subject" in postcolonial Europe, Diome is an African writer who has migrated to Europe in her adult life. This book examines the different trajectories and packaging of these two specific postcolonial writers in the Francophone and Italophone contexts, pointing out how and where each author practices life writing strategies and scrutinizing the trend that emphasizes the life writing, autofictional, or autoethnographic strategies of African diasporic writers. Afropean Female Selves offers a comparative study across two languages of a notion that has so far been explored mainly in English. It explores the contours of this new discursive category and positions it in regard to other notions of Afrodiasporic identity, such as Afropolitan and Afro-European.

The Philharmonic Society ('Royal' from 1912) is one of the oldest music societies in the world. Founded in 1813 to provide regular concerts of new music in London, it is famous for its commission of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. This detailed account by George Hogarth, music journalist and Secretary to the Society between 1850 and 1864, takes us from the inaugural concert in March 1813 including works by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven to plans for the golden jubilee concert. Noteworthy performances in these first fifty years included the UK premiere of Beethoven's Ninth in 1825, Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony in 1833 and a cornucopia of works by composers such as Wagner, Berlioz and Weber whose music now forms the core repertoire of the nineteenth century. Appendices provide extracts of letters from Mendelssohn, details of works by English composers performed at Society concerts, and lists of performers, Society members, Honorary Members and Patrons.

George Hogarth (1783–1870), music critic and journalist, is also remembered as a friend of Sir Walter Scott and the father-in-law of Charles Dickens. His lengthy writing career included posts as music critic with The Harmonicon, the Morning Chronicle (where he first met Dickens), the Evening Chronicle (which he co-edited), and the Daily News. He also served as music critic for The Illustrated London News and was secretary to the Philharmonic Society between 1850 and 1864. His account of the first fifty years of the Society has also been reissued in this series. The present work, first published in 1835, is his lively history of music from ancient to modern times, aimed squarely at the general reader. It is couched in 'simple and perspicuous language, avoiding technical phraseology and abstruse discussions'. The final chapter presents an invaluable first-hand account of contemporary music and musical life in England.
