Complex plasmas are dusty plasmas in which the density and electric charges of the dust grains are sufficiently high to induce long-range grain-grain interactions, as well as strong absorption of charged-plasma components. Together with the sources replenishing the plasma such systems form a highly dissipative thermodynamically open system that exhibits many features of collective behaviour generally found in complex systems. Most notably among them are self-organized patterns such as plasma crystals, plasma clusters, dust stars and further spectacular new structures. Beyond their intrinsic scientific interest, the study of complex plasmas grows in importance in a great variety of fields, ranging from space-plasma sciences to applied fields such as plasma processing, thin-film deposition and even the production of computer chips by plasma etching, in which strongly interacting clouds of complex plasmas can cause major contamination of the final product. Intended as first introductory but comprehensive survey of this rapidly emerging field, the present book addresses postgraduate students as well as specialist and nonspecialist researchers with a general background in either plasma physics, space sciences or the physics of complex systems.

Die rationelle Energieverwendung im Bereich wärmetechnischer Systeme hat im mittel­ europäischen Raum einen hohen Stellenwert, da bei der überwiegenden Anzahl der Haus­ halte und Gewerbebetriebe der Energieverbrauch zur Wärmeerzeugung den größten An­ teil am Gesamtenergieverbrauch hat. Das Ziel des vorliegenden Bandes ist es, dem Leser die Vorgehensweise 'zur Beurteilung wärmetechnischer Systeme und energiesparender Maßnahmen zu vermitteln. Schwerpunktmäßig werden die Heiz- und Raumlufttechnik im Umfeld des Menschen behandelt, während das Gebiet der Prozeßwärme für die indu­ strielle Anwendung aus Gründen des Umfanges nur ansatzweise erörtert werden konnte. Der Anspruch dieses Buches liegt auf einer Ebene, welche bewußt nicht die Einzellösung hervorhebt, da sich das Optimum eines Gesamtsystems noch längst nicht einstellen muß, wenn die Teilsysteme optimiert sind. Das Verständnis der Verzahntheit des vorliegenden Gebietes mit anderen Fachgebieten ist deshalb eine wesentliche Voraussetzung für ko­ ordinierte Maßnahmen zur rationellen Energieverwendung. Diesem Umstand wird durch zahlreiche qualitative Systembetrachtungen und Zahlenbeispiele Rechnung getragen. Im ersten Abschnitt werden die speziellen Grundlagen der Heiz- und Raumlufttechnik be­ handelt. Dazu zählen Kenntnisse über technische Funktionsabläufe und die Behaglich­ keitsanforderungen des Menschen, zu deren Aufrechterhaltung diese Anlagen gebaut werden. Anlagentechnische Maßnahmen zur Energieeinsparung müssen sich immer an der Erfüllung der Behaglichkeitsanforderungen messen lassen. Weiterhin gehört es auch zu einer wirkungsvollen Energieberatung, Maßnahmen an gebäudetechnischen Anlagen als Teilmaßnahme am Gesamtsystem Gebäude zu verstehen, weil durch den Umfang derSystemverbesserung (energetisch-ökonomisch) letztlich die Rangfolge der durchzuführen­ den Maßnahmen bestimmt wird.

In 1890, just a few years after the discovery of the chromosomes, David Paul Hansemann, a pathologist-in-training with the famous Rudolph Virchow in Berlin, produced a theory of the pathogenesis of cancer involving the key current concept: that the first change which occurs in cancer is an alteration of the hereditary material of a normal cell at the site where the cancerous process begins. In the process of linking cancer to chromosomal material, Hansemann coined the terms "anaplasia" and "dedifferentiation". These terms have remained the basis of descriptive terms concerning the microscopical appearances of tumours ever since. Nevertheless, despite the popularity of his terminology, Hansemann's ideas were attacked vigorously by almost all proponents of rival theories of the nature of cancer. Partly due to these disputes during his life-time, and partly due to other factors, interest in von Hansemann's ideas diminished during the twentieth century and his works are rarely mentioned today. This book presents translations of all the relevant German texts, and analyses the background and context of Hansemann's theories as well as the reasons why he was almost completely forgotten. It shows that some of Hansemann’s ideas may still be relevant to cancer research today, and that he deserves to be remembered in relation to cancer as Vordenker unter den führenden Denkern seiner Zeit - The foremost of the leading thinkers of his time.

The 1988 Summer School on New Aspects of Nuclear Dynamics took place in the style that by now has become a tradition: a series of lectures by well known scientists on modem topics of nuclear physics, where special emphasis is placed on the didactic aspects of the lectures. In the past few years, we have witnessed a rapid evolution of the field of nuclear physics towards novel directions of research. This development is accompanied by the construction of some of the largest experimental facilities ever built for nuclear research. The subjects covered by the Summer School focussed on two main issues currently under active investigation and which will be pursued with the new facilities: the transition from nucleonic to quark degrees of freedom in the decription of nuclear reactions, and the behavior of nuclear matter as one approaches extreme densities and temperatures. These topics in many respects go beyond traditional nuclear physics and the speakers therefore also included high energy physicists. From the response of the participants it was clear that the program of the school filled a gap in the curriculum of many students. We wish to thank all the speakers for their well organized lectures, which were nicely geared to the level of the school, and for spending extra time on problem sessions and extensive discussions. The organization of this Summer School was made possible by substantial support from the Science Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
