Toby wasn't ready to die in 2008-and wake up in 2088. 2088 wasn't ready for Toby either. Gen-X computer hacker Toby is a classic American: impulsive, irreverent, intelligent, and inventive. And, after a silly accident in 2008, he can add "inanimate" to the list-because Toby is dead. But only for a while. Eighty years later, medical science has advanced enough to bring Toby back to life. Welcome to Southern California, 2088. The skies are clean, but the rich-poor social gulf has widened. The biggest industries are entertainment and the prison system. Taxes have been cut - because the main source of government revenue is the confiscation of property. Many new, designer recreational drugs are legal, and many other drugs are mandatory. And while the US leads the world in cosmetic surgery, in most technologies America lags far behind... America has changed. Toby hasn't. And in the collision between America 2008 and America 2088, Toby brings the system to its knees-just by being his freedom loving, problem solving self. Read now and join Toby in Tomorrowville for love, sex, politics, and cyberspace-plus the occasional turbocharged wheelchair and robotic rat.
The Politics of Maps

The Politics of Maps

The land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan Valley has been one of the most disputed territories in history. Since the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, Palestinians and Israelis have each sought claim to the national identity of the land through various martial, social, and scientific tactics, but no method has offered as much legitimacy and national controversy as that of the map. The Politics of Maps delves beneath the battlefield to unearth the cartographic strife behind the Israel/Palestine conflict. Blending science and technology studies, sociology, and geography with a host of archival material, in-depth interviews and ethnographies, this book explores how the geographical sciences came to be entangled with the politics, territorial claim-making, and nation-state building of Israel/Palestine. Chapters chart the cartographic history of the region, from the introduction of Western scientific and legal paradigms that seemingly legitimized and depoliticized new land regimes to the rise of new mapping technologies and software that expanded access to cartography into the public sphere. Maps produced by various sectors like the "peace camps" or the Jewish community enhanced national belonging, while others, like that of the Green Line, served largely to divide. The stories of Israel's many boundaries reveal that there is no absolute, technocratic solution to boundary-making. As boundaries continue to be controversial and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains intractable and unresolved,The Politics of Maps uses nationally-based cartographic discourses to provide insight into the complexity, fissures, and frictions within internal political debates, illuminating the persistent power of the nation-state as a framework for forging identities, citizens, and alliances.

Arab entrepreneurs in Israel form part of a traditional, yet peripheral, ethnic minority attempting to integrate into Israel's larger economy. This study, based on extensive fieldwork, focuses on the obstacles that these Arab entrepreneurs and new industrialists must overcome in their development towards industrialization. The research exposes a highly flexible entrepreneurial culture making use of a limited set of opportunities and resources. The work makes a strong contribution to comparative cross-cultural research and theoretical formulations on issues of ethnic entrepreneurship.
The Counter-Creationism Handbook

The Counter-Creationism Handbook

Mark A. Isaak

Those opposed to the teaching of evolution often make well-rehearsed claims about the science that sound, to the layperson, powerful and convincing. And many people who support the teaching of evolution—students, teachers, parents, administrators—do not have the background to respond. They know that scientists have pretty thoroughly dismantled these arguments, but they don't have a handy way of responding to these attacks. The Counter-Creationism Handbook is a one-stop resource for addressing over 400 of the most prevalent claims made by creationists. Each claim is followed by a succinct and scientifically valid rebuttal, and the book includes print and on-line resources for further reading and information.Whether you are a preservice, inservice or veteran teacher, through the inquiry and reflection of teacher research you can learn about your practice and your students and gain a deeper understanding of the potential that the inquiry process has to support powerful student learning. This useful resource covers claims made about the disciplines of philosophy, biology, paleontology, geology, astronomy, physics and mathematics, history, linguistics, and folklore The work addresses the claims of Biblical creationism, intelligent design creationism, and even some creationism based on other religions. An introduction covers how to address creationists in different venues, how to deal with novel claims, and why accurate science is important. The volume is organized thematically, with extensive cross-referencing, so that someone presented with an unfamiliar claim can quickly find the argument, understand its flaws, provide a rebuttal, and see where to go for more information.
