Green Turtle Soup: And Other Favorite Recipes of a Great Cook

Green Turtle Soup: And Other Favorite Recipes of a Great Cook

To celebrate their mother's birthday, the Thompson family decided to compile the cookbook they always thought that she should have written. They remembered all their favorite meals, though not necessarily all the details. Their mother was in Florida and it wouldn't be a surprise if they asked for the recipes. So, they worked from their own recipes (not surprisingly many were making them for their own families) and upon consultation came to a rough estimate of each. The title came from a family legend. In the ancient past, the family had acquired a can of turtle meat. Many a time they consulted the recipe on the can for soup. Many a time they started the soup. Many a time when it came time to add the key ingredient, they thought it was very fine soup already. Too good in fact to risk diminishing.

The Thomas Edison Book of Easy and Incredible Experiments
An idea-packed catalog of projects, activities, and science fun sure to inspire future "Edisons" . The Thomas Edison Book of Easy and Incredible Experiments The Thomas Alva Edison Foundation Thomas Edison patented 1,093 inventions -- and more chemistry experiments than any other scientist ever! This book reflects the fascination that he found in experimentation and presents the best, most popular experiments and projects sponsored by the prestigious Edison Foundation. Here, in one convenient volume, you will find a range of activities from the very simple (for primary or middle grades or individual young scientists at home) to the intriguingly complex (for older students, groups, or an entire class). These experiments require no science background. They utilize inexpensive, easy-to-obtain materials. Most of all, the projects are fun to build, safe and useful, and each provides a good demonstration of important scientific principles in real-life action! Most youngsters and teens can work on the experiments with little supervision, and there are ample ideas for science fairs and "extra credit" projects. Over 100 illustrations are included, plus photos of the legendary inventor himself. Experiments in this book encompass magnetism, electricity, electrochemistry, chemistry, physics, energy, and environmental studies -- topics for varied interests in grades 4 through 11. Throughout, emphasis is on the essence of scientific "tinkering," experimenting for the pure fun of it . activities that lead to satisfying hobbies, new ideas, and learning. Edison himself would surely enjoy this book -- so imagine that you are visiting his laboratory, and let this be your introduction to a world of discovery. .
The Arts of Deception

The Arts of Deception

Ingenious automatons which appeared to think on their own. Dubious mermaids and wild men who resisted classification. Elegant sleight-of-hand artists who routinely exposed the secrets of their trade. These were some of the playful forms of fraud which astonished, titillated, and even outraged nineteenth-century America's new middle class, producing some of the most remarkable urban spectacles of the century. In The Arts of Deception, James W. Cook explores this distinctly modern mode of trickery designed to puzzle the eye and challenge the brain. Championed by the "Prince of Humbug," P. T. Barnum, these cultural puzzles confused the line between reality and illusion. Upsetting the normally strict boundaries of value, race, class, and truth, the spectacles offer a revealing look at the tastes, concerns, and prejudices of America's very first mass audiences. We are brought into the exhibition halls, theaters, galleries, and museums where imposture flourished, and into the minds of the curiosity-seekers who eagerly debated the wonders before their eyes. Cook creates an original portrait of a culture in which ambiguous objects, images, and acts on display helped define a new value system for the expanding middle class, as it confronted a complex and confusing world.

The keen-eyed, cool-headed, and fearless men (Kit Carson, Jim Bridger, Buffalo Bill Cody, Big Foot Wallace, and Captain Jim Cook, among others) who were pivotal personalities for more than half a century in the almost ceaseless task of clearing the way for and guarding the lives and properties of explorers, emigrants, and settlers in the West, are an extinct type of pioneer, Accounts of the heroic deeds of this handful of men, however, remain today as indelible records that dramatize the melting away of this country's vast frontiers.
