The purpose of the book is to give visitors to the medieval castles of Wales a concise but informative description of the main publicly accessible sites in a convenient format. An introductory chapter outlines the development of castle architecture in Britain, drawing on Welsh examples, with a number of 'box features' that elaborate more fully on particular aspects, such as gatehouses, or key personalities such as Llywelyn Fawr. Five chapters form a regionally based gazetteer of the castles described. Each entry is prefaced with a key to arrangements at each castle, such as whether there is an entry charge. The know history of any given site is then summarized, and this is then followed by the core of each entry, namely the description of the visible remains, to enable visitors to navigate their way around. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was writing at a time of Evangelical unease. In a society ravaged by Asiatic cholera, numbed by levels of infant mortality, and fearful of revolution and the toxicity of industry (to name but a few of the many challenges), the 'gospel' proclaiming eternal damnation for unbelievers was hardly good news; rather, Christianity was increasingly viewed as the source of bad news and a tool of state oppression. MacDonald agreed: in his view, the church had become a vampire, sucking the blood of her children instead of o¬ffering them Eucharistic life. In contrast, like Christ, MacDonald offered a child. Although at first sight a familiar Romantic incarnation, in MacDonald's theology 'the child' becomes an unlikely icon challenging the vampire's kingdom and confronting the foundations of much of Western theology. John R. de Jong's meticulously researched study of MacDonald's work - especially his 'realist' and fantasy novels - in its Victorian context is of more than historical interest. This book examines the importance of the Scottish Covenanters during one of the most turbulent and complex periods of early modern British History. Thematic issues are examined within a chronological framework and consideration is given to the importance of the Covenanters in a wider British and European context. The reasons for the emergence of the Covenanting movement against the rule of Charles I in Scotland by 1637 are examined, as is the nature of the Covenanting government and administration of Scotland throughout the 1640s prior to the conquest of Scotland by Oliver Cromwell in 1650-1. The Covenanters were at the forefront of a wider British and Irish conflict involving Charles I and the kingdoms of Scotland and Ireland. The role of the Covenanters in this wider British and Irish conflict of the 1640s is discussed and there is a specific focus on Scotland and Ulster. The continental European dimension is considered in terms of the Thirty Years War (1618-48) and Covenanting involvement in that conflict. The impact of the Covenanters on Scottish society is also examined in terms of the drive for a godly society and witch-hunting. Other social issues covered include war widows, victims of warfare and refugees from Ireland on Scottish soil. Contemporary documents included in the book highlight these issues. Collectively the documents cover a range of social, political, military, economic and religious issues. This will be an important book for undergraduates taking university courses in early modern Scottish and British History covering the conflicts of the three kingdoms of the Stuart monarchy in the 1640s.

the continued search for rapid, efficient and cost-effective means of analytical measurement has introduced supercritical fluids into the field of analytical chemistry. Two areas are common: supercritical fluid chromatography and supercritical fluid extraction. Both seek to exploit the unique properties of a gas at temperatures and pressures above the critical point. The most common supercritical fluid is carbon dioxide employed because of its low critical temperature (310C), inertness, purity, non-toxicity and cheapness. Alternative supercritical fluids are also used and often in conjunction with modifiers. The combined gas-like mass transfer and liquid-like solvating characteristics have been used for improved chromatographic separation and faster sample preparation. Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) is complementary to gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) providing higher efficiency than HPLC, together, with the ability to analyse thermally labile and high molecular weight analytes. Both packed and open tubular columns can be employed, providing the capability to analyse a wide range of sample types. In addition, flame ionization detection can be used thus providing "universal" detection. The separation of complex mixtures by chromatography provides an effective means of identifying individual components. However, as with most techniques, it is the sample preparation which is both time and labour intensive. Traditionally, Soxhlet extraction has been employed but this has several disadvantages when extracting compounds of low and medium polarity using liquid solvents. Extractions are time consuming,. relatively unselective and use large amounts of hazardous solvents, so that further cleanup is usually necessary. Furthermore, after extraction and cleanup steps, the solution must usually be concentrated by evaporation prior to introduction into a chromatograph. Supercritical fluid extraction offers an elegant alternative to the currently applied extraction procedures. The ability of supercritical fluids to deposit extractants by simple depressurisation and/or cryogenic focusing means that solvent concentration can be done quickly and without heat or vacuum. These latter point are particularly important when one is seeking preservation of sensitive analytes. This text therefore seems appropriate at this stage to review the current situation regarding supercritical fluids in analytical chemistry and, to consider the future possibilities to which they may be applied.
