Covering the schooling system, the nature of knowledge and methods of teaching, this book analyses the viewpoints of both teachers and pupils. Key questions are answered, including:What is education and what is it for? Where does education take place? How do we learn?Who are the students? What is being taught in schools and universities and why? What is the state of education across the world? With further reading throughout, Education: The Basics is essential for all those embarking on undergraduate courses in Education and Education Studies, and for those with an involvement in teaching at all levels.
How Political Parties Respond focuses specifically on the question of interest aggregation. Do parties today perform that function? If so, how? If not, in what different ways do they seek to show themselves responsive to the electorate? This fascinating book studies these questions with reference to Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Canada. A chapter on Russia demonstrates how newly powerful private interest groups and modern techniques of persuasion can work together to prevent effective party response to popular interests in systems where the authoritarian tradition remains strong.
What does it mean to read from elsewhere? Women Writers in Postsocialist China introduces readers to a range and variety of contemporary Chinese women’s writing, which has seen phenomenal growth in recent years. The book addresses the different ways women’s issues are understood in China and the West, attending to the processes of translation, adaptation, and the grafting of new ideas with existing Chinese understandings of gender, feminism, subjectivity, consumerism and (post) modernism. By focusing on women’s autobiographical, biographical, fictional and historical writing, the book engages in a transcultural flow of ideas between western and indigenous Chinese feminisms. Taking account of the accretions of social, cultural, geographic, literary, economic, and political movements and trends, cultural formations and ways of thinking, it asks how the texts and the concepts they negotiate might be understood in the social and cultural spaces within China and how they might be interpreted differently elsewhere in the global locations in which they circulate. The book argues that women-centred writing in China has a direct bearing on global feminist theory and practice. This critical study of selected genres and writers highlights the shifts in feminist perspectives within contemporary local and global cultural landscapes.
Sandplay in Three Voices provides a unique and engaging understanding of sandplay - a growing modality of psychotherapy. Emerging out of informal conversations among three senior therapists, it examines the essential aspects of sandplay therapy as well as the depth and breadth of the human psyche. The book is organized into eight sections covering eight of the most important topics in sandplay - Therapist, Silence, Child, Mother, Self, Shadow, Chaos, and Numinous. Each section begins with a trialogue discussing theory, history and practice of sandplay in that area. The trialogues allow the reader to witness three senior therapists addressing and attempting to understand the many layers of each topic, and reflect their agreements and disagreements as they reveal their individual thoughts on, and personal experiences of, the themes they discuss. Each trialogue is followed by a set of solo presentations in which each author focuses on her contribution, and on the role of each topic in sandplay.Illustrated by original clinical examples, this unique approach addresses issues of concern to analysts and other psychotherapists. Its basic orientation makes it of particular value in the study, practice and teaching of sandplay therapy.

Women complain there are no good men left, that men are immature, unreliable, and adrift. No wonder. Masculine role models have become increasingly juvenile and inarticulate: think of stars like Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell, or the dudes of the popular Judd Apatow movies. There are no rules for dating and mating. Guys are unsure how to treat a woman. Most importantly, dating in the pre-adult years is no longer a means to an end, marriage,as it was in the past. Many young men today suspect they are no longer essential to family life, and without the old scripts to follow, they find themselves stuck between adolescence and real" adulthood. In Manning Up , Kay Hymowitz sets these problems in a socioeconomic context: today's knowledge economy is female friendly, and many of the highest profile areas of that economy, communications, design, the arts, and health care, are dominated by women. Men are increasingly left on the outskirts of this new, service economy, and take much longer to find a financial foothold. With no biological clock telling them it's time to grow up, without the financial resources to settle down, and with the accepted age of marriage rising into the late 30s or even 40s, men are holding onto adolescence at the very time that women are achieving professional success and looking to find a mate to share it with. A provocative account of the modern sexual economy, Hymowitz deftly charts a gender mismatch that threatens the future of the American family and makes no one happy in the long run.

Can, so-called, 'superfoods' really help you be healthier and feel better? Good question. Author, Donna Davidson, says, 'I'm often asked things like, "Can learning how to make chocolate recipes and homemade chocolates from a costlier raw, organic version of chocolate really be so much better for you?" Or, "Can Cacao and other so-called 'superfoods' seriously contribute to a low cholesterol diet or help someone trying to achieve weight loss, or battle debilitating health problems?"Actually, that's exactly what happened for me. Today, 5 years on from my first tentative superfoods 'experiments', I'm healthier and feeling better than I had felt for years, in my 'pre-superfoods' days. And I'm not alone.'Here are just 3 stories from ordinary people trying out superfoods for themselves: Annemarie: Nick, my husband, has been using the green smoothie powder and is really noticing the benefits - he is a landscaper so needs the energy - plus he has sinus problems and this has really helped with that as well. Brilliant.Sigrid: Still going strong with the smoothies and have one most days. Really like them and I think they are helping me cope with the stresses of my current life - very sick husband, work, coping with ten staff, visitors and the rest of the daily grind.Michele M: I am having a smoothie every morning and my Green Smoothie Shot and the great thing is, I have been able to stop taking the Laxsol tablets that I have had to take for years. I decided to stop taking them straight away because they aren't life threatening (just uncomfortable if this didn't work) to see if the Chia seeds and Green Smoothie Shot made any difference immediately. I'm pleased to say it has and I'm (as) 'regular as clock-work' without medication... wahoo (But) Now for the extra good news, I have lost 2kgs in just under 2 weeks of using the Chia Seeds, Cacao Powder and Green Smoothie Shot - so the products are obviously cleansing my body well. I'm using all natural 100% pure coconut water in my smoothies and a frozen banana which is awesome. Thank you so much for your recommendations and supplying such great products.'These stories are typical of the feedback we get from people open enough to give superfoods a try. Over the past 5 years, I discovered a talent for persuading superfood sceptics to give them a try, by simply relating my own story. Almost all report experiencing the same increased sense of well-being and improved mental acuity that I'd found; while others also gained relief from persistent and debilitating health issues - which I similarly achieved after adding superfoods into my regular diet (not changing anything else in my diet at the time) by the simple means of drinking a delicious green smoothie every morning.'Donna and Kay both agreed that Cacao would be the perfect superfood for book #1 - because everyone loves chocolate right? Cacao is Nature's healthy and delicious superfood chocolate you can enjoy even on a weight loss or low cholesterol diet And healthy, or certainly healthier, ways to enjoy chocolate have got to be a great addition to any chocolate lover's recipe book collection.
