Examining the ideas, philosophies and strategies that inform and enable a young woman’s self-determination for a new century, this is a detailed, insightful study of Greta Gerwig’s much-loved, influential and critically acclaimed film.Drawing on Transcendentalism, French feminist thought, Californian art and the work of iconic American essayist Joan Didion, Rob Stone approaches Lady Bird as a film about young women’s self-determination in relation to other women and waves of feminist history. Structured to emulate the evolving conscience and emerging consciousness of the film’s eponymous protagonist, this new volume in the Cinema and Youth Cultures series provides an incisive portrait of a particular American youth subculture struggling to assert its identity between the shock of 9/11 in 2001 and the global financial crisis of 2008. It also sensitively examines tensions between Gerwig and Lady Bird, and between Lady Bird being set in 2002 and made in 2017. Written by an expert on American independent cinema and the dynamics of World Cinema, this volume explores strategies of self-determination that ignite in the friction between mothers and daughters and culminate in considerations of how the film’s form and aesthetics lead to reflections on its philosophy and politics.Situating Lady Bird in the genre of youth movies and feminist film practice and culture, this book is ideal for students and researchers looking at wider dialogues and discourses about feminism, philosophy, gender, genre and American independent filmmaking.

First published in 1988, Lady Chatterley explores the events and experiences which surrounded D. H. Lawrence’s writing of his infamous last novel, Lady Chatterley’s Lover. The account begins with Lawrence’s return to Europe in September 1925 and ends with the publication in June 1928 of the final draft of a novel which exists in three related yet dissimilar versions. Derek Britton adds a great deal of new material to the established facts and theories concerning Lawrence’s life and work during this period. In the chapters covering Lawrence’s return to the Midlands in September 1926 when the collapse of the national miners’ strike in that area was imminent, a detailed reconstruction of Lawrence’s journeys and experiences reveals the extent to which the themes of the novel, the social and physical aspects of the landscape and Lawrence’s initial impulse to write depended crucially on the author’s last visit to his native region. This book will appeal both to those with special interests in Lawrence and the modern novel, and to the general reader.

Lady Charlotte Bury

Lady Charlotte Bury

This is the first biography of Lady Charlotte Bury (1775–1861), a renowned novelist and celebrated beauty who listed Sir Walter Scott and Matthew ‘Monk’ Lewis among her admirers. Born the youngest daughter of John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll, and his wife Elizabeth, née Gunning, she married twice for love, gave birth to eleven children, travelled extensively in France, Switzerland and Italy, served as lady-in-waiting to Caroline of Brunswick, Princess of Wales, and published collections of poetry and twenty ‘silver-fork’ novels. As a former member of the royal court, Bury gained notoriety as the suspected author of the anonymous and highly scandalous Diary Illustrative of the Times of George IV (1838), which has overshadowed her legacy as a female writer. Her fictional characters explore the ways in which perceptions of women in literature and society were undergoing rapid change, a process of which she herself—like her contemporary, Jane Austen—was a catalyst. By the time of her death, aged 86, Bury was widely considered one of the foremost female novelists of her generation, yet by the turn of the century her work had been largely forgotten. 'Forget Not', a translation of Ne Obliviscaris, was the apt motto of the House of Argyll, of which Lady Charlotte Bury was a daughter.
