My Black Stars

My Black Stars

Lilian Thuram

People, young and old, need stars to guide them. They need models to construct their own identity, to build their self-esteem, to change the way they see the world and to overcome their own and others’ prejudice.During my childhood, many stars were pointed out to me. I admired them, dreamt about them: Socrates, Baudelaire, Einstein, Marie Curie, General de Gaulle, Mother Teresa… But nobody ever spoke to me about black stars. The world of my education was white, from the colour of the school walls to the pages of my textbooks. I knew nothing about my own ancestors. Slavery was the only black subject ever mentioned. In this vision, the history of Black people could only ever be a vale of tears and strife. Can you tell me the name of a black scientist?A black explorer?A black philosopher?A black pharaoh? If you don’t know the answer to these questions, then, whatever the colour of your skin, this book is for you. Because the best way to fight racism and intolerance is to educate ourselves and to broaden our imaginations. The portraits of the men and women in this book are a product of my own reading and my interviews with scholars. Starting with Lucy and ending with Barack Obama, and along the way meeting Aesop, Dona Béatrice, Pushkin, Anne Zingha, Aimé Césaire, Martin Luther King and many others. These stars have allowed me to reject the idea that I am a victim, to renew my faith in mankind and, above all, to believe in myself. - Lilian ThuramThis translation of Lilian Thuram’s bestselling 2010 volume, Mes Etoiles Noires, by Laurent Dubois (University of Virginia), finally brings his anti-racism work to the attention of an English-language audience (the book has already been translated into several European languages). At a time when the Black Lives Matter movement has reminded us of the need to tell more complex stories about our shared past, this volume constitutes a timely intervention by a prominent black sporting figure.

A fight. An ultimatum. And a compromising kiss. Are these the three ingredients needed to turn enemies to lovers? Probably not.Especially not when these two people are Charlie Owen and James Li. Sworn enemies from their medical school days, the now competitive trauma surgeons have a lot more hanging on the line if they don't call a truce, including their budding careers. But once they start playing on the same team, perhaps these two unseemly enemies have a little more in common than just saving lives.
Curating Art Now

Curating Art Now

Curating Art Now is a timely reflection on the practice of curating and the role of the art curator during a period of rapid change. Curating has a pivotal position in the art world: it is embedded in the identity and expertise of the museum and plays an ever-increasing role in the commercial art sector too. Current curatorial practice encompasses a wide range of activities, from the care of collections in museums to the presentation of large-scale contemporary biennials, and from collaboration with artists to presentations of work on digital platforms. Curating has grown substantially in the last decades, and in the early 2020s is undergoing a significant period of transition as it grapples with some fundamental questions. How diverse and inclusive is curating as a profession, and how does that inform the art and artists who come to prominence? How possible is it to conduct exploratory and inclusive curatorial work in the challenging economic climate of the early 2020s? What is the extent of a curator’s autonomy within the various institutions and structures in which they work, and what power dynamics are at work between artists and curators? Finally, how might digital art and exhibition-making give way to hybrid forms of practice, and even challenge the face of traditional curating? Lilian Cameron’s lively review addresses all of these issues, and considers the future landscape of curating in an uncertain world.

From the outbreak of the Second World War to the evacuation of Dunkirk, GOODBYE SWEETHEART follows the fortunes of the people who live in a working-class street in Portsmouth.Like any street, April Grove in Portsmouth has its good and bad neighbours, its gossip, scandal and romance. But the outbreak of war in 1939 changes everything - especially for the children. Uprooted from their familiar urban existence they are evacuated (some happily, some not) to the country. Then there are the teenagers, whose first loves are accelerated and intensified by the threat of separation; and men and women, too old to fight, who hold the life of the street together. Based on the author's own childhood memories of growing up near Portsmouth, this is a novel which shows us what England was really like then - a story told with such nostalgia and charm that you leave the world it describes longing for the chance to return.
Studies of Renaissance Miniaturists in Venice. Vol 1
Lilian Armstrong is Professor of Art at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, and a specialist on Venetian Renaissance book illumination. She is the author of The Paintings and Drawings of Marco Zoppo and Renaissance Miniature Painters and Classical Imagery: The Master of the Putti and His Venetian Workshop, and she was a major contributor to the exhibition catalogue The Painted Page: Italian Renaissance Book Illumination 1450-1550 (ed. by Jonathan Alexander). Her publications have focussed particularly on the transition from illuminated manuscripts to the hand-illuminated early printed book in Venice. The present volume collects Professor Armstrong's papers on miniaturists active in Venice and Northern Italy in the 15th and early 16th centuries, and on the impact of the new invention of printing on these artists and their patrons. Included are papers on Marco Zoppo, primarily a monumental"painter, who nevertheless also painted in manuscripts and incunables. The studies variously identify miniaturists and designers of woodcuts through stylistic groupings, trace iconographic traditions for Pliny's Natural History and Petrarch's De viris illustribus, demonstrate the importance of heraldry for studying patronage of Venetian printed books, and explore the distribution of Venetian incunables throughout Europe based on analysis of their decoration.

Aims to elevate learner anxiety from a pastoral concern to a pedagogical reality, enabling teachers in primary and secondary school settings to build a new perspective on and support anxious learners who may display challenging behaviours. This book explores the relationship between anxiety and common classroom problems such as unhelpful behaviour, work avoidance and learning loss. It promotes the philosophy that it is a teacher's role to 'support not fix' learners with anxiety and other mental health concerns by adopting effective pedagogical strategies. Despite not being recognised as a learning difficulty, anxiety can be something that makes learning very difficultfor pupils. Learners with anxiety have the right to be seen, feel safe at school and have their needs supported. This book provides teachers with a toolkit to cultivate a professional mindset that recognises behaviour as communication and that anxious pupils have the capacity to learn. It also delves into the neuroscience of anxiety, with text backed up by pertinent theory..Written by a practicing classroom teacher, this book is packed with illustrations, quotations and humour as well as opportunities for critical reflection and tried and tested strategies, advice and reassurance.

One date with the Prince.A favor. What could possibly go wrong?A whole lot can go wrong, apparently. For one, I'm not exactly in the royal family's good graces. Thanks for dinner, guys. Nice to see you all after being banished from the Kingdom as a baby Prince Damon doesn't seem to mind the death glares coming from across the table. The way he looks at me makes my thighs clench. When his hand brushes mine, my whole body burns. Why am I staring at his lips right now? Why is my body begging me to kiss him?Anyway, yadda yadda yadda...aaand I'm pregnant.I'm the wrong girl in the wrong kingdom with the wrong prince. But a small voice in my head-or my heart-whispers that Prince Damon might feel the same way I do.Maybe this could work.Maybe we have a chance.Maybe this baby will have a family, and we'll get our happily ever after.Family feuds run deep, though, and Damon has demons of his own. When I tell him about the baby, will he choose me-or turn his back on the both of us and leave me out in the cold?
