"Wish Dad would come," she said aloud, puckering her brow over a knot in the silk. "He's late-and it is jolly dull without him." The knot came free, and the needles raced as though making up for lost time. Two dogs lay on the grass: a big sleepy collie that only moved occasionally to snap at a worrying fly; and an Irish terrier, plainly showing by his restlessness that he despised a lazy life, and longed for action. He caught his mistress's eye at last, and jumped up with a little whine. "If YOU had the heel of a sock to turn, Puck," said Norah, "you'd be more steady. Lie down, old man.

Matters of Consequence: Critical Eschatological Issues Impacting Endtime Preparation is the authors dissertation for a doctor of philosophy in eschatology from the Luder-Wycliffe Theological Seminary, Endicott, New York. Dr. Rick Young applies the proven methods of emergency preplanning and crisis management to better prepare Christians for the prophetic, end-time events foretold in the Bible. By means of developing the worst case scenario concept, he challenges the reader to think through countermeasures for that vital preparation. In this way, eschatology actually becomes practical

This narrative shows how the contours of moral and political philosophy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were shaped by Kant's two distinct philosophical responses to the results of modern science. This history of early modern Western philosophy takes its inspiration from Kant's claim that the battle between the metaphysics of matter and that of spirit is the principal axis around which modern philosophy up to his time, in all its aspects, has revolved. The empiricist-materialist trend that dominates in England is first examined in the progressively unfolding works of Hobbes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, and Adam Smith. A contrasting and competing dialectic develops in the rationalist/spiritualist trend in the continental philosophy of Descartes, Leibniz, and Rousseau. Framing this history is the background context of the philosophy and science of Aristotle and the challenges to the traditional paradigm presented by the revolutionary sciences of Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton. James Lawler is Professor of Philosophy at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Nautilus Award Gold Medal Winner, Ecology & Environment In Matter and Desire, internationally renowned biologist and philosopher Andreas Weber rewrites ecology as a tender practice of forging relationships, of yearning for connections, and of expressing these desires through our bodies. Being alive is an erotic process—constantly transforming the self through contact with others, desiring ever more life. In clever and surprising ways, Weber recognizes that love—the impulse to establish connections, to intermingle, to weave our existence poetically together with that of other beings—is a foundational principle of reality. The fact that we disregard this principle lies at the core of a global crisis of meaning that plays out in the avalanche of species loss and in our belief that the world is a dead mechanism controlled through economic efficiency. Although rooted in scientific observation, Matter and Desire becomes a tender philosophy for the Anthropocene, a “poetic materialism,” that closes the gap between mind and matter. Ultimately, Weber discovers, in order to save life on Earth—and our own meaningful existence as human beings—we must learn to love.
