The Art of Proof

The Art of Proof

Matthias Beck; Ross Geoghegan

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
2010
sidottu
The Art of Proof is designed for a one-semester or two-quarter course. A typical student will have studied calculus (perhaps also linear algebra) with reasonable success. With an artful mixture of chatty style and interesting examples, the student's previous intuitive knowledge is placed on solid intellectual ground. The topics covered include: integers, induction, algorithms, real numbers, rational numbers, modular arithmetic, limits, and uncountable sets. Methods, such as axiom, theorem and proof, are taught while discussing the mathematics rather than in abstract isolation. Some of the proofs are presented in detail, while others (some with hints) may be assigned to the student or presented by the instructor. The authors recommend that the two parts of the book -- Discrete and Continuous -- be given equal attention. The book ends with short essays on further topics suitable for seminar-style presentation by small teams of students, either in class or in a mathematics club setting. These include: continuity, cryptography, groups, complex numbers, ordinal number, and generating functions.
Contextual Development Economics

Contextual Development Economics

Matthias P. Altmann

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
2010
sidottu
Poverty still persists in today’s low-income countries despite decades of international aid, and extensive research on the determinants of growth and development. The book argues that meeting this challenge requires a holistic understanding of the context-specific factors that influence economic behavior and structures in poor countries. Contextual Development Economics approaches this task by offering a methodology that allows analysing the dynamic interrelations between economic, cultural and historical determinants of economic life in low-income countries. The book starts with an empirical inquiry into the economic characteristics of low-income countries that create the context by which the specific forms of organising economic activity in these countries are determined. It then looks at how different generations of development economists sought to explain economic realities in low-income countries from the 1940s through today. The book finally synthesises the results from this empirical and methodological analysis with insights from an inquiry into contributions of the German Historical School, from which it borrows the concept of the economic style as a methodological alternative to the universal and hence often irrelevant models of mainstream development economics. This book offers a promising perspective for the future of development economics that will be of interest to researchers and development practitioners alike. It will also be relevant for academics and students with an interest in applications of the method and concepts of the Historical School to contemporary problems.
Adaptive Multimodal Interactive Systems

Adaptive Multimodal Interactive Systems

Matthias Bezold; Wolfgang Minker

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

Adaptive Multimodal Interactive Systems introduces a general framework for adapting multimodal interactive systems and comprises a detailed discussion of each of the steps required for adaptation. This book also investigates how interactive systems may be improved in terms of usability and user friendliness while describing the exhaustive user tests employed to evaluate the presented approaches. After introducing general theory, a generic approach for user modeling in interactive systems is presented, ranging from an observation of basic events to a description of higher-level user behavior. Adaptations are presented as a set of patterns similar to those known from software or usability engineering. These patterns describe recurring problems and present proven solutions. The authors include a discussion on when and how to employ patterns and provide guidance to the system designer who wants to add adaptivity to interactive systems. In addition to these patterns, the book introduces an adaptation framework, which exhibits an abstraction layer using Semantic Web technology.Adaptations are implemented on top of this abstraction layer by creating a semantic representation of the adaptation patterns. The patterns cover both graphical interfaces as well as speech-based and multimodal interactive systems.

Fundamental Techniques in Pulmonary and Oesophageal Surgery

Fundamental Techniques in Pulmonary and Oesophageal Surgery

Matthias Paneth; Peter Goldstraw; Barbara E. Hyams

Springer London Ltd
2012

This book sets out to illustrate the key steps in some of the commoner procedures in pulmonary and oesophageal surgery. Each chapter deals with one operation. It was always our intention that the emphasis should be on detailed illustrations of the various stages of each operation. The text is of secondary importance, serving to provide continuity and to guide the reader through the illustrations. The techniques outlined are those which have evolved in our practice over the years and are therefore the result of varied influences and personal experience. Where an individual surgeon's name is attached to an operative technique we make no claim to describe the procedure exactly as that surgeon would have performed it, and it would perhaps have been more accurate to describe the technique as being "in the style of ...... ". We would wish to apologise in advance to any surgeon who feels that we have not accurately depicted his technique or have deviated from it in any important respect.
Surgical Scene Generation for Virtual Reality-Based Training in Medicine
One of the most important elements needed for effective training in Virtual Reality (VR) is the generation of variable scenarios. Without this, trainees quickly become familiar with a scene and the natural variations encountered in real-life situations cannot be reproduced. Generating such models in VR-based applications is difficult, but with the increase in computational power (allowing for larger and more finely-detailed virtual environments) there is an increasing demand for improved methods for model acquisition, enhancement, optimization and adaptation. The field of medicine lends itself very well to VR-based training particularly in the area of surgery. In this book Matthias Harders examines the main components needed when defining effective scenarios: • scene geometry • organ appearance • biomechanical parameters providing an extensive overview of related work and introducing specific solutions in detail. With plenty of examples to show the outcome and performance of the methods presented in the book, this will be an essential resource for all those involved in generating training scenarios in medical education, as well as in VR-based training in general.

End-to-End Arguments in the Internet: Principles, Practices, and Theory

End-to-End Arguments in the Internet: Principles, Practices, and Theory

The end-to-end arguments have been at the heart of an increasingly political debate about the proper place of communications functions in a physically and administratively distributed network such as the Internet. In particular, what is the right balance between application end points on the one hand, and network intermediaries on the other? This thesis goes beyond the cursory arguments found in much of today's discussions on Internet governance and regulation. It unveils the historical background to the end-to-end principle and develops them with a rigour that has thus far been absent from the discourse on Internet design principles. Our thorough and timely elaboration of one of the core technical principles that came to form today's Internet is relevant to most anyone with a stake in the future Internet evolution. If we are to maintain the goodness of the Internet, it is vital that we first understand its principles. Only then can we hope to arrive at useful policy implications.

Social Networks and Travel Behaviour

Social Networks and Travel Behaviour

Matthias Kowald; Kay W. Axhausen

Routledge
2015
sidottu
In aiming to understand and model peoples’ out-of-home movements, the academic field of transport planning is confronted with two major challenges. Firstly, leisure travel is increasing in importance and is more complex and variable than work-related travel, being less rigid in temporal and spatial patterns and more influenced by external factors such as social contacts or weather conditions. Secondly, traditional aggregated transport models do not include any information on peoples’ social interactions or their personal social networks. In contrast, the recent development and availability of disaggregated models allows more detailed modelling of elements such as individual characteristics, motivations, constraints and travel costs, as well as a consideration of influences from an actor’s social environment. People travel not only within an infrastructure but also within a social structure. These two main factors have driven transport planners to focus on peoples’ interaction and their social network. In recent years there have been a remarkable number of data collection efforts in the field, surveying information on the link between travel behaviour and social motivation. Providing an overview of selected exemplary studies, this volume addresses the overlap between transport planning and methods of social network analysis; applied methods of social network analysis and related empirical results; and current challenges and new research questions in this field.

The enthralling story of the German 73rd Fusilier Regiment, the regiment of Ernst Jünger, author of the renowned Storm of Steel, as it fought through the major campaigns of World War I’s Western Front. Combining traditional military history with a trench-level soldier’s view of the Great War, Dr Matthias Strohn tracks the experiences of an elite German regiment throughout the conflict, following the men who fought and died in the service of what would ultimately prove to be a futile cause. The German 73rd Fusilier Regiment spent the whole of World War I on the Western Front and was one of the Imperial German Army’s most elite units. Starting with the occupation of Liège, it took part in nearly every major campaign in the West, including the Champagne offensives, the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele and the Operation Michael offensives. Using the personal accounts of the soldiers themselves, including Ernst Jünger, author of Storm of Steel, this engrossing story of a regiment at war presents the horror of trench warfare on a human scale, through the eyes of ordinary men-at-arms, as they fought for honour and survival in military history’s most brutal theatre of combat.

In Social Life, the authors highlight, explain, and scrutinize socio-theoretical analyses of contemporary social relations and conditions - put forward by eight modern social theorists - and analyse how these have informed sociological inquiries into people’s lives in today’s social world. The book discusses the works of the following social theorists: Anthony Giddens Pierre Bourdieu Bruno Latour Donna Haraway Zygmunt Bauman Jean-Francois Lyotard Michel Foucault Jean Baudrillard In each chapter, the authors identify the key components of each theorist’s conception of society and apply the theories outlined to specific, modern phenomena. This connection with modern-day phenomena allows for a critical interrogation of issues in contemporary society, including: Inequality and Capital, Power, Fear and Terrorism, Immune System Discourse, Suffering, and Climate Change. Essential reading for all sociology students studying social theory and the works of modern social theorists.
