This book provides comprehensive design guidance on urban layout to ensure good access to solar gain, daylighting and passive cooling. It aims to enable designers to produce comfortable, energy-efficient buildings surrounded by pleasant outdoor spaces, within an urban context that minimizes energy consumption and the effects of pollution. The book is the principal output of a project jointly funded by the European Commission JOULE programme and national funding agencies including the UK Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. The European project is coordinated by BRE and includes the University of Athens, LEMA (University of Liege) and AICIA (University of Seville). This book is divided into six main chapters. Chapter 1 sets the scene, outlining the importance of each of the main environmental factors affecting site layout. Chapters 2-6 then cover the urban design process, from the selection of a site for a new development down to the design and landscaping of individual buildings and the spaces around them.

The latter part of the 3rd millennium BC witnessed severe dislocations in the social, economic and political structures of the lands at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea - the Levant. In the south, in what is now Israel, the Palestinian Territories and Jordan, hitherto thriving urban centres disappeared, to be replaced for several centuries by smaller agricultural and pastoral settlements, with an apparently increasingly large semi-nomadic or nomadic element in the population. In the north - modern Syria - life in many of the earlier towns was also disrupted, but there does not seem to have been such a major break in urban traditions, and the new towns which soon replaced the old were to rise to unprecedented heights of prosperity and cultural achievement well before the end of the millennium. The causes of these different but related historical developments - including possible environmental changes, military activity, and ethnic movements - have long enthralled archaeologists and ancient historians. This volume contains the papers given at a conference held in 2004 at the British Museum, presenting both new evidence and new theories bearing on this transitional period. Edited by Peter J. Parr, it contains contributions by Daniele Morandi Bonacossi, Rupert Chapman III, Karen Covello-Paran, Claude Doumet-Serha, Ram Gophna, Moti Haiman, Moshe Kochavi, Jessie C. Long Jr., Minna Lonnqvist, Peter J. Parr, Francis Pinnock, Kay Prag, Suzanne Richard, R.Thomas Schaub, and Jonathan N.Tubb.

Selling their London home and buying a decaying rural pile in the wilds of Dorset seems to Bill and Alison Cavendish the perfect way to swap the stresses and strains of the city for a peaceful new life in the countryside, with the added bonus of cash in the bank. Unfortunately the manor house which captures their interest in the picturesque village of Little Daunting has problems far older, deeper and nastier than rats and dry rot. The cellars conceal a terrible, shocking secret; one which dates all the way back to the witch hunts of the 17th century and to those who would steal living bodies in the quest for eternal life. As Bill and Alison soon discover, at least one of the villagers knows far more than he is admitting about the gruesome events that have been taking place in the ancient, walled-off catacombs which lie concealed under the neighbouring churchyard. When Bill and Alison and their new gypsy allies investigate, they find themselves lifting the lid on an unimagined horror...Catacombs of the Damned is a sexy, shocking horror story for adults from P J Cadavori.

We live in a world of "fake news", data breaches, election hacking, and cyberwarfare. We live in a world in which 280 characters can change everything. Our analog past has been replaced with digital realities. The world itself is being reprogrammed. This statement might seem like a quippy metaphor, but it actually reveals something much more concrete. The central claim of this book is that digital technologies are rewiring the way that society understands and thinks about global order as Cyberspace changes the content of international borders. Understanding these developments is critical to understanding the future of global society.

It's 1989 and a surf-loving Aussie teenager flukes a dream move to an English footballing giant. Problem is, it's never been his dream, and in the brutal big leagues he has a fight on his hands to ensure his laidback life doesn't turn into one giant nightmare. Before Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka and Tim Cahill became household names in English football, and once Craig Johnston retired, there was another Aussie name on every football fan's lips.Rippa - Joey Rippa. This 19-year-old high school drop-out wants to be on the waves or smoking pot and strumming his guitar in his small Western Australian beach town, instead of being on a football pitch. But the round-ball game is where his real talent lies and when he has the match of his life for the State team against a travelling West Ham United side in a glamour friendly, he's offered a pro contract with the English First Division side. With the bill's mounting in his father's bar, his beloved uncle facing homelessness, and his band needing a new recording, he reluctantly signs and heads over to the UK.But the dream move turns sour the moment he lands when he discovers that The Hammers' manager, Bobby Noll, has been sacked and with no one at the club having any idea who this blonde-stubbled Kim Wilde-lookalike is, he's farmed out to Middleby United, a struggling non-league provincial outfit. And in the most landlocked town in Britain, and with its howling wind, never-ending rain and permanent grey skies, he feels a million miles away from his beloved sand and sun lifestyle.Rippa is faced with isolation, loneliness, terrible cuisine and a dressing room and stadium of home fans who think of him, at best, as a novelty, and, at worst, a pathetic joke.Still mourning his beloved English-born football-loving mother (who vanished six years earlier), he finds an unlikely ally in the club's female physio and tries to buckle down and make it in the brutal sink or swim world of English football. And along the way, he makes his family and hometown back in Australia proud, reminds West Ham that he actually exists, and get struggling Middleby back to the big time.

It's January 1989. Neighbours rules the screens, Madchester bosses the airwaves, Lineker, Barnes, Gazza and Co are lording it on the football field, and there's a fresh wave of optimism breezing through the nation. Not everyone's happy though.Thomas Bamford, known disparagingly to all as Tam Bam, is an angry man. He may have pride in his hometown on the Isle of Guff - situated 30 miles off Cornwall - but he hates everyone on it. And the feeling's mutual as he's spent most of his 47 years gorging on pasties and Lucozade (he's a good twelve stone overweight) while cursing and whinging about his never-ending ailments. The only thing Tam lives for is Guff Rovers, his local fourth division football team. Though you'd be hard-pushed to call him a fan. Despite never missing a game, his brutal and unrepentant abuse from the sidelines makes him a menace to the struggling side and a nightmare to anyone sitting near him. And don't get him started on Cockney manager Gary Pullman and silver-spooned owner Gus Pinkle as he really, really hates them. Tam's miserable existence flips when he discovers his AWOL father struck it rich in the Middle East before kicking the bucket and has left him 5million. After trying to buy Manchester United (he claims to be a childhood penpal of Alex Ferguson), Tam settles for a majority share in Guff Rovers, installing himself as the gaffer.Tam, though, is dangerously out of his depth, sacking the entire team and buying in a hodgepodge of journeymen including a cleaner, a kebab van owner, a caber toss champion, and half of Swindon Town's reserves. The club quickly spirals out of control teetering towards their first relegation into non-league football in their 99-year history and financial ruin as Tam Bam learns there's more to football management - and life itself - than he ever realised.
